Layering with Button down shirts..how ?

I want to try using a button down shirt as a layer. I saw it on Sveta the other day and really liked it.

In the past when I have tried it, there seemed to be a lot of friction with the top layer and the shirt moves around. So how does one do this ? Should I put a silky camisole over the button down, do I tuck the button down into tights or a shaper ?

And kind of on that note, I have been wearing tunics/dresses with skinnies, but I get terrible static cling. ( It has been very cold here..maybe that is the reason ). Does that happen to you ? I have started wearing a short slip, it adds to the warmth , too, but am I missing something ?

When I have static I rub a dryer sheet over the clothing, which seems to help.

Can't really help with the button-down issue. Whenever I wear them under something I feel like you can see the shape of the buttons through the top layer, so I avoid layering with button-downs.

I really struggle with layers and tucking -- I do it, but my heart isn't into it -- but I love it on others and continue to try liking it.

That said, when tucking, I always tuck shirt ends into hosiery or even underwear if there is no hosiery or Flexees. I can't stand when layers start to pull out and build up around the middle.

Friction between layers I'm not so sure about. If you have cuffs that are folded back over outer cuffs that should hold sleevves stable. A collar out and over the top layer should stablize the neck. Keeping the body securely tucked into your hose should keep the body of the shirt stable too.

I think it helps for the button down to be pretty fitted. If the shirt feels loose and then has another layer on top of it, it doesn't lay very nicely.

I agree with above, the tightness of the shirt helps. If it fits pretty close to the body already it is far easier to layer over it. I always tuck into hose or underwear to keep the shirt in place. Just be sure when you bend, you don't see the underwear. I find layers over shirts work best a tad on the thicker side (ie thicker material than the shirt). Two flimsy layers tend not to work but varied thickness in layers does. I have no static cling advice sorry.

There have been a few posts over at academichic http://www.academichic.com/
- they are incredible at layering- where they use camisoles over the buttondown (or whatever you're layering over) to hold it in place. Sounds like a great solution, as long as the weather is cooler.

This is my exact issue with buttondowns and tucking or layering - I can't stand the bunching up under a thin sweater, and fitted buttondowns are not my friend.

I've layered button downs under everything including other tees made of thin cotton (as seen here: http://bella-remixes.blogspot.com/2011/02/330.html ) both tucked and untucked and never had any problems. Can you post an example so we can pinpoint the problem?

Isabel, I am flattered!
The sheath dresses I wear with button downs are not skin tight but more of a relaxed sheath and my shirts are pretty fitted. I usually tuck the shirt into my tights so it does not ride up when I move.

Bella, it is more of a feeling and movement issue. As long as I am standing still, it all looks good, but the minute I start moving, there are problems.

Though I realize now that my button downs need to be a bit more fitted and my top over it a little looser. Bella, I noticed that in your link, your overshirt is not super fitted. I think I will give this a go this week with all of your suggestions.
