Men in long johns?

This gets a little personal, but can anyone comment on what men, including young men, in their lives have to say about long underwear? My son loves these new jammies, but has hilarious things to say in his rejection of long johns & the way they fit over his skin so closely. (No photo—see ad in link) I will return the compression version, but am undecided on these. I think he doesn’t know what’s coming and might be happy for them in a couple months, but I would not be happy to have them sit unused. Maybe I should get some cheapos from Otto for a quarter of the price. Then again, maybe the cheap ones wouldn’t feel good because they are cheap.

How about Uniqlo thermals?

Kofi Annan once mentioned in an Interview that one of the most valuable advice he ever got was to bring ear muffs to the US when he went there for the first time. He remarked that he couldn't see the value in it but once his ears almost froze his ears off he hurried to buy them. Since then I always imagine these ear muffs on his head whenever I see a picture of him. Can't help it. So it pays to be prepared

Anyways, regarding the question of where to buy - have you considered Uniqlo? There are now several stores around berlin and their Heattech stuff is Really great. There are several "warming levels" and styles available and it washes and holds up really well. Plus - it's less bulky than cotton stuff and layers well under shirts or trousers.
I don't like polyester clothing but this stuff feels really nice against the skin and they do have samples to try on in the store (it's usually sold packed).

Wellllll when I lived in Montreal my mother was forever trying to buy me long underwear, puffer vests, lined jeans.... Since I was walking 30 min to school and back I did have to figure out warm clothing and good boots with tread, but it wasn’t necessarily the items my mother thought were helpful, and it was definitely on my terms

Personally, I'd wait until it's actually cold, and then buy the stuff with him when he has a better feel for why and when he'd want to wear it.

In my experience (stepsons now 28 and 30), young men tend to be really particular about certain types of garments, and/or completely oblivious and just want to wear whatever is available. It’s so individual I wouldn’t attempt to anticipate someone else’s preferences!

My eldest stepson insisted he didn’t want anything extra to layer with when he lived in Boston for college...until he got into a Boston winter. He then welcomed the extra layering pieces we bought him. But he also worked as a bike courier and a mover, so lots of time outdoors. YMMV. He also turned his nose up at a lot of stuff until it was purchased on our dime. Admittedly, he was going through a hippie phase where he was convinced “the man” was trying to keep everyone down, but when “the man” (in the form of our credit card) got him into some nice-looking Lucky jeans and he could throw out the holey Goodwill pants he was wearing, he kinda forgot about how oppressed everyone was.

But I digress. The guys in my life seem to be down with long underwear if it’s cold enough to warrant an underlayer. It’s not for public viewing, after all! But if he’s really adamant, I say wait and see if he starts needing something more when the cold weather hits.

I have learned, with 3 teenage boys, to let them figure it out themselves. Since Uniqlo heat tech items are so inexpensive, I make sure everyone has a set that fits. They figure out when they need it (mostly for skiing). My motto is "It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it". (As long as it doesn't break the bank).

You all are wise and funny and very much in agreement with one another! There’s so much agreement that I can’t pull out individual pieces to respond to for each person, so thanks to all of you.
I will go ahead and return the Calidas, make sure he knows about the Uniqlos, and let him make the determination of what he needs, when.

Another vote for Heattech (for the both of you). Even my husband, who in many ways is as bad as a teenage boy, will wear Heattech if cold enough. The stuff they carry in the store is at least semi hip.

Uniqlo is an option of course, but I personally found wool always more comfortable, especially when you're also wearing them inside with heating. I would recommend the Icebreaker Oasis leggings, I've had mine since 2013 and wore them under my jeans most days during Berlin winters. They kept me reasonably comfortable standing on public transport platforms and were comfortable to wear inside my seminar rooms. They also have them for men and when you search for them online you find a few stores that often have mark downs (Amazon, Bergzeit, Bergfreunde etc).

Astrid, thanks! Offering him several options would be best. I’ve never heard of those, will look into them for myself.
Can you suggest other markdown websites? (My guess is that those 2 are hiking /camping related). I’m looking for a couple pairs of professional-looking pants right now, and about ready to break down and order from Nordstrom Rack, just because prices here are so high. I’d rather not do that, so appreciate your suggestions.

Vidly and Cee, I’m not sure if that’s a reason to go to Nova Scotia or to stay away. And women are so much stronger/warmer than men—look how bundled up they are, when all she needs is a little dress, lol.

Yes, you're right, they have camping/outdoor stuff. I've ordered from both and they are fine to buy from. For normal clothes on discount I shop a lot on Amazon actually, but mostly for brands I know fairly well or even specific items. Another big site with different brands and high mark downs is Zalando (https://m.zalando.de/damen-home/). I can't really tell you much else though, I mostly buy directly from brands or use Amazon.

I personally would try Peek& Cloppenburg at Kurfürstendamm for business pants. And I think it would be easier to try things on, especially pants which are hard to fit.

When you search online I would look for Comma and More and More when it comes to business clothes, maybe also Zero and Gerry Weber. All decent quality and affordable with discounts. I just bought myself a business skirt by Comma on discount for my next job interview...
