Leather blazer on eBay: how to know if something is dated?

I came across this Petite Sophisticate blazer today:

I was thinking that a leather blazer might fill a hole in my wardrobe, but I doubt I can find one new that I can afford. Is there any way to tell if an older piece like this will still look current? Is it possible to judge the shape and fit from a photo like this? Maybe the stitching automatically dates it so it's a non-issue... I just don't know. Thoughts?

This doesn't look dated to me at all. I like the stitching detail and the neutral color. It is hard to judge from the photo, but the leather seems to be in good condition as well.

This looks like a really nice jacket to me - well proportioned lapels, princess seaming in the back, and I think the stitching adds to the overall look. I wonder how many buttons there are? Maybe they would send you a pic without the arms crossed so that you could see the front properly.

I like it! I would also advise asking for a pic with the arms uncrossed, just to check out the front.

I like it! Love the gray. It would be nice to see it on a mannequin just to get a better idea of the lines.

I thought that too, Meredith. I decided I should also ask for at least the across-the-back measurement, since when Petite Sophisticate was around I don't think I was ever an 8. I may be overly optimistic that this would fit.

Not sure... could be tricky. The good thing is that it is not a big commitment if it doesn't work out. I'd love to see something a little more current...

Well, I'm bummed. The seller is away and can't provide any measurements or photos. I don't think I'm going to risk it... I am torn though. I don't think I would find a leather blazer anywhere for that sort of price. Time to hit the thrift stores?

Don't know about dated but be careful of quality and condition - I got a leather item off ebay that was unused vintage, and the seller failed to note that it was super-stiff and dry from lack of wear. Be sure to ask about that!

Looks like the bidding ended, so I guess it wasn't you. I would also wonder if 8P is what its original tag says, meaning an 8P back in the day, such that it is today's 6P or even 4P. How long has Petite Sophisticate been gone? I don't remember seeing it around for quite a few years.

Nope, I didn't get it. By the time I went back to look at it again the bidding had already ended. I definitely was concerned about the size - I think it's been 8 to 10 years since Casual Corner/Petite Sophisticate disappeared. So without a measurement I wasn't going to go ahead.

I've decided I really want a gray jacket - I ordered one from lastcall.com and we'll see how it looks. (Plus there were a couple taupe twill ones that hopped into my cart...) But I think leather is going to be something that I will have to luck into, or save up for!
