Maxi dress for petite

I need to know if there are any rules for maxi dress. I like the look but I m tiny 5'3 110 lb and 35 years old.
I don't want to look like I am trying too hard.
What do you ladies think?
Another question - are there any maxi dress with modest neck line? I don't mind sleeveless but showing cleavage - cant do that.
Any suggestions, advice?

It seems to me that most casual maxis are cut to show skin at the top since they cover up so much on the bottom half. Angie was suggesting to Mo the other day to try a high-low maxi, maybe because they are not so overwhelming and have less material? Sorry I don't have any specific recommendations for you.

I'm an inch and a half taller than you, and 8 years older. I'd look for adjustable straps if you can for starters. I'm 47 and I love maxi dresses. Since I'm only about 5'1, I don't find the right length very often. And I would never get around to hemming them. So I have a few, and I really enjoy wearing them.

I know there are less revealing necklines out there somewhere. I'm just not sure where to point you.

Ooh, another thought - eBay often lists actual length in inches on dresses. I rule out instantly anything over about 55" personally. Some are 60" and more!

While I'm not as militant about this as some, I don't love the maxi dress on anybody, unless it's a ball gown. It's especially tricky on petites. Being slim helps, though. And the column of the same colour can help make you look taller. I'd say you can do it, but proceed with caution, lest you look like you're walking around in your nightie. I'd opt for something sleeker (i.e. not too much fabric) and keep in mind that something too bare or bohemian might work better on a 20-something.
