Lamenting sensible spending

I've been reading everyone's K/Rs and such and I cry...

I so badly want the Melora dress from Anthro. I've tried it on and I love the fit. The color is so fun and bright it warms my heart. It would look adorable with many things I own.

However I already own 4 dresses, which I love, and hardly ever wear. It makes NO sense for me to buy this. None. But I want....

Boo hoo. Emotional support requested!

Andrea, you don't want to know how many dresses I have and I still want more! For me, "sensible" trousers are actually less smart of a purchase for me since I never seem to reach for them--dresses make me happy, look good on me and so I feel like I get good value from them. Four dresses is nothing for me, I could go through that in a week!

I think this would be a great dress for you. But only buy if you would actually wear it!

Perhaps I can incorporate more dress wearing into my dog showing.

I tend to reach for separates but if I make an effort to do my dresses it may be worth it. It comes down to a CPW issue. One of my dresses is not dog show appropriate (my Allsaints hitch dress - too poofy - it competes with the dog and the hem is right about face level for Regan) but the other 3, and the Melora, could work well I think.

Other things on my list include the AE cropped denim jacket and Fry Carson laceup booties, which I know would get a lot of wear.

How's this:

You say it will look adorable with many things you own, so make a list of those combinations. And next to each combo, list all the places you could actually and would actually wear it. If you can come up with let's say five combos and two-three places to wear each, then I say that justifies getting the dress. If you do buy it, make yourself a promise to wear at least two of the combinations from your list before the season ends.

BJ, seriously, I laughed out loud. When I tried it on last Saturday, I took pics (on my phone which I do not know how to d/l) and showed my husband. I never do that. I think I was hoping for "permission". He just agreed it was good, but no "buy it".

There is a lot of lamenting going on these days! Much of it from yours truly.

My first reaction is to first try wearing your other beloved dresses more often. You will either find out that that they work the way you think and can justify more, or you'll find that it was a flawed theory. :T

I just found out about putting capri leggings under dresses--this is going to be such a great way for me to incorportate dresses into MOTG! Perhaps that might work for your dog shows too (since you have to do a lot of running around)?

Well there are other things to dress up for besides dog shows, right? Date nights, church, summer parties, bridal showers, baby showers, etc.

Personally, since I'm a MOTG, I always look for excuses to wear dresses. I'd wear that pretty dress with casual sandals to run my errands.

What I heard is that you already own dresses that you do not wear often enough. Purchasing another does not seem warranted right now. I would recommend wearing what you have and if you find you do wear them more often, then think about adding to your dress collection.

Most of the time in Seattle you'll have to wear some sort of jacket or cover-up. That would cover up the back detail. At most you'd wear it a few times in July and August, if we're luckily this year, and currently that's not promising.

andrea, by the power vested in me by ylf, i am giving you permission to buy this dress already. clearly you are going to regret it if you let this go and that is worse to the psyche. tell your husband you are only thinking of his health and wellbeing, protecting him from experiencing a disappointed andrea.

The voices of reason have arrived! Ana, that is very true. I did think of that, and that back is too pretty to hide. Mary, you are on the money. This is so true and sensible.

Thank you all so much for the support and words of wisdom. Since Anthro has a nice return policy what I think I will do is:

Do Jewell's exercise. If it appears to make sense, I will purchase.
Save the receipt. Wear what I DO have. If I make good use of them, tags come off.
If my current dresses do not see enough wear between now and the end of July, it will go back.

AJ - I <3 you. You are so sweet. But I have to tell you I chuckled when I read your post. My social life is directly tied to my professional and sport activities. Church, parties where one wears a dress), showers... tee hee! Date night, the rare and wonderful bird that it is ALWAYS gets a dress.

I can wear dresses:
dog shows
seminars
errands
rare social events (date-night, lunch with friends, etc)

I will report back!

If you think you'll wear it, go for it! Maybe you don't wear the dresses you have because they aren't so great. I don't know, just saying - if you really want this dress and promise yourself to wear it, 5 dresses really doesn't sound like overkill to me.
