Hi Isabel, thanks for asking! My mom is still in the ICU but things are getting a little better each day. It will take quite a bit of time for her condition to improve (we don't know how long). She has kidney and respiratory failure from septic shock (a horrible infection spread throughout her whole body). Her breathing is getting better and they hope to take her off the breathing machine soon, but her kidney function is still not coming back. It's just a waiting game at this point -- we have to wait for her body to start getting better because medicine has done as much as it can. The specialists are optimistic that she will get better because she is still young, but it will take time.

I am spending my days sitting in the ICU waiting room. I have started bringing my laptop with me so I may be on the forum more often now. I will keep everyone updated as things progress. Your concern is greatly appreciated!

Oh Marianna, that is exactly what happened to my father a few years ago. (if it's any consolation, he pulled through and is doing wonderful now).

I've been thinking about you a lot too, thank you for this update. I'm so happy to hear your Mum's breathing is getting better. Hang in there and please let us know if there's anything we can do.

Oh my goodness. I am late to this as I've been off of the forum for a couple of weeks. I'm sorry to hear about your mother's illness. Waiting in the hospital is such a helpless feeling.

I'm glad you're in a position to be able to be by her side through this. I'm sure it means the world to her!

I missed this until now.. So sorry you are going through this dificult time, Marianna. It's so hard to wait these things out, but how wonderful you can be there for her and see first hand the care she is receiving. Sending good thoughts and prayers for a full recovery! Keep us posted.

Marianna: He was in ICU for about 2 months and was then transferred to a regular ward for another 3 weeks, I think. It seems very, very long, but every case is different of course (and I think your Mum is also much younger, my father was 68 at the time). I know it's frustrating and very upsetting, but the ICU is the best place your Mum can be right now.

Oh Marianna, it must be so scary for you, but I am sure that your presence at her side is helping your Mum get better.

My sister had kidney failure as the result of a reaction to an antibiotic, thankfully she is ok, but it is a waiting game.

Hopefully, we will be able to help you pass the time while you wait.

I knew it was serious, but I had no idea how serious and the recovery she is facing. I am so sorry. I am very heartened to hear that she is improving and that most people survive this - she will be one of them.

I had no idea how prevalent this is...wow, we take so much for granted every day.

Please let us know when she feels up to cards or flowers. And if you can, please do keep us posted for as long as it takes.

I love the idea that we will keep you entertained (per londonwiki ) - I am very bad at jokes and don't have much other talent, so that will have to fall to the other ladies. Please, please let us know if there is anything that will help you pass the time a little better.

Marianna, you got me to de-lurk! I'm so sorry to hear about your mother, but I'm glad she's improving. Two years ago my father-in-law had pneumonia that went untreated, which resulted in septic shock. He was a smoker, non-compliant diabetic, had heart disease...the list goes on. He is still with us today! I can't remember exactly how long, but he was on the vent for somewhere between 10-14 days. We were all ready to say our goodbyes, but the doctors put him on Xigris, which is supposed to halt the cascade of organ failure. It worked, but he improved very slowly. I know how excruciating it is to wait for improvement. I also know how awful it is to hang out in the ICU waiting room day after day. I'm keeping your family in my prayers and sending healthy vibes! I think her poor kidneys just need time...her body is dealing with so much! Sending you big hugs!

Boof, thanks for sharing your story! My mom's septic shock resulted from untreated kidney stones! It is just amazing that something so common/an out-patient procedure could result in such a severe infection. Let this be a lesson to all of us: Don't let health problems linger. See a doctor!

Marianna, my thoughts are with you and your mother. It's not easy to go sit in a hospital day after day.
A friend is recovering from septic shock after about 3 weeks in ICU, then a couple of months at a nursing home for rehab. He's in his early 60's and doesn't know what happened to cause it other than possibly a steroid injection for neck pain. He still has the neck pain and still isn't back to work full time. It seems to take a long time to recover.
