Land's End Casual Summer Dress

I'm very impressed with the quality of the Land's End puffer I just received. As well, their shipping costs were inexpensive (IMO) to Canada and return policy and cost of returns equally impressive. I've never shopped there before so was very pleased.

In looking at their catalogue that came with the delivery, I notice they have a couple of cute casual summer dresses that could fill my need/want for a black or navy casual MOTG dress. Plus they come in petite. What do you think of these two options? They are also on sale - always nice. Have any of you purchased a dress from them and what is the sizing like?

Both of those are really cute Shannon. Especially the first with those pockets! I'm a huge sucker for pockets on dresses.

I have been considering a couple of their dresses as well, but I'm waiting to try some other dresses that are on their way to me first.

I've been told that their plus sizes run pretty large and that most have to size down, I am not sure if that translates into their misses. I am interested myself in this thread because if I size down from my normal plus size I would be ordering misses.

Ooh, I like the first one a lot. The second, too, depending on where the seams hit... I could see it fitting like an empire waist or babydoll, which I don't love. But I guess you don't know until you have it on.

I haven't bought a ton of stuff there, but the things I have ran big. The reviews are really helpful for sizing individual items. There always seem to be hundreds of reviews - a pain to sift through, but a better chance of finding useful info.

I just bought this dress:

I'm normally a medium to large (more often large) for tops/dresses, but with this I needed a medium. Another friend ordered several of the polo dresses, and they were huge on her, so I'd say they tend to fit a bit big.

Rae - I agree about the second dress. If that waist hit too high - would be a deal breaker for me. Like you, I don't care for the babydoll look.

Elizabth - thanks for posting (I feel honoured that I'm the recipient of your first post!). I also waffle between a medium and a large and I know with the coat I just bought, the large was huge. I suspect you are right in the sizing down. Love the dress you just bought!

Love the simple clean lines of these dresses! Which colours were you thinking of in each case, Shannon? Or would you try navy & black in both before you choose?

Sona has one of their dresses, Shannon. You might PM her. I think gfBrenda might have one, too. It was one of their winter ponte dresses, a very pretty sheath dress.

My experience with Land's End is that items tend to fit big and/or boxy. I am often sized out, even in their Petite items. But I have a smallish frame and no chest to speak of.

HOWEVER...Recently I ordered a petite XS of their striped sailor top. And guess what? It was way too small for me! I had to size up, and now that I have the P small I am actually ordering a small regular, because after washing it, I thought I could use the extra length! Having said that, this item is meant to fit a bit boxy so I actually want it on the loose side.

Meanwhile, my mother (for whom I order clothes from LE all the time) recently had to send back some blouses because her regular size was too small.

I'd say it is worth a try to order them. Shipping costs are reasonable and they are easy to deal with.

I like both dresses Shannon and I think they'd make perfect casual summer-y dresses.

Just wanted to share:

I told my Mom about Land's End one day when I noticed that when they have one of their sales along with "free shipping" - that the free shipping includes Canada. Mom was very pleased and ordered up a whole bunch of their button down shirts and other basics. No charge shipping, and the duty etc. was extremely reasonable. It was one of those "40% off Everything" kind of sales.

Also - LE tends to run large - if you're between a medium and a large (me too), I'd get medium for sure. Meanwhile, Land's End Canvas runs a bit more true to size - i.e. a bit smaller than the regular Land's End stuff. Before I forget - the same free shipping (when they offer it) applies to Land's End Canvas as well.

Awhile back, I ordered a fun striped knit top from Land's End (a la Parisian Chic when we were all reading that) in a medium, and it was actually too big on me. I was surprised! I had also ordered a nice silk boyfriend shirt (in a large) from Land's End Canvas and it fit beautifully So be careful with sizing here.

Again, when you see "free shipping" advertised on the Land's End site or the Land's End Canvas site, remember that this applies to Canadian orders too - very nice!

I hope you try the dresses.

Agree, they tend to run large and/or a bit boxy. Land's End Canvas tends to run more true to size and be more fitted.

