Look What I found Today-Should I keep It?

Stumbled upon this Theory jacket on clearance at Nordstrom Rack...Keeping in mind I have a very casual life and would likely wear it mostly with jeans and perhaps black slacks or skinnies...it's sort of a heather grey color...what do you think? I have a black blazer I love but don't wear often, I almost think I would get more use from a lighter color jacket. Thoughts, lovely YLFabbers?

PS. I just threw this over what I had on today and realize the boots probably don't showcase the jacket very well.

I think it looks too wide for you, both in the shoulder and in the flare at the bottom? If it's fairly expensive I'd maybe say it's not worth it, because it's not an amazing fit and you don't know if it fits in your lifestyle. Wait for something amazing!

I like it! It's a more classic cut and I think it will look fabulous over the jeans. The grey is also very flattering on you Carole. Keep.

Interesting, Anne and Lyn, I would never have thought it too wide. I usually have trouble fitting the shoulders (I have very broad shoulders). Could it be the style of the jacket? hmmm ...even on clearance, it was expensive and I don't want to make a mistake.... Thanks for your honesty.

I can see what draws you to it. The color would be versatile and it has some good fit aspects. Somehow I think it's still off a bit in the cut and fit for you. Stance is too high maybe a it does seem to flare a bit. Seems like you need a leaner fit and maybe a lower 1- button closure if you are willing to keep looking out for "your" jacket.

I like the jacket, but then again it looks a little roomy and could be a little more fitted. But if you feel good in it, go for it.

I agree it is a little wide... not sure how fixable that is but it's worth trying to get it altered.
If you can return it, I vote do and keep looking, you have a great shape and I'm sure you will find something your size that you will find more exciting.

The fit is not a 10. The sleeves are a bit loosey goosey for my tastes. If you got it altered it might be a 10, but does not sound like it's worth the effort for your style goals.

Agree that the color is great but don't like the fit on you. I don't think it is worth altering since it was expensive. But the concept is great when you find the right jacket.

I think the sleeves are too short, too. It does fit great in the shoulders and bust though. If this came in a long/tall it might have been perfect and helped to drop the stance a bit, which I also think is just a little too high.

Claudia has probably hit the nail - it probably needs to be a tall.

Theory fits notoriously narrow and small, so the idea that it would be wide is peculiar.(Typically people need to size up in Theory, esp. if they have wide shoulders.) It is a good cut for people with smaller frames.

But if the proportions in length are wrong, that would make it look as if there were width where perhaps there ought not to be.

I really like it (in theory, ha ha) and don't see fit issues as extreme as others have been mentioning. I do think the sleeves are a touch short. What about styling it in a couple of different ways and trying again, Carole? I'm not ready to write it off yet, myself.

Thank you all so much for your "eyes". It's obvious to me now this is not a keeper.

Claudia and JJ, you point out some fit issues I didn't pickup on. I hadn't realized the sleeves were ill fitting, and I can see now that the stance is probably too high.

Suz- Pointing out that Theory runs narrow and small is helpful, I am NOT narrow and small so that explains a lot. I really don't "need" a jacket but would love to add another classic style to my wardrobe in a similar color when the right one comes along.

What would I do without your guys? I hope I never have to find out!

Carole, we have similar body types. We both need suit jackets with extra torso and sleeve length, but still fitted. I am 5' 8.5" with a strong shoulder line (34 DDDD bust and I think you are 34 DDD). So not only do we have longer torsos due to height, but a fuller bust also pulls the garment up higher than it would lay on someone with a smaller bust line.

I have had great luck in the past with Talbots "Kate" fit suit jackets, which is their most body conscious cut, in "long." The inch or two of extra length, but not added width, makes all the difference on the fit and drape. I'd give a very high recommendation to their seasonless wool suiting for quality and when they have sales, I think they are real steals for the money for a clean, classic jacket.

Claudia, THANK you so much for chiming back in and for the recommendation. We do have very similar body types, so nice to have a body buddy! I've never considered Talbots before but definitely will. I'm wondering if they carry the "long" in store or do you need to order? I have had good luck with Tahari in the past and passed one up at Marshall's earlier this year that I'm still sick over.

I have also had great luck with Tahari in the past (found at TJ Maxx when they use to carry suits)!

I've scoped the Talbots website for online sale deals and bought the jackets online. I have a local Talbots that I can make free returns to, but they are just a small store in the mall with very limited merchandise selection and I was unable to try on the "longs" before ordering, but lucked out when they arrived. I did try on their regular Kate fit for sizing though.

That's so helpful to know, Claudia. I'm anxious to have a look! It's interesting you have had good luck with a Tahari as well!

I'm wondering now if you have issues finding pants/jeans long enough...that's another problem for me. I'm a 34 inch inseam and usually find suitable lengths at Banana Republic and Gap, but that's about it!

My Theory jacket has no buttons and has a lower stance - the other ones I've tried are either too narrow in the shoulders or too "off" everywhere else. I love the idea of this on you, but the fit just doesn't seem perfect.

Yikes, I was just able to go to Talbots website and poke around and they have nothing right now compared to like they use to. I know the company was seeking a buyer and had fallen on hard times, which would explain the limited inventory of styles and fit options on their suiting. I think there is currently only one Kate fit offered in long, and it is VERY basic and plain. But keep them in mind, get on their email list for sale notices and keep checking -- you never know what each new season will bring at a retailer.

Tip on arm length fitting: when trying on a jacket hold your arms up and out and if the end of the sleeve comes past your wrist (above the bone) the jacket arms are too short.

Carole, I like at least a 34 inseam, ideally 35 or 36 for wearing a small heel. Pants off the rack are generally high waters on me and unless they have enough hem to be let down by a couple of inches, I have to pass.
