Maxi dress for high waisted hourglasses? EDIT with pic of new arrival

Just throwing it out there, in case anyone has any leads. I trolled the 'net for several hours yesterday and came up with like 3 options. 2 of which sold out at Nordie's while I was browsing. Sheesh.
I'm looking for a casual, daytime, hot weather dress, not a gown for galas. He he he.

I'll keep an eye out for you. Since I was looking for dresses and finding almost NOTHING in between minis and maxis, surely there is a maxi out there for you. Of the ones you linked to, I like the one at Piperlime better. The other one looks quite sheer under that short liner.

And a momentary rant: Seriously, dress designers, WTF? I just want a cool, interesting slightly below-the-knee length dress. Should NOT be that hard.

EDIT: on a whim I ordered these from Asos just now. I figured I'd try ones with essentially no waist and see. One snug, one loose and skimming. Can't hurt to try. Besides, I like that they are more edgy and less frilly than most maxis out there

They came today and I think I LOVE the khaki one. Am I just cuckoo after trying so many and failing? Or is this dress finally 'me'? I know it's not traditionally flattering but it practically floats when I walk.
I haven't even gotten the second one out of the package yet lol. (please don't mind the lack of proper underpinnings and shower wet hair).

I love the movement. I think it can be casual or glam depending on the accessories. I think it's a keeper for the sheer versatility of it.

It might not be conventionally flattering, but I think it looks great on you! Great color for you too, and the back is lovely on your shoulders. I can see this with strappy sandals, gladiators, etc. I think it's fantastic.

It definitely has that floaty, ethereal look to it Mo - I think that's pretty much what you were after. I like the muted colors a lot and I don't think it's unflattering. Is it easy care enough?

Yay! You all like it too (tee hee!). I think the straps will stretch a tad with wear and the dress will lower an inch maybe, which will be fine.
Sara, I see what you see, kinda breezy, but with a bit of edge in the color and mixed media fabrics.

The chiffon pockets are real and could fit all my groceries, if the weight wouldn't drag them to the ground lol.

Tex, good question . . . let me see. Hunh, it says reshape while damp. Being 95% viscose and 5% spandex (chiffon touches are 100% poly) I'll likely dry on delicate. It could take a week to dry flat here in FL with that much material.

I like the lifted hem in the front so much more than a straight hem. At least we can see some of your leg, which to my eye is more flattering. I bet the effect is even better as you stride. I do find the strappinesss on top quite proportionally naked - and a little like a nightie. What do you think? Do you like the spaghetti straps?

thanks for your input Angie, I know maxi's aren't your thing I don't mind the straps at all, given the temps I'm going to be wearing it in. I think it helps counter the possible tent-y-ness of the dress, actually. And I do have bralettes that will fit perfectly under, if a traditional racerback bra won't.
I like that I feel totally at ease in it, and yet stylish too. Great combo.

I like it on you so much more than the model. The walking shot you can really get a feel for the movement. The color looks more cool toned too. Very nice!

I like it much better on you than on the model. It looks like what you've been after. I sort of share Angie's feeling about the straps on top, but I also get that it is HOT where you are! So objecting is a bit like someone telling me they don't like the look of a puffer with a scarf. Considering that I pretty much need to wear that combo or I will freeze to death, it's really a moot point.

And some of my feeling is simply about what's not flattering on me -- I shouldn't transfer that to you.

Chiming back in to say I normally have borderline poison eye for spaghetti straps (my own personal issue since they do not look good on my body, even with a good strapless bra), but these work on you, and I don't get a nightie vibe because the cut of the dress is unique. And I get a nightie vibe from something like 90% of the maxi dresses I see!

I like this one on you. It reads beachy yet it does have that bit of edge. I don't mind the spaghetti straps on you and it's quite appropriate for FL.

Janet, thanks. I've never had issue with spaghetti straps. Actually, in my late 20's I started actively searching them out to highlight my shoulders and make my small chest appear larger in contrast lol. Back then, I didn't even know the term camisole. I just wanted a tank with thin straps. And I had Kmart, Clothestime, or Miller's Outpost to choose from, no internet yet. He he he.
Now I don't seek them out, but I don't discount items because of them, either.

Oh, Susie, I'd sized up in the other one to see if it wouldn't be skin tight, which just made it fit weird. Sent it back asap. Sorry, no pics. The straps were fun, though!

Spaghetti straps in hothothot climates are like the women's consolation prize since they can't run around topless like the guys can.

Seriously when it's high summer and 100F+ or 95F+high humidity a lot of these items which read really bare in other contexts just come across as common sense. I think our eyes become used to seeing outfits 'on the internet' and they have a certain degree of 'finesse', grooming, modesty which may not have much at all to do with the circumstances in which many of us live. I know we all complain about it, but i find myself it can be hard to really adjust my mindset to what i intellectually know are the circumstances.

I know i was dumbfounded when i moved out near Mt. Diablo here in California at the number of women running around in just bike shorts and sports bras. My eyes were drying out from constantly popping out of their sockets!

Then, first summer, and they have to close Highway 4 one day because the asphalt's melting in the 114F heat. You can still see places the sidewalks buckled that they haven't fixed yet. The last two summers were definitely colder, but we're hitting mid seventies now (mid March) so i think we're back to the scorchers.

Mo, you look like a goddess, as usual. A practical and elegant dress for our hotter climes. That would be perfect for a hot summer nite dinner, just toss on a little shrug or scarf for variety (and on the off chance you'll need it for the warmth - ha!). Enjoy! steph
