Setting up weekly goals for the next three months is really intimidating to me for some reason. I guess it’s hard for me to forecast so far in advance because I don’t know if I will have a job by then, and so on. Angie, if you don’t mind, I’m going to follow in Kari’s footsteps and start with weekly goals for now. Maybe as I get more comfortable and complete my weekly goals, then I can forecast further into the future.
But for now, stemming off of my big goals for the next three months, here are my goals for this week:
- One of my big goals was to apply for one internship and job per weekday. So starting today, I am going to do this. I will apply to five jobs and five internships per week until I am hired for something I am happy with.
- Another goal for this week is to start researching volunteer opportunities. I have a few organizations in mind, but definitely need to do some further research so I can find a perfect fit. I can’t start volunteering until two weeks from now (when I am back in Chicago) but I will aim to have something set up for when I return. This means that this week I need to do my research and start contacting organizations.
- I also need to start researching classes to learn excel/gain other skills. KristenKP suggested looking into a community college and I will do that. I need to see what kind of classes are offered and tuition costs. Going to a class like this might be a great way to network as well.
So, to summarize, for the job search, my goals this week are to apply for 5 internships and 5 jobs (I’m already ahead of the game on this one!), do research about volunteer opportunities and classes and narrow down my findings to something that excites me.
Yesterday I got a phone call from an internship I already applied to. They wanted me to come in for an interview, but I am out of town so we will schedule for when I am back. In an effort to network, after the phone call I emailed the HR person and thanked her for her call and said I was looking forward to meeting her in two weeks. She responded saying something along the same lines. I think I made a good impression by following up with an email.
I also bought an interview suit yesterday. I had some major luck with the Nordstrom clearance rack and found a Tahari skirt suit for about $100. My mom loves it, but I have some doubts (it’s grey and I don’t usually wear skirts!) I will post pictures eventually. I told my mom that hopefully finding the suit brings me good luck in the job search!
How’s that Angie? Do you mind if I just set up weekly goals for now?
