Looking for a mother of the groom online shopping spot

Dear Fabbers, my son is getting married in October. Attire will be evening/formal. I need advice on websites to do some dress shopping. I would like a dress that is modern classic and midi length. I have tried the usual places ( Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Talbots, even David Bridal). All is see is lace in navy or beige (both make me look like a cadaver). Thanks in advance for your help. I so value your input!

As a past MOB, I understand your frustration. I ditched all Wedding Party categories and simply looked for a dress. Formal or simple or long skirts...any thing...stay open to any dress category. Boden? Accessories such as shoes and jewelry can upgrade many options.

I agree with Canada—tell the search engine what you want, don’t let it tell you what you’re „supposed“ to wear. I think Nordy‘s lets you choose an impressive number of settings—length of skirt, sleeves, neckline, color, etc.

Do you want people here to help you look? What color do you want? Any features beyond lace and those colors to avoid, or any you particularly want?

You are very wise to start looking now. Prom dresses will be out now. Take a look at them. You might find a beautiful skirt that would do. Don't forget that alterations can be made but check with a tailor before your garment's return date.

Have you tried Dillards? My sister is getting married this fall and that's where my mom has had some luck!

There are other people here who are better at that than me, and some can be quite generous with it.

Have you tried Anthropologie and their offshoot, bhldn (or something like that)? You could also go to designers’ websites, if you have an idea of who you like.

Beige lace sounds dreadful and navy lace a bit depressing. Isn’t this one of those things where the color is supposed to coordinate with (and not match!) the bridesmaids and MOB? Any clues on the color scheme?

Donna F - yes you are correct. I will be talking to the MOB soon. No bridesmaids, so she and I just need to coordinate.

For my daughter's wedding last year, I found a beautiful dress at Anthropologie (yes, navy lace haha!) - and then rented the exact dress from Rent the Runway for a fraction of the purchase price. If you find something, take a look at RTR to see if it's available from them.

(And in any event, I would check Anthro. They carry a nice selection of fancy dresses.)

Viva-you must have looked beautiful in that navy dress. Navy is a neutral I wear but just not next to my face as it washes me out. Good point about renting. I will definitely look into that.

Also keep checking the sites you have already searched as new merchandise comes in over time, and you only need one outfit. And be open to items you weren’t considering.

Recent MOB here and I agree to leave such categories out of a dress search. I walked my feet off for days in Manhattan looking. If you have good retail near you, try lots on for silhouette and fabric preference as it will help you narrow an internet search if needed. There is such a range of quality out there and some materials don't stand up to a lower fabrication level. Mediocre lace is hard to pull off; while viva's dress reads elegant. Looking above one's price point can be helpful to see what you are aiming for at a lower price point; you have time to watch for sales. Some brands will feel more like you and a good SA might keep their eyes out for you as new merchandise comes in. All the best in your search.
