ETA what I want, Looking for a linen dress at the market & what I found

Plenty of Italien linen dresses, but none with a waist like I want. I’m looking for something just a half step dressier than this daisy dress.

The hat. I admire 20s fashion, but trying it on, I just don’t know…..

I wasn’t looking for a Velours top, but this one seems to have found me. It’s viscose and did not feel icky to my hand. I may go back for it, am undecided.

Ok, maybe that blue daisy linen dress isn’t what you are looking for, but WOW i love it on you…maybe its the color (which just seems fab with your coloring and even fabber with your hair), and maybe its the cut, maybe its the daisy’s (also been a favorite of mine, they strike me as approachable and friendly), but likely its the combination of all 3!

Thanks, Kkards and unfrumped! I want something to wear in an archive/research library when it’s hot & sticky out. Maybe Astrid, Roberta, or someone else who knows that territory will comment for me.
I’m surprised at how much more I like the dress in pix than in the mirror…

I understand something might not fit/ feel quite right when on, even if looks good in photo. Hence, I often have to say to myself, look for something almost like this BUT…
It might be a color, a fabric, a fit or style but somehow not all the parts are lined up or enough boxes ticked.

Wow, so much love for the blue daisy dress! Now I’ve got two questions:

Could I wear it in an academic-like setting?

Will it still be there next time?

I know you’ve spent a significant portion of your life in academia, so I’m sure you’re aware that norms for dress can vary. Every job I’ve had since I was 19 was in higher ed (spanning small liberal arts colleges and R1 research universities, on both coasts in the US) and with the exception of meeting with the president of my university or board of trustees, I think the dress is fine. It really comes down to your personal brand and whether you feel comfortable in it for the occasion. But, I can see this dress being fine for lecturing, working in the lab, faculty meetings, etc., especially in the summer.

And, I do think the color and cut are great on you!

I really like the dress on you. Good length, flattering color. Looks great with the sandals. Could add a light cardigan if it’s chilly indoors. Agree with Kathie, it is work appropriate for summer.

Very pretty daisy dress! Awesome color on you and unique print. Great fit too. I see a lot of folks downtown working in various government buildings and they are wearing sleeveless linen with patterns in professional settings.

Love the dress on you. Great shape and colour. Wow! Is that a blue you wear usually? Maybe you should seek that colour out (whether or not you buy the dress).

I like the velour top too.

Not sure about the hats. I don’t think they suit your hairstyle. In the 20s the reigning look was short bobbed hair.

That dress is lovely on you - looks lightweight & comfy too! Agree with @Kathie that academia tends to be a bit more relaxed (bar very important meetings) but it depends on the image you wish to project. I'd wear an open weave jumper, wrap cardigan or even a shawl over the top of the dress if you wanted to 'formalise' it a little without going for a full blazer getup.

With the hats, are the edges slightly wavy? Not sure if I'm reading the photos wrong, but it seems like your hair is sticking out on the sides from the edges, right? I'm no hat expert but personally I won't wear unlined cloth hats (like those ones) due to the static & frizz it creates

The velour looks great on you too! I find viscose/ rayon is the one synthetic I can tolerate in high heat (sometimes tencel too) but need to try it on first to be certain...

Another vote for the daisy dress. Colour shape and length really suit you - and the vibe. I like the velour top too - and I say pass on the hats.

Kathie, Madeline, Nikki, and Zaeobi, thanks for commenting on work appropriateness. I spent my life on campus until my early 40s, but it’s been a while and I’ve aged since then, so for the first time ever I’m uncertain about what to wear. (But in the end I am reassured that what matters is the work I do). Sleeveless linen is indeed what I was going for, but the Daisy print threw me.

Thanks Brooklyn! I noticed this color when this top, in a slightly less vibrant shade, broke my heart. It’s available in Austria, not in Germany or the US. https://www.intimissimi.com/at.....904IS.html There’s also a long-sleeved shirt in the pistachio green of my new shrunken polo. Sigh. Good point about the hats & my hair. I’ve nearly proven my point that I can grow it to my waist, now am probably going to get it chopped, but doubt I’ll go that short.

The “hats” are actually all one reversible hat, and a headband. I was surprised and a little disappointed that it didn’t really work.

Sal and Z, glad you like the velour. Am thinking of going back for it next weekend.

Sal, maybe I should’ve gotten the dress just for the vibe.

Is it odd that the WIW does strike me as campus appropriate, even though it’s a workout top?

I should’ve snatched it up. Went out looking for similar but unpatterned. This was the closest I found. Linen, yes, but not very close, really. I’m not a fan of the elasticized waist. They slide around & then hang in the wrong position.

I agree with you on elastic waists on dresses. I always find them uncomfortable. Definitely prefer the blue color on you, because it was so perfect with your eyes and hair. Also, I prefer more shoulder coverage (enough that I’m not fiddling with hiding bra straps) for work environments, if you are still thinking of something suitable for research.

Late to this, but did the daisy dress disappear? It’s really nice on you — a retro vibe but in a good way. The fit is great. I hope you’re able to get it. None of the other pieces do you justice, IMHO.

Janet, this was the last one in my size. I’m sure the seller is at other markets during the week, but I don’t know where to find her. I’ve just checked another weekly market that I like; don’t find her stand, or a similar linen dress. I will see if she still has it this Sat, but I’d be surprised if she does.

Thanks Star. For me, that dress would just be for hanging around. My minis with the workout tops & sometimes the bike shorts I got earlier this summer have been all i want to wear, so am refraining from the orange dress.

This pic is from 8 years ago, when I began losing weight. It was the kind of look I wanted to wear again, and is what I’m looking for now, in linen.
