Low Rise Jeans - a butt perspective

Hey everyone, new poster here! I've been a long time lurker and just thought of a question fellow forum-goers may be able to help me with.

Ok: I'm 5'3", 120lbs, with a short torso, poorly defined waist and big hips. My butt is pretty much my favorite part of my body and I am hypersensitive to how different styles of clothing make it look. I've tried on a lot of jeans and it seems as if I've come to the opposite conclusion from the mainstream as to what styles are the most flattering.

I've always been told that flat, unadorned pockets will be the most flattering to the butt, and that midrise jeans are the most flattering. However, in my experience anything other than a VERY low rise has a horrible lengthening effect on my butt, and all my favorite jeans are the ones with button flaps. The worst ones I've found are the ones with no pockets at all - makes everything look long and flat.

Any thoughts? I seem to be unique in this view. Thanks in advance!

There are guidelines, and then there's the eyeball test. Your eyeball test is telling you that the usual guidelines and rules don't work for you. That happens!

I am only 5', with narrow boyish hips, ill-defined waist, and flat-ish butt. I am supposed to look best in flap pockets and I HATE them. Unadorned pockets do work best - however! Not any pocket will do. Size of pocket and pocket placement are absolutely critical.

Even more important than the pockets, I've found, is the size of the yoke. If the yoke is too long, then the pockets will start about halfway down my butt, which looks silly and ridiculous and makes my (actually fairly tiny) butt look enormous.

I don't wear low-rise because of my belly, but I'm guessing that low-rise don't have this yoke, or the yoke is minimal? Take a look at the jeans that flatter you, see if that isn't the case. I'm curious now..

P.s. I hate the flap pockets mostly because they get in the way of my tops, since I like to wear untucked tops. They may look nice out of the shop, but after one wash, the flaps tend to curl and not want to stay flat.

Sorry, could you explain what "yoke" is? From your description it sounds like the bit of fabric between the waistband and pockets. If that is true, then I'd have to guess (can't look at my jeans since I'm at work) that the yoke is quite short.

So maybe it has been more of a coincidence about the button pockets, and more because of the yoke? I'll have to check my pants out when I get home...

Welcome to the forum, aussiegrl! If you're short in the rise, and this not the same as being short-waited, then a low rise probably fits like a mid rise on you. Does that make sense?

How do you prevent bottom cleavage with a very low rise, especially when you sit down?

Angie, I'm having a little trouble visualizing what you mean. I'm pretty sure I am short-waisted (I did your two hands trick to figure it out), and low rise jeans usually sit 2-3 inches below my bellybutton. How would you compare being short in the rise to short-waisted?

I do battle with bottom cleavage problems with brand new jeans, but I solve it by wearing belts and longer shirts, at least until the pants stretch out. In my view it's worth it because low rise jeans never fail to make me feel awesome

I always thought adorned vs. unadorned pockets depended on the type of butt you have. So you may have the body for the adorned pockets.

Being short-waisted has nothing in common with being short in the rise. The two are totally unrelated. At 5' 3" though you could have a short rise, which makes low rises work quite well. This *might* be the case.

I have absolutely no idea about what to suggest as I am new on the forum and am currently myself working out short-waisted, short-rise and all that other lingo stuff myself atthe moment!

Is there a way to find out if I have a short rise, by looking at my measurements at all? Not that it's really important but I'm just curious.

In addition to front rise, you then have the issue of back rise too. The more hips/butt you have, the longer you need for the back rise. If your backside is flat and not very curvy, then you need a shorter rise.

I figured this out by measuring my most flattering jeans, and the most unflattering ones. Essentially my best bet is to have a back rise that is nearly the same as the front, or no more than an inch longer!

And yes, that is what I meant by yoke.
