Yeah, even though I last dated someone other than my husband 15 years ago, it happened back then too. I recall a couple of guys in particular who really mystified me -- we got along great, had fun, promised to call, etc., and then... nothing.
I always just assumed they met someone else and fell madly in love, or something. Yeah, I was bummed, but I moved on. The breakups after months or years of dating were much harder. I'd rather get let down early than have something drag on that isn't going to work.
Oh, I ETA that I was guilty of this too. I "disappeared" on a couple of guys after a date or two, usually because someone more interesting came along or something bothered me about them. I was not comfortable with confrontation so I never told them, I just didn't return their calls. So I don't think it's fair to say it's just a Guy Thing.
