Long dress dilemma

Hello, it's me again - still struggling with Proper*Length (*insert dress, pants, skirt, any article of clothing here).

I wore an ankle length polka dot dress the other day, and I have several other dresses that are ankle length. Does the same "rule" for long skirts transfer to long dresses?

I'm not aware of a rule for long skirts. I thought a rule was to only wear long dresses and skirts as formal wear.
This outfit would look better to me if you showed some leg. You are all covered up in too much fabric, unless ofcourse you have a reason for it. Style wise I think the skirt would look beter up to your best knee length.

I have to agree with San here, you have lovely legs, such a shame to cover them up;-)
I really like the idea of a knee (or just under) length version of this polka dot dress (yeppp, who can resist polka dots;-), and it looks perfect with your fab red necklace!

I think that anything (skirt, dress, or pants) that cuts you off at the ankle is going to shorten you visually, and also tends to look dated. I'm with the other ladies- shorten the dress and it will look great.

I'm on team shorten! Some slinkier skirts can look very nice at a longer length but this is a little too full for that. I think it can be just below the knee, if you want to maintain more coverage, but with nice heels!

I agree with the other ladies. The outfit is nice but would be so much more flattering on you with the skirt of the dress ending around the knee area. You may find, however, that the shoes you wore will have too high a vamp to be the best choice with a shorter full skirt. They will be cute with pants or maybe a tailored pencil skirt.

I agree. I'm afraid the skirt is drowning you. I understand the appeal of long skirts, how about just a bit shorter to at least mid calf or right below the knee? I have nothing against long skirts in theory, it's just a proportion issue. Even a few inches would make a difference. Or how about trying a closer fitting top and heels to balance out the volume and length?

I love the colors in this outfit, the warm red is very pretty with your skintone!

Yes! Lets see those pretty gams! You might like to taper the dress on the sides when it's shortened as it will alter the shape.

You look really nice in red, and I love black and red together. But the dress needs to be shorter, I agree--just below the knees or right at the knee (or even just above it!). Black shoes would be nice--something with a little heel and that shows a little more of your foot--or a strappy sandal.
Consider a chunky silver bracelet or metallic bag, perhaps?

Cathy, I don't think long skirts (and I mean mid-calf and not ankle length) work on anyone unless they have LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of funky detailing. They look dated, dowdy and unflattering otherwise. But Audi wears her edgy long skirts with multiple petticoats really well, in her usual OTT way. That's the way to do it in my book.
