Nothing. Stop torturing those of us up north . Leaves are not even fully out on trees yet! Lilacs are among my favourite bushes - love the aroma.

You have so much blooming, JAileen! Our lilacs all died in the freeze last week, so I only have vinca, tulips, and phlox right now.

However, I just can't resist this call, because in my work life, I'm a paper florist. Here's what's "blooming" inside my house.

Our yard is too shady for many spring blooms, but the woodland phlox I planted last spring smells amazing.

Lisa, I'm sorry. At least you have something to look forward to. The lilacs were a volunteer in the backyard that my husband transplanted. They must have liked our super wet winter because I've never seen them so loaded with blooms.

Jenn, I was fooled at first. Your artwork is so beautiful! Wow! I'm sorry your lilacs were killed by frost.

Delurked, I love bougainvillea. So so pretty. We can't grow it here, unfortunately. Do you eat the kumquats? What do they taste like?

Meredith, your phlox is lovely. I wish our yard had a little more shade. It's all sun, all the time. Sounds good, but can be torture in July.

Wow, Jenn! Those are amazing. DDIL would have loved #3 for her bridal bouquet. The wedding had a bookish theme.I am sorry that your lilacs did not make it through the freeze. many were already blooming here and our Korean Lilacs in bud are blooming now. Our grape vines did not make it though.

A sampling of the flowers in my front garden, now. They are: #1, Ajuga reptans "Mahogany"; #2, Allium "Purple Sensation" in front of Sweet Woodruff (marauding everywhere); #3, The greater garden area with allium, sweet woodruff, and Geranium phaeum "Samobor"; #4, On the other side of our entry path with Ajuga genevensis, Ajuga reptans "Mahogany", purple foliage contributed by Salvia lyrata "Purple Volcano", and Geum "Banana Daiquiri".

The Cat, wow! Snow in May! How do the tulips do in the snow? Are they okay or does it kill them?

Last week was relatively warm here. On Saturday we actually enjoyed around 20 C (68 F), which is characterized as summer temperature in Scandinavia. Though this week has been cooler, it was indeed a surprise to wake up to snow and only 2 C (35 F) this morning!

By now (early evening), the snow has disappeared, and the tulips are looking OK. It seems that tulips and several other flowers are able to survive snow. Frost, however, can be worse ...

The Cat, I'm glad your tulips survived! When we lived in the mountains, we had violas (Johnny Jump ups) flowering in the snow. They seemed to do okay. Our neighborhood was called the 'Banana Belt' because we got less snow than other neighborhoods, but we got lower temperatures. Nearby they measured -45F once. Too cold for me!

Sadly I don't have a garden right now because I live in an apartment building, but my orchid plant is blooming! Other pics are various things in my neighborhood. (I liked the pattern mixing in #4!)

Diana, your orchid is beautiful. Pattern mixing! Is 3 a dogwood? I think we're a little ahead of you too. Our crabapples were blooming a week or two ago.

JAileen, I'm lucky to be living about 20 minutes away from Butchart Gardens. It's an amazing place to go in every season. And Victoria is lovely in the spring. Here's a picture from a few weeks ago when all the cherry trees were in bloom:

Yes, that is a dogwood. They are all over my neighborhood at the moment and are some of my favorite trees. The last photo I posted is actually of a white one and a pink one next to each other.

I thought your last picture was of flowering fruit trees. We drove the Blue Ridge Parkway once and the dogwoods were in bloom. It was a gorgeous drive. I don't think they grow around here.

Do you know, before I moved to the east coast I thought dogwoods were a South-only thing, but apparently they are native to the entire east coast. But they seem to not grow at all in the western half of the US.

They grow in Canada but not in Minnesota. That's very odd. I wonder why that is?

Dogwoods are actually pretty common in many areas of Canada and Europe as well as throughout the States. The red osier dogwood is often planted as a windbreak on Prairie farms in Canada. The Pacific dogwood is the provincial flower of British Columbia.

You are right that the Cornus florida dogwood isn't found in the western half of the States, but a dwarf variety of dogwood is found in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. It's a pretty versatile species.

So right you are, Gaylene. I'm looking at my Audubon guide to NA Trees and the Pacific dogwood's range is the Pacific coast from British Columbia to mid California, or so. I live inland, and they aren't here. In fact, I think we only have one native tree, a Cottonwood. But I grew up north of San Francisco, and that would have been part of its range. Diana is from Southern California, I think, and it doesn't look like its range goes that far south.
