Low-down on the Leith's Track Pants

Ok, I can't believe I am brave enough to post these pictures but I feel like I am doing a service by showing you how "not" to wear these.

I originally ordered a Medium and I liked the way they fit through the bodybut they were too short and pulling at the ankle (I'm 5'9 and a 33 1/2 inch inseam) with the zippers slightly open so I exchanged for the large and I'm just not sure I'm cut out for the baggy pants silhouette. I love the idea and the casual chic vibe, but they seem really difficult to style or work with, at least for me.

Outfit 6 is horrific, but posted anyway just so you know what I'm up against:)

Thoughts? I won't be offended, I promise.

Hey, Carole - I think these are great on you - you need to style them up a little bit, but they are perfect! First of all, I would find a slouchy t-shirt or blouse-y top, and tuck it loosely. Then, report back with more photos. These are totally going to work for you!

Thanks, Laura. Believe it or not the hot pink t-shirt is very slouchy and I tried tucking loosely but it looked strange. Back to the drawing board!

I like the way you styled #3! I think they look really good on you...slouchy pants look good on tall figures!

Carole, I actually find these very flattering on you, and I think the casual ways you've styled them work well! I'm glad to see they can work well with non heeled shoes. I think they look great on you!

Carole, I think these look great on you and are really flattering. You probably remember that you and I have similar height and body types. The L on you fits like it does on me, which is with the waist band on the high hip (as seen in your pic #2) and not up on the natural waist line. This looks best with semi-tucking and is waist lengthening. With this size pants, the leg length is too short if I wear the waist band up on my natural waist.

I also bought and kept the XL, which I can wear up on my natural waist for a bit of a different profile and also works better under longer tops and jackets I've found because I don't have to worry about waist band creep and having to pull up or needing to adjust where the waist band is if I move around a lot.

I have been trying to figure out my Leith pants as well and I too am struggling. I think I'm going to have to invest in some new tops to go with them.

Cinnamon F and Raisin-You are so sweet, I can't help but feel these are a little less than flattering especially 6. Maybe it will take a little getting used to.

Claudia-Thanks for chiming in. It helps to have a body double to help with the styling. I have not mastered the semi-tuck, going to have to practice and repost. Have you posted any pictures with these? I'm thinking not, right?

Ok, I admit the pink t-shirt is not really the way to go, but all the outfits before the shirt look fab!

Are all the pics of the new larger size pants?

mtgrl-That is the exact Gap top I am wearing in 6-7-8. In theory it should work, but doesn't look right. I tried to semi tuck but guess I need a tutorial on that because I couldn't get that to look right either. Maybe this whole look is just over my head. Anxious to see what you come up with, have you posted pictures?

That's funny that it's the same shirt! I have the navy one and I semi tucked. I tuck my shirt all the way in and then pull out the back and the sides a bit (can't seem to do it otherwise). My shirt is almost too big for me though.

I wonder if it has to do with the navy vs. coral? I'm wearing my pants a little lower too ( the smaller size felt too snug in the waist so I kept the bigger size).

I agree that #1-5 look good, and the pinnk tee not as good to me.

Could it be the straight line and tighter fit across the hips? The black top does that too, but it's black on black. I really like the curved hemlines and floaty, drapey tops with them

I envision that a slouchy top with a banded bottom would work (but what do I know?), but the body fabric would be slouchy just above the band.

Those will work on you for sure, unless you just don't like the look, which I can understand as there are some looks I just can't get into even though others like them, or I want to stay with certain silhouettes. But, these look fine on you!

Play around with more stylings. For example, you think the pink top is slouchy, maybe because it has some folds in front kind of like a draping and it's a drapey fabric, but it's really not a true boxy top. It's too fitted through the hips. And probably too short for your height, with the pants. So you'll have better luck with a different top. Also it seems easier to style with a more tonal look (darker top but not black--cobalt, charcoal, deep reds) which is more forgiving of the proportions between top & pants, so you might feel more comfortable there and then add more options.

Carole, you are correct, I haven't posted any forum WIWs, Leiths or otherwise.

Also try these pants with a longer suit type jacket instead of the cropped or short jean jacket and different heel heights. Flats and heels both look good depending. Try one of your longer tunic tops/sweaters untucked, and try one of the drapey cowl neck tops you have as well, a little semi-tuck and the blazer on top look good on me -- I am trying to remember all those great tops you've posted. A simple untucked oversized Equipment silk type blouse also look really good I found with a heeled sandal or shoe.

I really found so much in my closet that worked with these pants.

I think unfrumped is onto something about slouchy versus boxy.

I have a slouchy shirt that I was sure was going to be awesome with them. YUCKOLA!!!

Boxy, drapey, tonal...I need to go dig in my closet!

I went to the YLF store and pulled a few pics of the types of tops I found worked well. Pic #2 similar drapey cowl neck type top looks great semi-tucked.

I think they look great on you! The zippers seem to help then to work with a wider ranger of inseams. I like to pair slouchy pants with a silky sort of top, lots of shapes can work.

I really like them too. What a fun silhouette to play with. The zippers really make them look so current. The taper is just perfect too--how I envy your long leg line!

Oh Carole, I SO hope you are keeping these trousers because the fit and style are perfect on you. I find them very flattering actually and love outfit 3 and 4 as is. Great styling suggestions from the other lasses too.

I also like the idea of a shorter, cropped sweater or sassy sweatshirt (boxy or regular fit) with a button-down shirt (untucked) underneath.

Or tops or jumpers with a bit more length, like so - maybe faux-tuck or semi-tuck in the front:

3 was my favorite of these looks too. For me I found that something a bit more structured on top works well with these - eg untucked but relatively short silk tank + cropped jacket.

Mine have to sit at the waist to be the right length, though, so this changes the proportions.

mtgrl-Thanks for the descriptive lesson on semi-tucking. I will have to try that and see what I can come up with.You could be on to something with regards to the coral color being too much of a contrast, and boxy versus slouchy makes sense. I don't have too many boxy choices because that's not something that usually flatters my broadshoulders and short waist. Thanks, also, for the link. It helps so much to have some visual examples of what is working for everyone.

Unfrumped-I really want to like these, and I do. Sometimes I am just a little slower than everyone else in adapting to trends and changes. They would work so well with my lifestyle, otherwise I probably wouldn't try so hard. They are a little challenging to style but you have given some excellent ideas. Thanks.

Claudia-It would be such a treat to see your outfits. Sounds like you have these mastered and you have given me some great ideas. Can't wait to give them another go.

Cinnamon Fern-I guess that's what's cool about these pants. Almost anyone can wear them, they can be sort of altered to work with different heights etc.You have given me another idea about a few tops I need to try with these...thanks for that!

Carole, they're such fun pants! I bought them too, just trying to decide which size to keep (but mine pool a LOT at the bottom, you lovely long legged lass you!). I think that you'd feel more comfortable in these, at least at first, with a more strict or structured top half. Like a button-up shirt, or a slim blouse with a blazer, something like that. A high-low hem sweater is also a good easy-to-wear option. I REALLY like the denim jacket with these pants on you, that definitely adds some of the structure I'm thinking of. Because the pants are so very sporty, adding something that's the opposite will have a really strong effect. I think your styling in #1-5 is spot on.

Carole, you look far better in these pants than you're giving yourself credit for! I don't mind the outfits you threw together, but I do think you'll find even better options if you experiment some more with the help of YLF input! Don't toss these pants aside quite yet ... I really think they look nice on you. I'm 5'10" and also ordered these in a large and you've given me hope that they might actually work for me. *fingers crossed*
