Being uncouth, I think they look like they're wearing their bath suits around on the sidewalk. I also think they look really really old... and thus figure, it being the 1950s... they're like 17.
I suspect later 50's rather than early 50's. About 1953-54 ( can't remember the exact year but I was in elementary school) wildly printed petal pushers were all the rage. I do remember wearing them with crop tops. Tee shirts were still underwear for men so tops were woven. http://www.ehow.com/about_6736.....shers.html
I'm not finding any images like the pedal pushers I remember but will keep looking. They were not denim. They were cotton woven in bright prints and gathered some at the top and had a band under the knee
by the early 60s, based on my mom's pix, it was all cigarette pants and audrey hepburn in funny face. i think that's where i came by my love of that silhouette!
