Land's End coat report: good fit, but not "me"

I know some of you were interested in how this Land's End coat turned out.

I ordered the 4P, and it fits really well, and the fabric seems nice - soft and substantial (altho it needs a good brushing after being in a box all week, as you can see), and the color is great. However, the vented back gives it a "sweet", feminine vibe that is not compatible with my current style direction, so I'll be returning it. This particular return helped me realize that I want a coat that's a bit more androgynous (which I think means more "rectangular" LOL). The search continues!

FYI, I also tried this coat from Talbot's and the back is ridiculously "swingy" - I was swimming in it from behind, so it too was returned.

I find that interesting, as I would say that detail on the back has a military vibe to me! It looks like a cross between a frock and pea coat

Ceit, I think it's the flared shape more than the detailing that's catching me up (it's frock-like silhouette, in fact).

Sarah: I just rejected a cut Target trench for the same reason --- too much girly flair --- and I'm not even going for a more adrogynous look!

I love this purple, and thank you for the report. It might actually work for me, although I'm not sure it'll be a good length.

Wow, this looks great! But I can understand if you return it because it is not 'you'. The color looks great on you. Do you think the cut might work for me - how flared is it really?

Ooh, this sounds exciting because it sounds like you really know what you want. My eye has been caught lately by cocoon styles or, as always, military.
First 2 are Mango, 3rd Gina Tricot, 4th SuperDry (this one is $$).

ETA: sounds like Astrid should check out the Lands End one though!

ETA2: I know these probably aren't your style, Sarah--I guess I am just extra chatty about fall fashion because I am not shopping aside from necessities.

Ooh- I LOVE the idea of this coat for Astrid. She has been looking for SO long.

I also adore the colour on you, but applaud your decision to stick to your style goals!

Astrid, that is so funny, because as soon as I put this coat on I thought, "this is SO ASTRID". I'm so glad you agree. I would say it's "medium flared". I really think you should give it a try. It really does remind me of you. Fingers crossed!

Scarlet, thanks for the suggestions - I'd been thinking "straight", but maybe I should also consider the opposite of flared. I like #3 - looks like that may be a Euro brand, eh? But I'll expand my "search image".

sarah, good for you! I could see that coat with dresses, but it's not as versatile with pants. It is really good to hear stories of how to stay focused. Your coat will turn up! Thanks for inspiring us to try things but keep moving. Also you have really identified a point about the cut--sounds like you're looking for a more angular/linear style.

That color is so great on you Sarah! Too bad you aren't crazy about the style. I think the 1st two that Scarlet posted are all kinds of awesome though.

I was kind of thinking along the same lines as Scarlet - something military/columnar-shaped.

Another consideration - are you looking specifically for wool coats? I know that's what you said before in your original post but I wonder if that's an absolute limitation. I have a Miss Sixty coat from last year's NAS that has more of a military vibe and I know there were two more Miss Sixty coats at this year's NAS (this one http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/mi.....n=wishlist and the one in YLF store).

These coats are also flared but not "sweet".

I love the back of your lands end coat, it's the front that doesn't grab me. I think that kind of collar doesn't have as many styling possibilities, whereas the 3rd photo Scarlet put up (and the others too, but you said you liked no. 3) have collars that will look very different depending how you style your coat.

I live in a sub tropical climate so I don't get to participate much in coat wearing fun, but I love coats, especially on men - I love the new Sherlock Holmes' coat, and John Barrowman as captain Jack Harkness. I would love to have a coat with a collar I can put up to frame my face - that would be my primary consideration!

To me, the straight style of pic no. 3 reminds me of the straight styles of the 1960s.

It is too sweet *for you*, although it looks good and fits well. You need something with an angular collar.

I like the back detail - I see it as dashing and military rather than femiinine - but the rest of the coat seems too ordinary for you. Onto better styles for YOU!

I agree totally with your assessment! The coat fits well but is so not you.

Re. the Talbots coat: was it crazy-roomy/swingy in back, or just a little bit? My wool coat has some swing in back, but I kind of like it because it helps with layering and it makes it seem sort of retro to me (pics below).

Thanks for the affirmation, Jonesy - and for the pics. No, the Talbot's coat was just a weird fit - it was like it was the right fit in front and a size up in the back - yours looks great - it fits you perfectly and just has a bit of looseness in the back. Where is it from? I think I must have looked at every coat on every website that's out there at this point (well, that sells petites, anyway).

J. Crew, from about 5 years ago, maybe? This is my heaviest winter coat (the main one I wear instead of a puffer, for work). Have you checked there? I really love their coats. This is a tall, which is optimal for me because of the sleeve length, and I think they carry petites, no? Maybe they don't have too much stock yet, but I would imagine they would be getting more within the next few weeks. They had a gorgeous cocoon coat last year, and they usually do lots of pea coats, and usually a few military-style ones too.

Yep, I've been eyeing their coats, but so far no luck. #1 is nice but I can't be bothered with a belt all winter. #2 is beautiful (Angie's from last year?), but the colors are not at all autumnal/wintry to my eye. And #3 looks like Sgt Pepper. But hopefully more options will come online was we move into the season.

I have TWO J. Crew coats and can't rave enough about them, Sarah. #2 is not the style I have, but similar - mine does not have the waist seaming. It's all vertical. I do not like horizontal waist seaming on coats.

You look SO FAB in your your coat and hat, Jonesy!
