This is embarrassing, but when I signed up for LinkedIn, it had an option where you can send invitations out to contacts in your address book. I specified very carefully that no, I didn't want it to do that. Within the last week I've learned that it did so anyway, which is super annoying! Since I've had private email contact with some of you, if you received an invite and don't use the site, please feel welcome to disregard/ignore; I promise I won't be offended.

(And if you do use the site and want to connect, by all means feel welcome to do so!)

I did the same thing about 2 years ago. While some people who barely know me might have wondered why the heck I was trying to connect with them, I've since received a few surprising invites myself (so I think people are understanding about this).

No worries Kari, I did actually join after I received your invite (DH is on it) but I don't really know what it's for lol. Having said that I received an invite from someone I didn't know last night.

I've received a lot of invites from people I don't know, which isn't the way LinkedIn is supposed to work. Most of them seem to be recruiters. I always ignore the invites from people I don't know, and sometimes will ignore the people I *do* know if I can't recommend them in good conscience. Luckily, there's only been a couple of those.

In any case, I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like this has happened to a lot of people, so most folks will understand. It's happened to me, before, just not with LinkedIn.

Linkedin is the only social net I actually don't mind 'befriending' people I don't know. I wouldn't do that on FB (although I know MANY people who do), but I like following other people's professional profiles, especially if they have something to do with what I do (or used to do, heh). Just yesterday, checking a girl's updated profile encouraged me to keep looking for jobs AND gave me some ideas as to where to look for.

Isn't linkedin supposed to work like that?

A recruiter made me get on LinkedIn. I think it's fine for finding jobs/recruits. I find the recommendation aspect entirely suspect. People collect connections on LinkedIn exactly the way they do on Facebook.

I think that you can follow someone's blog without adding them as a contact. At least you can add the "influencer" blogs that way. I have no clue what it takes to be an "influencer".

Early on, at least, they emphasized that you shouldn't add anyone you didn't know, and after clicking on the warning they supposedly told you why. I think the plan was for LinkedIn to be a way to recommend co-workers, former co-workers, clients, etc. to other people that you had done business with, and to facilitate business related introductions. It's likely that as it has shifted to being more of a social network and a bit less of a business network, the owners may have decided to back off on that.

I have added friends whom I know are respected and valued at whatever they did for a living, and a few co-workers whom I haven't worked with directly, but whom I know do a good job. So I don't always have first hand knowledge of how well they may perform their jobs. But I've avoided adding anyone whom I thought would be a disaster in some way.

Irene, it's funny that I'm the opposite from you re: who I'll add to my networks. I've added people I barely know on Facebook, but I always give it some thought before I add them on LinkedIn.
