Madmen Poll: Betty v.s. Joanie Style

If you don't watch "Madmen", this will sound like Greek. But if you do,whose style do you prefer?

While I prefer looking at Joanie - I just love her face and curves and could stare at her beauty all day, I prefer the way Betty dresses. So watch out for that distinction when you answer this thread.

We'll keep slick Don Draper out of it for the time being :0)

I prefer the way Joan dresses. Partly it's because I identify more with her body type, but also because she usually looks a little more powerful and sophisticated to me. This is probably because she works in an office though. I've only watched about two seasons so far, so maybe their styles have evolved some.

That's interesting, Malcontent. I think Betty looks equally sophisticated - sometimes more sophistocated. But Betty doesn't work in an office whereas Joan does.

As for Betty's power v.s. Joan's - that all changes in season 3.

I prefer Joan's style. But given the scripts, we see very little of her outside the office: we get to see Betty in more varied clothing. I love what she wore to Rome.

Hmmm. I'd probably be more apt to wear Joan's clothing (a little less snug though for me) but I identify more with her hourglass curves BUT I like the concept of the way Betty dresses more if that makes sense. On any given day though, I'd definitely be more apt to wear Joan's fitted dresses over say, for example, the polka-dot dress Betty wore to host the dinner party in season 2.

okay, did a google search... I think I would have to say that I adore Betty's style, although I probably wouldn't dress that way myself. Joanie seems to have a much more sophisticated style.. which isn't as much fun to look at.
of course I made that assessment after a 60 second thorough google research session

I do not watch this show and have 0 interest in popular television in general, but I have seen Christina Hendricks enough times to know that I do NOT envy her figure.

I don't watch the show, but I have seen lots of clips and images. At first I really liked Joan's style: the fearless way she proudly shows off her curves, the authority and strength she just oozes even if she has no actual power. But the last few months I've come to prefer Betty's look; she's worn a lot of traditional garb, but there's something very clever and fashion-forward about many of the things I saw her in last season.

This dress in particular stands out in my mind.

How about some pictures? Even though my brother has been telling me to watch Madmen for ages, we just haven't got around to it. Part of it is waiting for the season to come out on DVD. But my interest is piqued every time I hear about it.

Wow. Many Joanie-style supporters here. And I so, so, so prefer Betty's wardrobe! I guess it's just you and me Ele. Betty's outfit in Rome was sublime. Her maternity ensembles were fabulous too. Her "dressy events wear" leaves me with goose bumps, and so does her equestrian look.

Patience you can get it all on Netflix. That's how we watched it.

I am not into watching the tele either. At all. But made the exception with Madmen and BSG. Maya, you would really enjoy those shows.

I actually don't think I'd like it, based on what I know of it. Too many affairs to keep track of.

BSG I probably would enjoy, but not enough to voluntarily seek it out and watch it.

Okay, trying to make sense of my answer. I re-read the question and I guess I wasn't really answering what you are asking. I get more excited during each episode to see what Betty will wear. Her outfits keep me guessing more and are more intriguing to me. I feel admiration for Joan in the way that she dresses so fearlessly and I personally woudl be more inclined myself to wear Joan's clothing. But in terms of can't-wait-to-see what they wear - it's Betty for me. However, I don't think I could wear any of her clothes - I do not have that figure!

I don't have a television, but someone loaned me the first season of Madmen on DVD and I was hooked. I just finished Netflixing the 3rd season. I love how the evolution of the characters matches the unfolding of the turbulent 1960s. It was a joy to see Peggy evolve from a wallflowerish secretary into a copywriter and a strong young woman who can hold her own, and I love the style evolution as well--from ponytails and Peter Pan collars to somewhat more grown-up ensembles. In fact, I think it was Joan who told her, "If you don't want to be treated like a little girl, then stop dressing like one." As for Betty vs. Joan, I adore Joan's sophisticated, curve-hugging attire. But I agree with you, Angie, Betty's equestrian outfits were killer, as was that white dress she wore to her father's house after his stroke. Oh, and that amazing dress she wore the first day back home after Rome. Was that an Emilio Pucci dress? January Jones is probably one of the few women who can carry off a maxi dress like that!

I'll take Betty's style any day. Angie, I remember those equestrian outfits well - I'm drooling a little now When I first saw her Rome outfit I immediately wondered "what would Angie think?" I also really enjoyed Betty's changing style during the last season.

I admire Joan's dresses in theory, but they also got a little predictable for me.

Well, I have to say that I adore Joan. When was the last time you saw a rounded redhead as a sex symbol on any tv show? I love her feminine ways, the manner in which she is both extremely effective at the office as well as wildly appealing, the way she dresses for a body that clothes aren't always made to flatter. I smiled when the guys at the office stated something to the effect that, Marilyn Monroe only wishes she could look like Joan Holloway!

However, I like but don't love her overall style. That drat pen necklace she always wears at the office might be efficient but it drives me nuts, and some of the colours she sports and cuts she wears are a mite matronly.

I generally prefer Betty Draper's style, even though sometimes the cute prints and preppy details are a bit twee for my taste. I love her hairstyle, her well-groomed brows and red lipstick, her more "grown up" outfits - even the casual clothes like her riding clothes or her cropped pants and neat tops. One of Don's clients compares her to Grace Kelly and the costumers do a good job of slotting her into that Philadelphia Main Line, private girls' college, WASPy look that I admire (but doesn't always suit me).

It's funny that I think both of those women are stunning but when I see photos of them in "Real life," whether styled for major events or just running errands in their own clothes, I'm always disappointed. I think they both look better in their costumes and tv makeup/hair than in their choices for 2010!

I much preferred Joan's style in the first and second season but in the third season, Betty's style blew me away! I particularly loved the dress which she wore when she met Henry in the tearoom. I can't wait for season four!

Mac, I hear, you. I like Betty's off screen style too. But Joanie's off screen style is disappointing. She also doesn't look as pretty. How is that even possible?

Julie, you MUST watch the series. The fashion will launch you into orbit - at least, Betty's fashion will (very devoted Betty style fan here). It just gets better and better.

I really grew to enjoy everything about Trudy too. I can't wait for season #4.
