Mask question for Runcarla

Runcarla, you mentioned modifying the Marfy mask pattern. Can you show what changes did you make? I tried shortening the beak (snout?) and lessened the protrusion of the curve but the result was quite smothering. Maybe my modifications were just too much. Thanks!

@pil - see photo below to see how/where I brought in the seam of the ‘snout’. You need some clearance away from your nose, so some ‘beak’ to avoid the smothering feeling.

My additional modifications are (1) the placement of the casing on top of the mask, and (2) channels on the side for the cord, rather than sewing in fixed ties or elastics.

Hmm, that is very similar to what I did - my nose and face must fill out the mask more!

@pil - you might try lowering the part under the eyes, and leaving the ‘beak’ length. I enlarged the pattern for a larger/men’s size, but then adjusted the pattern after the first male prototype (seen on DS#1) to have a greater ‘scoop’ under the eyes.

Using a wire to pinch in around the nose can also bring the mask down a little lower, and create more room to breath. I practiced wearing mine at home while I sewed! And learned some things about fit and comfort. You do want a snug fit under the chin and around the nose.

Now I understand all the brouhaha around ‘fit testing’ for the N95 masks!

Thanks, Rachylou and Carla! I may try lowering the part under the eyes as suggested. I have my grandma’s nose bump (is that an English nose thing??) so the wires have been uncomfortable and difficult to contour.

On the plus side, by the time I figure this out we won’t need to wear them anymore

@rachylou - I traced my modified woman’s/small pattern, then added half an inch all around - but kept the side parts, where the tie channels go, on the narrower side. Then I lowered the ‘scoop’ under the eyes about 1/4 inch.

This isn’t an easy mask for mass production, but it is a really good solution for community face covering.

Thanks Carla! My mum has asked if I can make one for the yard guy. She saw him today.

The thing about this mask is that it’s shaped. A little fiddly... but I think it’s a good design. I wore it eight hours at work no problem with flour flying: Good seal, no slipping. I do still want to tweak it a little bit for work, tack the two layers together in the center. It will probably take handstitching again... yes, a little fiddly, but worth it to me.

@rachylou - just an FYI - sewing through both layers isn’t recommended. The needle holes are a conduit for particles! Go figure!?

DS#2 was mask fit tested for his work (industrial bakery). Though he doesn’t have to always wear a mask, he has to wear a respirator (the kind with cartridges) when he’s sifting cocoa! Gives new meaning to ‘death by chocolate’.

Oh buggrit. Well, I guess I’m done then. But double layers don’t stay put all day. It’s annoying when that inner one bunches up!

And yeah: It has a name. Baker’s Lung. One of those Dickensian diseases!
