Making a Uniform - YouLookFab Forum

Oh yay, my employment situation has shifted again, and with it a shift in priorities. I just can't spend what I used to. I want to think about my clothing less and be happy with what I have. And the only way to do this is with DISCIPLINE, ladies! I need STRUCTURE! I need a UNIFORM!

I was very impressed by coffeespainedcashmere's posts (http://coffeestainedcashmere.blogspot.com/) - I pasted the images below. Look how lovely and sophisticated and monochromatic! Now I just need to winnow and prune and allow for the fact that I cannot wear a single shirt all week (as shown) without stinking up the joint. And that I do wear a *teeeeeeeny* bit more color than this.

The hard part will be purging and not re-acquiring. I think I need to be strict and stick to classic archetextural - very classic cuts in interesting fabrics.

I heartily agree with this. I'm working on this myself and I love the graphics. Can't wait to see how you do. Myself, I created an OCD spreadsheet on what I wear everyday so I can pinpoint what I pull out day to day :). I'm also on a shopping hiatus until I figure out what kind of holes I have in my wardrobe besides more foundational stuff like bras. Making do with what I have and grabbing ideas on how to rework what I own through others WIW posts!

Angie - I have too many things that don't fit in, or for whatever reason don't get worn. Identify and discard, says I!

Yep, I think that when you disgard, you will be there! You have an awesome wardrobe already, always thought so. And the beauty of your architextural style is that 1) it never goes off trend, and 2) you never have to buy new/full price if you don't want to. You go with your uniform, girl!

Holy gods of fashion I have everything on those pics, down to the Hunter boots. I can use an updated pointy toe pump.

I love your idea. I used to have a pretty standard uniform pre YLF. It is practical, but it can be boring.

I could see the color and assortment (same number of tops, bottoms, outerwear) aspects of this working for you but the individual pieces - just looking quickly - look conservative for your style. Unless you feel yourself moving in a more Classics direction.

Coco, the foundations of my wardrobe have always been classics - black pants, jeans, white tanks. Then I add something mad like a layered tank, or bright shoes. Right now I want to buy things that are utterly classic like the perfect black cashmere vneck, a white textured pullover, etc. I want to go with interesting basics, essentially.

The biggest issue I have right now is fit in my old pants, which sucks because many of them were workhorses. I'm going to put them into a holding bin and see what happens, because my body has shifted.

Okay, usually I see things like this from the Vivienne files or the like and it makes me yawn, big time. This I like! Not sure if it's the more streamlined, urban look or what . . . but I could totally see your wardrobe working this way. You already pinpointed your purge parameters (fit) so now you just need to start implementing!

I think you have a great foundation of clothes from what I've seen. You could purchase a couple of black or gray pants and a couple of button downs to be the main "uniform" pieces and then mix it up with what you have, right?

Tex - well, I could, but the goal is to get rid of stuff. I'm not going to copy this lookbook exactly, just use it as an analogue. Then once my stuff is gone, I can think about adding.

Dana, your palette may be similar, but the archetextural pieces of yours + footwear are INFINITELY more interesting. I suppose your old clothes simply hang on you and are too complicated to alter? What a shame.

This is great - I think this is where I'm heading - really great quality modern classic pieces with, for me, something avant garde thrown in the mix.

Looks like a great plan, I've been coming around to the idea of simpler clothing pieces and a monochromatic color scheme.

Gorgeous polyvore! This really speaks to me because I don't have many tops. I wear the same 4 or 5 and change the *other* elements of the outfit, like these pictures show. For some reason I have a hard time finding tops I like.

Yes, you are nearly there. You'll have fun identifying the outliers and then you can slowly add a piece or two, from time to time. I read a post on uniform building this morning:
