Laundry question

What’s the name of the stuff you put in to take out dye? I don’t mean bleach. I washed a newish pillowcase that has a bit of dark pattern on a light background in a light-colored load; now there are dark spots on my gym shorts and new pistachio green top. I know I’ve heard of a product that should help. German words/brands would be best, but others would be helpful too, as I could look up brands.

It's called color catcher or dye catcher in English -- lots of common American laundry brands make one (Tide, etc.). I've never used one but tell us how it goes; I have a new-to-me pair of pants that (alone out of the whole load of laundry) acquired some weird splotches after washing.

I think a color catcher has to be used *before* the item bleeds. Unless I am misunderstanding the question?

As to how to get the bled spots out, I wish I knew. I recently washed an old pair of red shorts and hung them up to dry on a rack. I didn’t notice (nor think too much about it), but they were touching a pair of cream shorts on the dry rack and yup, bled on those shorts. I tried everything but could not get those red spots out and ended up getting rid of the cream shorts. Lesson learned…separate the reds even when drying.

Reviews are mixed, it seems to work well for whites, but for coloured items you should definitely test for colour fastness in an inconspicuous place first. Good luck!

Eva, besten Dank! My closest drug store is a Rossmann. If they don’t have this brand, at least I know what I’m looking for. DM is not much further.

Aquamarine, the items aren’t dry yet, so I’m hopeful. I’ve been trying to get myself to calm down on the hyper specific color sorting i do. Maybe it’s ok after all.

I just realised the first link ( Heitmann) is for whites only, the second product ( Dr Beckmann) works for coloured items.

Hijacking this thread to ask for the Canadian version.

I am still in mourning for the former laundry service in town, where I used to send out my white coats from the office. Now I have to wash them myself at home...

Recently I foolishly ran them through the washer with some placemats. Now they are a lovely but very unprofessional pale lilac colour. Help!

I hope you did not dry them in the machine as that sets in the dye.
Carbona also has good products but best without previous dryer. Also, avoid washing in warm water.

My Shout Color Catchers work great - and yes, they are meant to absorb a bleeding dye *before* it ruins another garment.

So that first time you wash new jeans - toss one in and watch it emerge dyed blue. Fascinating.

Progress report: the “extra” color did come out—but so did some of the other color. The workout shorts are now very pale pink, and the top is slightly lighter than it was. Unfortunately, I didn’t heed the warnings to weight it down so all the fabric was submerged; I thought what mattered was getting all of the offending dye out. Now both pieces, especially the shorts, have a faint tie-dye pattern. I may just let them be.
