Let's say I was going to a wedding...

In New Orleans. On St. Patrick's Day. The bride is Jewish, the groom (my cousin) is Indian. The reception is at night at a fancy hotel. I need to look like a knockout - like Rita's family, my relatives are outspoken, critical and sharp-tongued. Would this dress be a possibility? And in what color? The model has shoulders like me.

I'd like to wear Indian clothes but I think it's going to be Western wear for the most part.

I LOVE the first dress you posted. That would be my choice for western wear if I were in your shoes. I like the raisin but you should order both and keep whichever color makes your skin glow. The dress embellishment is a nice tip of the hat to Indian "work" and makes it glamorous. It would look fabulous worn with dangly crystal (or diamond!) earrings and a bracelet. I'm assuming you're going for polished here and not RATE.

However if you do want to wear Indian clothes, you should go for it, because there are so few occasions when they get put to good use. Your cousin is Indian, therefore it's at least partially an Indian wedding and Indian clothes are appropriate. IMHO a beautifully draped silk sari is as elegant as any ball gown and has the advantage of being unique.

Both dresses are gorgeous. I am personally more partial to the second one (that has sold out in your size). Is there any chance of finding it elsewhere? The other dress is lovely too but I am not that keen on the embellishment on the dress. Having said that, I think the ink would be quite stunning on you. I particularly like the second dress as it has the lovely glamorous drape and is very classy and elegant look.

Did you have a look at MaggyLondon.com? There were some other beautiful dresses on the website that would be lovely for the wedding. Oh and I forgot to say why not wear what you want to wear. If you want to wear Indian clothes I agree with Sylvie that a beautiful silk sari would be just so stunning and elegant.

They are both beautiful, but I think you would look gorgeous in the first dress. I agree that you should probably try both colors to find the most flattering, but I do think the ink has a leg up on the burgundy.

Both lovely! The first has a lovely shape but I'm not feeling all those jewels on the neckline.
The second one is more modern, more trendy! Love it!

I was viscerally drawn to the first dress, which is gorgeous and would look amazing on you, but will it be easy to hem if need be?

I am not too keen on the floral embellisment either. I think the color is fantastic. I like the black dress, although I think you would look smashing in color.

AG: I remember once Angie saying she would love to put you in an Adriana Papell dress. I really like dress one but on first look the emebllishment looks a little jarring but then it makes me think of the possibility that you could wear kundan earrings with it!
Dress 2 is universally flaterring silhouette and the style happens to be very popular in Mumbai currently ( my cousin is a mumbai based clothing designer).

What is stopping you from wearing Indian clothes? I think that would be the way to go -make a statement in a knockout sari or salwar kameez. Gee, hope I got that right. I love Indian dress but don't know the terminology.

Dress 2 is my favorite if you can find your size. A sari would be gorgeous if you dont feel like following the crowd.

I want to go to this wedding! Your family sounds fun! I would love to see you in color. That would be a nod to your Indian family while wearing western clothing. I have seen the first dress irl and it is not that exciting. I think the second dress has a lot of potential, does it come in a color?

I love the colors (especially the ink) of the first, but not the built in jewelry. Love the 2nd dress if it came in the ink or something more interesting.

See, I think the first dress would look tacky on me, but exotic and beautiful on you. With your edgy haircut and some black strappy cage heels it could look awesome! You'd have to try it on to know for sure. I'm guessing you and your family will come to a consensus on whether to go Indian or western? Or that your cousin will dictate this? This will be one interesting wedding: Jewish bride, Indian groom, Catholic town on a saint's feast day--I wonder when Mardi Gras falls this year?

If you have time, I would go to a store. Trying to shop for formalwear online is a total shot in the dark. You never know what is going to look good on you.

I'd wear a sari, if that's what you'd like to wear. Half the guests will be Indian, right? Have you talked to your brother about what expectations are?

Is your head swimming yet Una? I love the colour of the first dress but am "iffy" on the embellishment. The black dress is a gorgeous silhouette and would look lovely on you, but like others, I adore you in colour.

You want to be comfortable and feel like "you" so if you want to dress in Indian dress, I say go for it! Saris are sooooooo beautiful.

If however you don't want to go that route, I do love the dress that Rita posted - it would be a stunning colour on you.

And you WILL be a knock-out, no matter which you choose.

The first dress is really pretty and I think it COULD work on you, but I wonder if it would feel too conventionally feminine/ not strongly dramatic enough? That is why some of these other suggestions are positive.

What does Angie suggest for ITs in terms of neckline/ sleeve style? Is strapless/ one shoulder a good idea? I do like the idea of some asymmetry in your look for the event to echo your hair.

I agree with Rute, that the jeweled neckline turns me off on the first dress.

I like the second, too, but I also agree with Rita that I'd love to see you in a dramatic color!

OK, I prefer the cut of the second dress but the colors of the first. Maybe I am a prude and of course it depends on the particular wedding, but I honestly feel that the first dress is too bare and body-con for a wedding, and, like the other ladies, I'm not feeling the embellishment either.

My reaction to dress1 was "wow!". Dress 2 is gorgeous, too, and did you notice that the reviews recommend sizing up? That being the case, would the size 8 fit you?

Thank you all for the comments! I thought the embellishment was a nod to Indian blinginess, but I can see how it's not everyone's cup of tea. The other dress is not available in my size, though I can check with Nordstrom.

Heather, you have an unbelievable memory. I'm afraid the orange dress is not formal enough. I wore it to a wedding here and will be wearing it to another wedding in Hawai'i. I didn't realize this NOLA event was so formal (and there's no real wedding ceremony, since they are already married, just a reception!).

As for Indian clothes, the main issue for me is that fashions change so fast and my outfits are all five years out of date! I could just go with a sari, but it's a mixed crowd and I know the "young" generation will be dressed in cocktail outfits -I don't want to feel like one of the aunties quite yet. Sona, Sylvie, anyone else - what are your thoughts on that?

My sister and I are conferring... not to mention that she finds out today whether her film got nominated for an Oscar, in which case I'm crashing that too!
