Making a smart return I'm sad about.

I am forcing myself to return a jacket I love that isn't working at all.

I bought a cute black pointe peplum jacket after seeing it on another blog. I love it...cute, on trend, comfortable and super flattering. And I haven't worn it in two months.

The problem is it has a wide scoop neck and I can't get it to look right with any tops. They are either too high and show too much, making the jacket neckline look odd, or too low and don't show at all, or v neck and cut across the jacket's scoop neck. I just tried it on with everything that survived the purge and only one top works.

I don't think I can force it to work. Two months is telling me the truth. Fab wisdom says return it, right?

Yes, you should probably return unless you are willing to add a couple of new tops to your wardrobe. Mind you, you might be able to do that with simple Ts that had the correct scoop or crew neck. But otherwise, better let it go.

That particular neckline is the devil to work with. It's always so tempting and always proves difficult.

I agree - better to return and replace with a jacket you can wear often. I have one of these rounded scoop neck jackets too and have only worn it twice. It's now in the "to be sold/donated" drawer.

I agree. Best to let it go and replace it with something you will wear.

Trying to force it now, when you haven't worn it in 2 months, will probably leave it an orphan later.

Return and get something you will wear the heck out of!

Oh, bummer! But yes, unless you're wanting/willing to add the workable neckline, it doesn't seem like you're going to wear it. Too bad, but best to get your $ back and put it toward something useable.

What a bummer! But I agree with the group, it's best to return it. Something fab and 'right' might be waiting for you at the store when you make the return.

That is a bummer. I'm sorry. Like you said, if you haven't worn it in 2 months, that's telling you something.

Excellent decision! Return it and don't look back. This will free you to find something you actually can wear, and that will make you happy.

Definitely return. I have been in exactly your position before, many times. When I've returned it, I was happy. When I've kept it, it turned out to be a waste of money because I never wore it. It would be different if you had a million things it worked with but you were slow to pull it out of the closet. Or if you were willing to buy things to go with it because you loved it so much. When you have nothing to go with it and you aren't ready to build a capsule around it, it needs to go back.

Although it's really hard to return something like that (when it looks sooooo good in another blog and you can envision a million outfits with it in your wardrobe) you are shopping smart! You are right, the 2 months tell the tale and you need something that's going to work better with your current wardrobe.

Can't wait to see what you do find with that money now.

I used to buy a lot of things that looked like they ought to work with my wardrobe, mix & match and so on, and then found they did not. Just the type of thing you encountered--necklines, proportions, something that just doesn't work at home the way you think it would. I'm doing better--not perfect, though--about getting an item home and really trying it on with multiple things right away, tags still on to see if it fits in.

It doesn't mean I won't ever buy something that might just the starting point for a special outfit or new direction, and will require other pieces, but I want to have my eyes open and have a plan if that's what I'm doing.

A good decision I think. Better to return while you can still get a refund. I took a jacket back myself today which I loved, but it just wasn't fitting right, so I'm feeling your pain

Peri I think it is the right decision. I think these funds will go nicely towards one of the items on your list and it is great that you are still in the return window. It is hard to let it go but something better will come around that fits your style goals.

I get pretty bummed out when something that "ought" to work doesn't. For me, part of that feeling is because I spend so much time trying to find the "right" item that when I realize I need to return it, going back out to find its successor seems really hard/daunting.

But! (there's always a "but") You can totally do this -- something better is out there, just waiting for you.

Done, and now I have $100 to spend on something I will actually wear.

Thanks for all the encouragement. Now I've learned that I am an emotional shopper...that's probably also why purging is so hard.
