I'm loving that this is a trend right now as hipster lace up sneakers have been my go to shoes for years, the kind of brands carried in this nearby shoecandy store: http://theshoestorepdx.com/
So some of the brands that are popular among this group are the retro or classic styles of New Balance, Onitsuka Tigers, Saucony, Adidas, Puma, Reebok and Gola for example. They are lace up, often bright colors (if you aren't doing a pure white Adidas for example), but a sleeker fit.
Personally slip on doesn't fit me as well, although I keep trying them on just to see. I think they can work really well as a part of certain outfits, often a more subtle part.
I prefer the detail and cheekiness of lace up sneakers (and the comfort) for outfits where I want to the shoes to shine. I think classic neutral colors can work well, but also retro combinations of brights are fun.
I added a lot of examples, but really there is every color under the sun. I don't think matching is necessarily the goal when wearing them.
ETA: I'm personally conflicted about wearing Nike. I think I could picture people wearing them for fashion, but not to be hip (if that makes sense). It might be because they are based where I live and sort of still considered 'the man', in other words mainstream but not classic or retro. It's so silly I know, feel free to disregard my rambling.
