That photo is by Allan Grant some time in the 1950s.

The song "Who wears short shorts" came out in 1957, so they were definitely around then.

I did find a photo of Eartha Kitt wearing short shorts in 1952, so it could be even early 50s.

Being uncouth, I think they look like they're wearing their bath suits around on the sidewalk. I also think they look really really old... and thus figure, it being the 1950s... they're like 17.

Looking at the cars, I think about 1952 or 1953. That is a '52 Buick in front and I think the Woody is a 1951.

Oh yes, look at the cars. It has to be early 50s at the very latest, as Parsley says, because those cars look to be from the 1940s.

I suspect later 50's rather than early 50's. About 1953-54 ( can't remember the exact year but I was in elementary school) wildly printed petal pushers were all the rage. I do remember wearing them with crop tops. Tee shirts were still underwear for men so tops were woven.

I'm not finding any images like the pedal pushers I remember but will keep looking. They were not denim. They were cotton woven in bright prints and gathered some at the top and had a band under the knee

by the early 60s, based on my mom's pix, it was all cigarette pants and audrey hepburn in funny face. i think that's where i came by my love of that silhouette!
