Leggings in colors other than black

Ladies, with warmer weather coming and lighter colored clothing, I'm considering cropped leggings in other colors. Your thoughts? I need to keep in mind that I am over 40, so I don't want the dreaded MDAL.

I took a peek at your profile page and given your age, I would say no. But, what colors were you thinking? Possibly light grey and other very muted neutrals, but colors... probably not.

I'm on the fence here too. I think you need to have really good legs to do colored tights since the color draws the eye.

I think Angie usually recommends just black leggings for all ages, though I'm a bit of a rebel and have navy and grey pairs too x

Thanks, ladies. I guess my purpose is to wear them under shortish summer dresses that I don't wear any more. My concern is that black would look too harsh. I'll go play in my closet with the calf length black ones I've got.

Lynne- repeat black somewhere in the upper half of your outfit (black necklace, belt, flower pin, etc) to help balance it out and you should be ok.

lynne, I see a lot of women wearing white with taupe or grey leggings - I like the low contrast look and I'm tempted to try it. Like you, I worry that black is too high contrast, and it's actually difficult for me to repeat black in my outfits. I own very little black, it's not a colour I'm drawn to at all.

So far I've only worn black leggings, and you can repeat a dark color on top such as navy if you can't repeat with black. I know Angie is a purest about black leggings, but I have seem some grey leggings on women recently that I thought actually looked pretty nice.

I find black kind of harsh looking with light, airy, summer dresses so I'd be interested in trying out the taupe as an alternative. Even though I am in that over 40 range . . .

I am really influenced by my climate--our dominant season is sweltering--and black almost anything looks weird to me in the spring/summer. Black sandals, black leggings, black cars. . . they all look hot! If I see someone in black leggings this time of year, I assume she's going to/from yoga class and didn't have time to change.

If I lived somewhere cooler, the black leggings might look better to me.

I think any neutral darker color would work (like above): grey, navy, taupe, chocolate or plum. I have seen these all look good on older women, and I'm currently searching for some "colors" myself (especially slate grey).

'Not black' doesn't have to mean bright pinks and yellows. If you really just want them for under summer dresses - why not a very light brown, cream, or taupe? Nothing that attracts attention, just something the eye can glance over easily, so the attention stays on the dress.

MDAL = Mutton dressed as lamb. I love my black leggings, but in my climate black reads "hot" to my eye, especially with the high contrast of lighter weight and color fabrics. I'll check out some other neutrals, thanks!

I have one pair of black, one pair of gray, and two pairs of brown. They're all kinda dark, but add some versatility since I don't wear a lot of black.

I've got black, chocolate brown, charcoal, light gray heathered, and white though I'm not over 40. I wear the black and charcoal the MOST. Mo, add me to the list of those on the hunt for taupe now!

I have black, brown for my brown dresses, and denim-fabric leggings (not jeggings, these are just leggings with no pockets or anything) for navy dresses.

I've been wondering this too. I think I'd like a navy pair as well. There are times where you want leggings, and not jeggings. I think any dark neutral would work well actually. I don't like the look of white leggings though (then again most white freaks me out anyway!)
