Marks and Spencer Black Straight Leg Jeans

I bought a pair of these a few days ago. It looks like a skinny on me because I have wide calves.

At first I tried on a UK size 10. I thought it fit me through the butt and thigh, but there's some extra fabric near the crotch on the front, and the waist was too big (I'm a pear, so I usually will take my jeans to the tailor to alter the waist).

Because of concerns about growing jeans that have stretch, I tried on a size eight. And bought it. Here's a photo (a bit blurry, sorry for that).

Do you think it actually fits? Or it's too tight? Should I exchange it for a size smaller (to make up for the "growth" after wash)?

BTW, I notice that there's a tad bit of fading in the jeans along the seams. Do you think it's acceptable?

Hmmm, it's hard to tell with this photo - they don't look tight in the thighs which is usually the most worrisome spot for pears but all that bunching around the knees is a little troubling. How's the bum & back of the thighs? Any creasing or bunching? I don't think the fading around the seams is a big deal but could be indicative of how these jeans will fade after a few washings. Would it bother you if they didn't stay black-black?

Hi Alexis - don't know if I can really be of any help or not - it's a little hard for me to see much detail in the pictures, but for what it's worth here's what I think! First, I have a question - do you want to wear the jeans as skinny jeans? That is, with tunic tops and tucked into boots? If so, have you tried regular skinny jeans, rather than these? If so, and the regular skinny jeans don't work, then I'd work either on getting these altered - or perhaps go down a size. How much do you expect them to stretch? That is just the worst when you think you have the correct size and then after a couple of wearings they stretch! In your 2 pics, they look a little baggy in the legs to me to be considered as skinnies - so again, I'm wondering what your intent is with these jeans? Also, about the fading at the seams - I don't mind fading, if I want my jeans to be more casual looking - but, I really mind it if I paid big bucks for the jeans. So . . . I'd say it's up to you - just depends on the look and intention you had for the jeans!

Shana - after wearing it for a few hours, there's some small creases at the back of my thighs. In fact I don't mind the bunching around the knees, but I would like to know if it's actually a fit problem?

Marley - regular skinny jeans don't work, because my calves are like 15 - 16" wide. But do you mean that it looks as is right now - a straight leg? I don't mind if it does, as long as if fits me. I just don't want it to bag in the butt and thigh area after a couple of washes.

I think they look really good! I sometimes have that bunching problem with skinny jeans at the ankles like in your first photo, so what I do is just get them hemmed/shortened. Then they're usually nice and neat.

As for fading, I prefer that because I think it often adds interest to jeans, but if you really don't feel comfortable with that then you should exchange them for a darker pair. But I think it looks quite good as is. The fading might go really well with distressed leather or faux leather boots or a jacket, if you have anything like that. It's one of my favorite looks for colder weather. But then that's just my personal taste.

All in all, I think skinny jeans suit you well.

Oh Ok - well then, its OK if they don't look like skinnies! You know, I am not familiar with this brand of denim. Maybe someone else on the forum is, and can give you info on whether or not the butt and legs stretch out after a couple of wearings? Sorry I can't help!

Oooo black skinnies from M&S I may have to pop in for a look! They look fine fitwise to me. I have some blue M&S skinnies and they do soften up with washing and wearing but I wouldn't say they have 'grown' though I do wash them after every couple of wears as the go a bit loose. I think the fading is just part of the course I have some black biker jeans from M&S which have fading on them I wonder whether black is just more prone to fading x

ETA- damn I won't be popping into M&S I'm supposed to be on a shopping ban!!!

They look good. Don't forget that jeans always strech a little. I always buy mine tight!
