Leather Jacket - Keep or not?

So I've been wanting a moto leather jacket for about 2 years and I think I finally found one at Lucky Brand, but I think it might be too big. It fits fine around my waist but might be a bit roomy in the chest/armpit area.

The shoulder droops a bit which kind of bothers me and the store didn't have a small to try. I ended up buying it thinking I may layer up but now I feel like it might stretch out. Should I purchase the smaller size for fear it might not zip up (due to my wide hips and tummy)?

The burgundy jacket is my own. You see the fit difference.

CGDC, in my experience of asking YLF for fit advice on leather jackets (and I have done it MANY times over the years), the consensus is virtually always, "Get the smaller one."

Probably because the snug, cheeky fit looks way better in photos, even though it may feel a bit like, "How am I supposed to fit a sweater under here?" or "Am I going to rip the shoulder seams if I cross my arms?"

You may have to decide if you're after a moto for warmth and practicality or for sheer style.

I think your burgundy fits you better. To my mind not smaller, problem is in a model with little wider shoulder I think it wouldn't be good in the waist.

The black looks too big (I say in typical YLF style ;-)). The shoulders bother me too.

I've heard on this forum that you don't have to worry about being able to zip it up if you don't plan to wear it that way.

The burgundy does fit wonderfully.

I think the black one looks too big. I would try the smaller size for comparison. I like the fit of your current burgundy jacket.

It does look a bit big on you but more importantly, you don't feel comfortable with the fit. I'd be fine with a looser fit but you clearly want a more fitted jacket. Could the store order you a small to try on? Or would the the shipping/return costs be too high for you to order a small for comparison?

It's maddening when things don't fit the way you think they should.

Ditto Janet and Angie. Re: the YLF opinion on Motos - I think for me I would want a Moto to look good. I have other jacket that I can wear for warmth.

It's a cool jacket, but I think you should go with your gut and find a smaller one. The burgundy one looks gorgeous, and fits properly. I'd wait until you can find a better fit -- leather jackets aren't cheap!

I have the exact same jacket from last year in a grey/green color. Mine did not stretch out much. That said, I rarely wear it closed and think you could size down.

Lastly, I got mine for 50% off on Black Friday weekend last year, so you could always just order it online for cheaper then.

Thanks ladies. There's another jacket I've been wanting to try by Madewell which also at Nordstrom but am wondering if they will ever go on sale. I like this style better without the epaulettes but at $498, it's a bit pricey.

You are smart to hold out for a better fit. Leather jackets are special pieces and it is worth the wait for the right one to come along.

BTW, I am not saying that YLF is wrong about this, and Style Fan makes a good point -- there are other jackets you can toss on over bulky items for warmth. A moto should look good on its own, and therefore it makes sense to go for the snug, cheeky fit.

In my climate, however, it sadly turns out that this gives my beloved leathers about two weeks of wearability in the fall and two more in the spring.

April does have a point. I think it comes down to whether this piece is intended to be used mainly as outerwear or as a fashionable topper (for indoor events and transitional weather).

I couldn't see the picture at all...tiny! I question Madewell's quality. What I've looked at seems a little "jr." and the fabrics like wool are so rough and scratchy. $498 sounds high for the brand.
