Male fashion influences? - YouLookFab Forum

I should probably think this through a little bit, about who are really mine...
but do you have any male fashion influences?

I know this is just a smattering, but here's who I've come up with:

1. Johnny Depp, whose shabby chic really goes beyond a surface level. Encouraging me to really be aware of the quality of vintage, etc.

2. Deion Sanders, former NFL pro, and coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, my hometown.
I was immediately impressed with his gold sunglasses, which became such a hit, he collaborated with the company. I can also see he treats bright white with such intentionality. (I will be ordering his sunglasses.)

3. Pharrell Williams, musician, producer and now head designer for men's fashion for Louis Vuitton. I don't know how he specifically influences ME, but he is so current, with such a sharp sense of dandyism, that he is good to pay attention to.

4. Larry David, creator, writer, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld. Between his "just out of the package" gym t-shirts and drab blazers, he seems to have been one of the leaders of smart casual. White Dad sneakers never looked so good!
A lesson in comfort, consistency, and a closet full of neutrals. From him I am reminded the power of sticking with a few things...and that normcore looks good if you celebrate it.

Oh most definitely! Not celebs necessarily for me though. Might be from street style photos, a few people on Instagram, a couple of designers.

Usually what I’m drawn to are silhouettes, colors, textures and interesting contrasts and juxtapositions and volumes.

Fun topic! I love men's runway shows - I often find the looks much more approachable than women's. I don't have any specific male celebrity in mind, except maybe Kendrick Lamar at last year's superbowl.

Years ago...ten or fifteen?...there was a lovely photo on the Sartorialist blog of a woman walking across a city square, probably in Paris or Rome. In her high heels she was navigating the cobblestones, while one hand held her purse and the other held down her skirt in the wind. In the background were some gents, standing still in their flat shoes, beautifully cut trousers and jackets...with plenty of pockets and totally hands free (or maybe with a cigarette). It was one of those click moments where I realized I wanted to dress more like them...for the freedom alone, but I also love the look.

Oh, maybe Bill Nighy is a good male fashion icon. He always looks impeccably dressed, yet not overdone to my eye.

Sloper--I'm sure there is a lot out there, and then when you include it is becoming more common for men to wear skirts and dresses--that are made for men, even more!
Jaime--I did not see the Superbowl, but I remember hearing about him. I feel there was some dumb controversy--people being angry that there was a rapper instead of a singer. I know this year there is more controversy with Bad Bunny.
I saw two images of Lamar's outfits just now--an old-school jeans and letter jacket look. And a sharp all-black suit with gold decor. Both were great, but I love an all-black formal look.
Angie--Duran Duran was great! Looking them up now, I see their looks were very preppy, but rockerish. Parachute pants and large blazers--matching.
Judy--thanks! I think I realized I liked Larry David's style a while ago, but I may have been subconsciously influenced by Vogue and others writing about him.
I can absolutely picture that Italian photo. Of course, I would still want to be the woman...I just don't know how I would do that!

Judy and Avicennia--I forgot you mentioned Bill Nighy. I don't know him outside Love Actually, but he dominates that movie! I can see he has a real flair, and I can also see he deeply respects formal wear, like I do.

I watch Reggie Casual's videos on YouTube. He is an American married to a Japanese lady and lives in Tokyo. He comments on Japanese fashion and trends, focusing on men's wear, but as lots of the fashion and style in Tokyo is unisex. I enjoy his deep knowledge of Japanese fashion, even though I don't dress in that style myself. I admire the men's "City Boy" style in Japan - which is explained in this article.

Like Jaime, I tend to prefer the men's runway shows. I also find much of the clothing more interesting and potentially wearable.

As for personal icons, David Bowie comes to mind, for his recognition that clothes create a story. And the androgyny.

But also early Beatles.

And Beau Brummel.

Bijou--how fun. I skimmed the first few paragraphs of that article, and now want to read the rest. I have not heard of "City Boy," but I have long admired Tokyo style. It sounds like a movement to give men much more permission to get in touch with fashion and decor.
Angie--Milan! Well, that is saying something. You need serious suiting to make a statement in Milan.
Donna--great point! Now I want to look through all those old photos. Not only a music influence, but a fashion one.
Suz--early Beatles style is disarming and intimidating at the same time. I love it! I know David Bowie made huge waves in androgyny, and I saw a documentary where they said he shocked his audience when he showed up on stage not in his androgynous, glam look, but with short hair and "a little Motown suit."

Really interesting.

After watching “Get Back”, documentary about The Beatles in 1970 I became obsessed with Paul and George’s style. George is so stylish and bold - Paul looks so vigorous and healthy.

I just rewatched Notorious featuring Cary Grant and kept looking at the fit of his suits. So good.

On the red carpet I like Coleman Domingo - so flamboyant but also wearable.

I personally don't really have any... but aw, Judy- how did i forgot about that blog! Italian men(and women!) were always so welldressed on The Sartorialist! Off to revisiting after a few years of my hiatus from there...Thank you!

Sal--Colman Domingo--knew the name, but now he is on my radar. You are right, flamboyant! I have not seen that documentary, but love the Beatles. I think of their style as uniform across the 4, but I guess not in later years.

lyn67 He is still on instagram, but yes, that was a great blog, guess it was before Instagram. European men do seem to dress so much better than Americans...though his crowd was outside of fashion shows, so they are uber stylish!

I watch Parker York Smith—great ideas for outfit creation and accessories.
