Lucky magazine a good choice?

For fashionistas who don't relate too well to Vogue and Marie Claire, other expensive high fashion spreads, etc? Amazon has Kindle deals right now and Lucky, Allure, and Glamour are all only $3. I've never read Lucky but am intrigued. I did enjoy their guide to styles book a few years ago that I checked out of the library.

EDIT: I really love People Style Watch but haven't found a deal on it. Hoping this might be similar?

I don't know the other magazine but I love my Lucky! They have good pictures, not too much unrelatable stylist stuff, and the iPad version is fun.

Thanks. I will sign up for Lucky. I may sign up for Allure as well. I am not familiar with that one, but I love most fashion magazines.

Allure is great for makeup and product info (their Best of Beauty awards are an annual bible!).

I used to subscribe to Lucky and have recently re subscribed through one of those cheapie Amazon deals. I've been a little disappointed, actually. It's not as dense as it used to be and I often finish an issue thinking 'is that it?' That said, it's not horrible and they do a decent job in translating the trends for 'regular gals'.

Have you considered InStyle? A few years ago it was too celebrity focused imo, but I've gotten some recent issues from the newsstand and I think it's probably my favorite fashion magazine right now. That and More, which is supposedly focused on the 40+ crowd and has some non fashion articles as well, but the fashion stuff is really well done too.

I love InStyle. I actually have an app on my iPad that for $15 a month gives me unlimited access to 100+ magazines, including Instyle, Lucky, People StyleWatch, etc etc etc.

It's called Next Issue and no, I don't get any referral or commission, to me it's just that great

Laura, I do recall Instyle as more celeb focused, too. I basically want fashion that does inspire me, but that I can relate to. I know I'm supposed to take the Vogue, etc, spreads as just inspiration but I'd rather read a mag where I can imagine wearing what that person has on in my life, not in some fantasy, with a price tag to match!
Well, for just $3 I may as well give it a go. I mean, I'd spend that on one issue in the airport for a layover, right?

I've always found lucky to be extremely focused on SHOPPING. Not as much general discussion of fashion or style. It's fun, but not very substantial IMO. But for 3 bucks? Why not!

I like instyle a lot.

InStyle has definitely gotten more down to earth, which is why I like it. Lots of features on dressing for your shape, dressing on a budget, etc. they do still have a celebrity feature or two each issue, but then even Lucky usually does that. Worth picking up an issue in the store to see if you like it, maybe.

I personally don't like reading magazines with lots of pictures and diagrams on my kindle, but if you have a fire you might be ok. Seems like the pictures etc. would be annoying in a smaller format. I unsubscribed from most of my paper magazines a couple years ago, but then resubscribed to the ones I really like, because I find them actually more portable than the e-versions.

I keep on thinking about trying Next Issue on my iPad but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Lucky definitely skews young. The tone might be described as Junior Breathless -- they're always "obsessed" with something that's "insanely" comfortable/cute/flattering.

I find it fun to peek into to see what's new, but I don't get a great deal of good style ideas there.

thanks for the input. I decided to go for it. For one thing, I need to learn how to actually use my Kindle and these things called apps he he. It will be a $3 lesson in how. Plus it also includes print issues so I can see if the pictures on the digital version don't compare and which I prefer.

Hey Mo. I do an auto-renewal subscription (mag junkie here) - I know they give you 30 days free trial (or at least that is what I got when I signed up). It's worth it for me - I get US magazine access outside of the US, saves me the weight in my luggage (mags are heavy!) and I get to explore other mags I wouldn't normally pay for (travel, photography, biking, HGTV mag, you name it). If you are remotely interested I would check it out. They add more all of the time, too, so I keep checking back and adding more. You can go to back issues as well. Honestly it is the #1 used app on my iPad. Headed to airport now, can't wait to dig into some mags during my wait time.

I've never subscribed to Lucky, but a month or so it started coming in the mail. No idea why...maybe it was some bonus from something I bought online? It's fun to flip through.

I cancelled my Lucky subscription a while ago - I felt it had little substance and used too many cliches (obsessed, luxe, cool-girl) that drove me nuts. I prefer People StyleWatch which has lots of pictures. Just my 2 cents.

ETA: just read comments. April, "junior breathless" needs to be bronzed!

ABC, I saw that 30 day trial and decided I will do it on the 25th of this month to correspond with travel happening next month! Then I will have lots of plane time to explore the many issues.

I'm a magazine junkie. I really enjoy Lucky (enjoyed it even more when they gave you stickers to mark things you like, lots o' fun, esp. on plane rides). I'm also a fan of InStyle and People Style. For me, tho, none of these is capital-F Fashion. But then again, I don't think Vogue is either anymore. For that, I think you have to go W and maybe something like Surface. Vanity Fair is the only thing kind of still kicking when it comes to society, IMHO.

I used to love Lucky! But I agree with everyone who said the content became less substantial and it's more shopping focused than other fashion magazines. It's fun to flip through for cheap, though. Love me some People Style Watch! I finally renewed my subscription (I try to rotate my fashion magazine subscriptions from year to year) when they offered me a year for ten bucks. I gave Redbook a try when they mailed me an offer for a year for $5, but I won't be renewing. I don't like the new Redbook as much as the old. The old one always had great shopping finds and ideas for remixing clothes. The new version still has some great shopping finds, but not as much good fashion advice IMO. InStyle is the only one I have on automatic renewal- definitely worth the $26 I think, because in addition to their regular monthly issues, my subscription includes one or two specialty issues per year.

Yeah, I'm not wowed by the Lucky so far. But I've never used Kindle for a magazine either, so it could be partly that. Also, spring trends aren't my fave. Pastels and full skirts and pink lipstick . . . ya know.
I might bite the bullet and buy PeopleStyleWatch but want to try the Next Issue trial first in a few weeks.

I used to subscribe to Lucky (the magazine about shopping! they used to proudly proclaim...maybe not so much now?). I liked it, but it seemed to be losing its sparkle somehow. I just paged through it once and was done. I'm trying to figure out what to subscribe to now. I might go back to InStyle. I get PFW for free at my hairstylists. I'll be interested to hear what you think of Lucky after a few issues.

Do check out Le Catch.com. It replaces Lucky mag for me completely. The writer/editor was an editor for Lucky and I love her style. She is Marlien Rentmeester.

For those who prefer the paper version of magazines, check out mag hound.com.

You choose a level, like 3 or 5 a month for a flat amount. You can switch to different magazines whenever you want or suspend your subscription. I think it's just month to month with no long term commitment. There is a small up charge for some magazines, I think InStyle might be one of them. I haven't used it for a while but when I did, it seemed like a good deal.

Mo - I used to enjoy Lucky. They recently changed this editor, some protege of Anna Wintour. I have not been impressed. I like Instyle but some issues are better than others. But both put clothes in a real world not fantasy context which I find helpful. I am not a huge fan of Glamour but i have not read it recently so this may not be fair.
