Well, I don't know about you, but I wear my belted coats open quite a bit. I don't like tieing the belt in back because the knot digs into my back when I'm seated. Tucking the ends into the pockets (where I like to stuff my hands) tends to dislodge the ties and they end up slithering through the belt loops and trailing behind me like a tail. Until now! A photo of trench belt hacks was sent to my Pinterest feed. I've lost the site and feel bad I can't give credit where credit is due (haven't been able to find it again) but after tieing my belt this way 3 days ago, it hasn't slipped and the 'knots' lie flat and don't crinkle the belt.

This might help someone - or you might already know this.
