Looking for the Perfect Scarf

I'm putting together a travel wardrobe for a trip to Scotland in April. I want to be prepared for all types of weather and have purchased a vest, a fleece cardigan, a black raincoat, and waterproof low hikers which are shown below. My hat and gloves will be black. I will be limited to carryon for three weeks and am trying to pack minimally. My problem is finding a scarf that goes with my outerwear. I don't like itchy fabrics or infinity scarves and prefer a long, rectangle style. The Burberry scarf that Angie posted is my ideal but I don't want to pay that much. Under $100 would be fine. I've shopped online and found several scarves that may work but none of them seems ideal. Any suggestions would be welcome. (Also shown below is several possible scarves.)

Buy one there. I think Astrid bought a lovely scarf in Scotland. Of the ones pictured, I like the first and last the best, from what I can tell from the photos. I have seem cashmere-like scarves in Burberry plaids many places for a fraction of the price. They are made in Germany and are called Cashmink or something like that. Don't forget to look at men's scarves.

Thanks, Joy. I will check out the Cashmiracle scarves and I didn't even think to look at men's scarves. Buying a scarf in Scotland is also a good idea but I want to make sure I have something to wear when I first get there.

I really like the vibrant one with flowers. If your post about cardigans and pullovers is any indication, you look great in colourful clothing so this scarf should look good on you.

Other scarfs are nice as well, but as Joy said - you could look for scarfs of that type in Scotland. I imagine it's the best place in the world to look for plaid.

I've bought most of my scarves at thrift stores. Do you have any thrift stores in your area? I've found several cashmere scarves for about $5 each. The labels indicate they're from Scotland!

There's a Burberry scarf that would look great with my Pendleton coat, but it's over $400, so I'm passing on it, I'm afraid.

Have you checked Sierra Trading Post? They often have cashmere blend scarves, etc. at reasonable prices. Sometimes they stock Johnston's of Elgin -- a famous Scottish luxury brand ( I think that's what Astrid purchased when she visited Scotland?). I do like the idea of waiting and buying one once you're there -- then it doubles as a souvenir.

Sounds like a fabulous trip ahead for you. I like Joy's idea of planning to look for the perfect scarf while in Scotland, but bringing a suitable, less expensive one along with you. Here are some Burberry type scarves (some cashmere, some acrylic "cashmink" with cashmere feel) -- a few are from the men's department, but are unisex in look.

Alexandra: The first scarf pictured above is a Cashtouch from Land's End. It looks good in the photo, but it's so reasonable, on sale for $14.99, that I wondered if it would be warm and soft. Have you seen or tried them?
Tisha: The flowered scarf is really pretty. I was thinking of a plaid but as you and Joy said, I could buy that in Scotland. That way, I'd have two very different looks.

I followed Joy's suggestion and looked at men's scarves. Men have a lot more plaid and use the color brown more often. Here are some I found that I also like. I'm trying to find a scarf in a burgundy, black, brown, and white print or plaid.

I know most ppl don't like shopping at H&M because their quality is poor, but I am kind of hard on my scarves so I bought 4 from H&M this season. I have no doubt they will have plenty holes by end of the season!

They have some lovely blanket scarves that are worth checking out. I got a black one that looks amazingly cosy for traveling. I also got this one with a herringbone pattern.

Bonnie, I have one from years ago that I absolutely love. It's warm, soft, and bright red. The ones I've looked at in the store this year feel the same kind of soft and I'd expect the same performance from them. I actually had two in my hand to buy a few weeks ago but then decided that I needed a new jacket more than a new scarf.

Perhaps you could snag a post holiday sale on a Burberry, or at least we can all dream of that!

A few years ago, I bought the 100% cashmere "Travel Wrap" from White and Warren. Even on sale, it was really expensive for me, but I've worn it through several winters, and take it with me whenever I travel. It's super soft, and functions well as a wrap in cooler settings, and as pillow in airplanes and buses. It's been through the washer and dryer and hasn't pilled. When it rains, I just throw a layer on top of my head, and it keeps me dry.