Well I guess I should really check out sizes and colours before I post 'cause never mind - neither style is available in black or navy in my size from the Canadian site.

Shannon - you can order from the US site. They'll charge duty on each item that your order, but when my Mom ordered from them awhile back, the duty charges were extremely reasonable and she got the 'free' shipping that was being offered as part of a sale they were having.

I guess the trouble is that when you order from the US site, it could be difficult or near impossible to return the item(s). Mom took a chance - because she has a tough time finding nice plus-sized basics (such as the button down shirts), and luckily everything worked out for her.

You can order from the US site - and I think it's one of the better "we'll ship to Canada" sites around these days.

I like them both too. I haven't ordered dresses from them but have ordered a few other items. I find they fit a bit big so if you are inbetween, go down. If they have items that are particularly large, they often include a comment in the description advising to size down.

I like both the green and the watermelon. I think because the ON dress I bought is green, probably the watermelon. But I just read through all the reviews and am wondering - many issues with fit in the bust area apparently.

Love that one in watermelon but the green would look great on you too Shannon. I think the watermelon would let you wear the funky green shoes though.

I returned a pair of pants to Lands end. You get a label and drop it at the post office. They take $7.95 off the refund but shipping here is free.

Ah, I was looking at the reviews, too. Sounds kind of risky for me, since I don't normally have a problem with bust size. I wish more reviewers would post their bust/bra sizes; I find those so helpful.

I love my LE puffer but wasn't so thrilled with the Land's End clothes (striped top and button down shirt)--they felt very boxy and frumpy to me. I returned them all, but there was a dress that was backordered and came late. When I finally got it I didn't like it on me:

It's a cowl neck dress in hunter green. It's been sitting in a bag and I haven't had a chance to take it to Sears to return it. (Fortunately their return policy is very lenient). I may try it on one more time before I return it, but as I recall, I sized down (normally I'm a S in most stores) and got an XS (LE usually runs big) and it still felt a little roomy to me.

Dianthus - I love how easy LE returns are! I ordered my puffer in two sizes and easy as pie to send the "loser" back...just plop on that label and $7.95 deducted from your refund. Love it!

Rae - are you going to try it out anyway? I think the green would be fab on you.

Natalie - it seems their sizing is definitely on the larger and boxier side. This may be one of those instances where that may work in my favour though. I sometimes have issues with slimmer fitting items because of my shape. I guess there's only one way to find out isn't there?

I'm not sure... I have a few orders arriving today, so I'll see where I am with those first. If I keep the white Frye boots, I really shouldn't order anything else. I have been looking out for things in that emerald color, though. My return to Sears was easy, too.

I wonder if you can chat with a rep online, Shannon? I did this to ask about Paypal and returns. Maybe they can give you measurements and suggest a size?

Oops, I just went back and checked my order email and that wasn't the exact dress (but is similar). It was called "Cotton Modal Cowlneck dress" and was a size S. (It was only $18 from their post-Christmas sale). Sounds like the roomier sizing might work out for you after all. Hope it works out for you!

I'm very curious to hear about your experiences with their dresses- I love that they have such a large selection of casual petite dresses (and at great prices too). But...I haven't ordered any because my (admittedly limited) experience was that the cut was always very boxy. I hope they work - I've had my eye on a few of their MOTG-style dresses for a while!

I have the second dress (fit and flare). Lands End generally is very generous in their cut. I would say I am an 8 - small to medium in tops. I ordered both an xsmall and small. The xsmall fit very well and accentuated all my curves. However, I kept the small preferring it to be a little less fitted. My husband suggested I keep both - one for evening and one for day. This dress was not empire or babydoll on me. The band does sit above my waist, but the dress is still fitted until the waist.

The fit and flare is available in a PM in the asparagus green and mushroom. The mushroom could be a nice neutral backdrop for some of your wow jackets or the green could work with the neutral jackets.

I think both would be very nice on you. NOT that I am attempting to enable.
