Okay, so I am going to be wearing a black dress that is a couple of inches above my knees later this month. A) I hate my knees/thighs, and B) I'm always cold. At 36 I feel too young for beige nylons. But I feel like opaque rights will make me look like I am going to a funeral. What are acceptable legwear options? I have no idea what is "in" right now with regard to tights, nylons, hose, etc. Help!

PS This is a bad picture, and also I am not wearing it with that belt. I am wearing a skinny fake-snake belt with a dark metal clasp.

Interested in what answers you receive. I'm looking a similar situation and thinking light opaque tights or semi sheer black or charcoal hose. Not sure those are particularly stylish options but I'd freeze without them!

First of all, there is nothing wrong with your knees or your thighs. I think we tend to be much more critical of ourselves than others are of us. In terms of what to wear, I think semi sheer hose would be great. I might have suggested fishnets but you said you get cold. Maybe something with an interesting pattern? I like solids with a pattern in either opaque tights or semi sheer hose.

Mini fishnets are pretty warm. I am wearing sheer black or off black stockings. For warmth, try wearing the sheer black or black micro fishnets over sheer nude pantyhose. Black or dark footwear will look best.

I love your legs and I think you can totally pull it off without legwear. But if you're self conscious I'd avoid nude and black and go for something fun like a plaid pattern or a shimmery gold opaque tights.

I agree with the choice of microfishnets (they are available in nude too, if you don't want black) or else some kind of patterned tight. Nordstrom has a lot of patterned tights, if I recall.

If you wanted to try nude hose, you could try a glossy pair that have a sheen to them. I know that nude hose can feel dated, but perhaps a glossy pair would do the trick. I bought a pair from Nordstrom, although I haven't worn them yet. I'm still trying to make up my mind about what I think of them.

Semi-sheer black hose go with absolutely anything and as shown above you can get all kinds of lace or fishnet patterns too. So long as the skirt is plain enough, they'll go!

And, Nude IS making a comeback - albeit a rather quiet one, since they're, well nude and not the most visible. Shiny I'd think would work on your leg shape.

I'm personally a champion of otk socks, which with knee length skirts just look like leggings until you sit down, and which come in all sorts of shapes, colours, patterns, thicknesses but some people have trouble keeping them up or think they're too sexy for everyday wear.

I think sheer black hosiery would be beautiful if you're going for a dressy outfit. I think patterned hose would be lovely but not as dressy; opaque would be nice as well - dark, yes, but I disagree that it would look "funeral"...but then, I've always felt that all-dark outfits are chic (I personally rarely wear back near my face so for me it would be all navy or all charcoal).

ETA - sheer nude would be lovely as well, if you do not feel too bare in them. Match your leg tone and you can't go wrong. too dark will look dated and matronly.

I like Joy's idea of sheer black hose over nude hose to stay warmer, I'm going to steal that Generally in the styling in magazines I see that involves winter outfits and not bare legs sheer black hose seems to be everywhere.

I wear black or navy or charcoal opaque hose over another pair of tights if it's cold and generally just do a column of color look on the bottom, it usually is unobtrustive and lengthening, I don't think of it as funeral especially with a bright or light jacket or coat.

I was really into patterned tights briefly but found them frustrating because they are very non-minimalist and more casual and you kind of have to plan the whole outfit around them. I think they are more versatile if it's just a texture thing rather than a very noticeable pattern.

Thanks for all the advice! I am thinking sheer black might be the right choice for me (I am more of a classic type of dresser). I do like the idea of a texture but only if it was some think kinda subtle.
