Long Cardigan for Autumn

Hi Ladies:)

I mentioned the other day how much I love the Eileen Fisher aesthetic and today I tried this gorgeous long cardigan that reminds me of the EF look.

I was looking for a long cardigan last year and did find a simple black one which I will enjoy again this year but this one is just lovely. It's a knit at the front and sleeves and the back is jersey. The colour is slate blue.

Pic is just me trying it on in the store with what I was wearing today.

It will work well I think with whites and greys but how do you think it will work with black?

The top in #4 looks great under the cardi. But it's not the best colour for me. I could wear a black Cami under the slate top separating the slate from my face a little. Or I could layer a slate Cami (only a touch of slate showing to tie in with the cardi) under the black top in #6 (which I already own). The slate blue of the knit is different to the top and is a much more flattering a tone than the top. It's a subtle difference but ...

Anyway, what do you think? I'm giving myself a few days to mull it over:)

So beautiful Deborah!! Love that color on you and would not have thought to mix it with the taupe but works brilliantly. I actually think it will be great with black. I have a EF long cardigan which I have not done much with. Super ideas. Love it with the skirt and how the hem dips to the length. Just uber chic!!

Do you love the colour by itself for you? I think it is stunning beautiful on you Deborah but I am a little concerned it could be orphaned.

Thanks Gryffin! I had to restrain myself and not bring it home today lol. I think will pick it up Thursday:). It's on hold for me. Just need to decide between the two slates tops. The oversized one really looks good and creates a lovely tonal look hmmm. So is your cardigan black?? Wouldn't it look good with your skirted leggings??

R&J good point. I do love it! And I think I have enough white, navy and grey (and black) to get plenty of wear out of it;). And it's a neutral so much easier to incorporate into my wardrobe than a "colour" if that makes sense??

Oh, but came back to say, a print will also do for tying in with your blacks. In fact I do have a cascade cardi in the same color scheme that i did struggle to style exactly for the same reason, you are wondering yours, too. I did buy it for the great texture(slub) and quirky combo of fabrics (knit body with doubled chiffon cascade lapels but only recently styled it successfully with a graphic printed mix-media top, which has a greyish silky body with a print which contains both some of the blues of the cardi and some blacks to which I aim to match with(not only in the print, but some faux leather insets on the shoulders).

Picties were taken in the dressing room-so please excuse the shiny black underskirt (done just to be able to imagine it all to my blacks) or my not matchy boucle skirt in nr. 2, which was part of my outfit that day:-)

It looks great on you! Definitely keep since it sounds like you have plenty to pair it with. In addition to colours, you might want to consider the fabrics you will wear under it. I have found that lighter weight jersey-knit long cardis can get a bit 'grabby' when worn over some fabrics, such as other jersey items, especially if the items underneath are loose fitting. Mind you, I have a proportionally bigger bum, so that could be my problem!

I like it very much, even with what you are wearing, and think it would look wonderful with black. The slate is a neutral like denim and similar to faded denim color. It is worth playing with. Is it the Motto brand? If it becomes available in black or grey, will you wish you had waited?

No opinion about the tops but the cardigan is gorgeous, you must get it. Assume its Motto....?

I actually quite like the colour for you - and the idea of layering it over the tonal looser-fit top. The only thing niggling at me is the two-textured concept of the cardigan. A plain jersey back on a knitted or patterned front and sleeve is something I"ve never liked -takes away from the sophistication of the piece.

Lovely, and I think it would work in all the options.
#4 would be great with one of your necklaces breaking up the 'not your best' colour concerns, as would the softer knit section of the cardi anyway.

Yes Deborah - of course my long cardigan is black!! But I had not thought to wear it long over a long dress. I don't have a maxi dress but I do have a sleeveless vince midi knit shift to try. I think I don't wear this as much as I thought because sweater is light so when you move it's almost like being a princess with a train (I know what could be more perfect for the princess of darkness!! ) but it's a little distracting when I am racing around. I've worn it with tunic and leggings. I have to see how the skirted leggings (short skirt with leggings with long looks to my eye), also with ankle jeans. My sweater is very light so more summer, late spring, early fall. Too light for winter here. When we talk sweaters we mean could double for small knitted outdoor emergency structures!!

Lyn67 your outfit looks fabulous. Thanks for sharing. I love the idea of a print top like yours with the cardigan. I am going to keep an eye out for something like that with a soft abstract pattern.

Aliona I agree but the jersey back is a quality and weighty jersey so it drapes beautifully.

Joy, excellent question and I did consider that:) But I am pretty sure I will be happy with the blue. I already have a long black edge to edge cardigan that I am pretty happy with. IF the cardi does become available in black I could still potentially have both in my wardrobe. It's better quality than the one I have now.

Lisa I hear you:) Funny thing is for me I feel the jersey back 'dresses' it up. The quality of the jersey is fantastic and overall there is a real quality to the piece.

Lyn D Thank you! Yes of course, I wasn't thinking of jewelry but that is definitely another way to deflect the slate at the neckline. I am very inclined to buy the oversized top in the slate because the two pieces look so good together.

Gryffin, your cardigan is stunning! Mine is very similar but not as nice:)
Do you have a slim midi skirt that you could wear yours over. Worn with boots??? The skirted legging skirt might be too short for this? I love how the EF models wear this look. And I love the drama of the 'princess train' , that is one of the cardigan's appealing qualities This blue cardigan is very light also. Not really designed for warmth but will work Spring/Autumn and indoors for Winter.

This is a lovely addition to your wardrobe. If slate is not a favourite colour, I would buy the cami. Cami's a great way to get colour incorporated into an outfit without it being overwhelming. In addition, if you do find a good printed top, the cami will work well with that (independent of the cardigan) and give you some more layering options.
