Lace-ups for Ladies? - YouLookFab Forum

I'm loving all the new lace up booties. I do have one pair: a pair of 3 year old Clarks that are a lovely rich brown, but definitely round and full in the toe and a bit like a work boot. They were orphans for a while, except for wearing to fall festivals, etc. However, during out big western trip last year, they were fabulous. With reinforcement under the sole (not steel, but rigid), good arch support and padding, and the ankle support provided by laces, they were great for days when we went from visitor center to 2 mile trail.

I'm looking for a brown pair of lace-ups for my 14 year old DD, but most of the stylings I see are a bit boho, or a bit young. Is this something I should pass by, or are there ways to wear them that would suit me?

I think the ones you show in the finds are lovely. I'm drooling over the Fryes in particular... I have the Carson oxford but I think I may love the boot even more...

I absolutely think adults can pull off lace-ups. They don't read young to me.

Jeans are a slam dunk. I also think they'd be adorable with midis--kind of a retro look, and you have the height to pull it off. Beautiful bookending with your hair, too.

I like the Clarks for a more refined look (I would wear those to the office) and I like the Frye's for more casual looks. I sure hope that lace ups don't read young as I love them and have several pairs!

I don't fine the style at all juvenile, in fact to me they read very adult and rather retro.

I like the Clarks! I clicked the picture right away. My biggest problem with lace ups is the tongue which doesn't stay in place because my ankles are narrow and very often I am lacing to the tightest point. Hopefully this isn't your problem. To solve it, I have a cobbler tack the tongue in place.

Angie: I think your pick is the most refined -- almost a cross between a bootie and an oxford. I suspect I would do well with what I call a "theater" bootie. You know, the sort of boot you wear when you're doing period drama --- Little Women, etc.

Staysfit: I have peasant feet and ankles -- strong and hearty. I have never had the struggle that you're experiencing. Of course, you can probably wear those lovely, slender Italian shoes that only fit my big toe!

Carole: Yes, indeed. I love the Clarks, but I think the heels is on the high side. 2-2 1/2 inch is more comfy for daily wear.

I love lace up styles with boots or jeans. They can hint at granny grunge or military styling without going over the top. Those Frye Carsons are my fav of those linked above. Would look great with cuffed jeans and a ditsy-floral top, or go more retro with something like a pleated wool midi skirt...

I purchased these over the summer. They're relatively flat with a small internal wedge, and more on the refined side. Have only worn them with skinny jeans so far, but really like them and think I'll be able to use them with skirts and dresses as well.

La Pedestrienne: I have seen lots of marvelous boho looks, not many military yet --- I'll be keeping my eyes open!

I kept my discount- priced Frye lace up oxfords because of the pointy toe but still comfortable. I used the Carson as Find but not exactly sure if it's the one( there are a billion Frye boots). This toe looks fab perking ouf from my more conservative work trousers.
I would likd to wear them with skirts, too but have a slight dilemma- tgese fit slightly roomy but no other size ( at TJMaxx) and the extra room is best for R foot and for socks. . Then the half size down I had in a Frye short boot was too snug so I returned them.
All that to say that they look a little " bigger" on my feet than is ideal for skirts but I might get past that. I considered ordering another size from Zappo to see if they ran different - however the price is so much higher for what for me is a targeted style shoe.

Thay are all good choices, I think. My personal favorite are the Clarks, with the Fryes as runner ups.

It never crossed my mind that lace ups were "young". I like the Fryes and Clarkes, for very different reasons/looks/stylings.

Sounds like I'm the only one who worries about the "age appropriateness" (whatever that is) of lace up boots. Perhaps I'm just seeing them styled mostly in super young ways. I like variety in my boots, and am not going to add tall boots this season, so lace ups look like a new toy!

I'd love to try a pair of lace-ups with you, Beth Ann! I had actually ordered the last pair you show in your post (the Spring Step) about a month ago. They were very comfy, but the tongue in front was just too large and fought with the hems of my pants. It was too bad, because they were great otherwise. I never questioned lace-ups' age appropriateness, FWIW. I hope you find a pair that works for you! I'm hoping that they're becoming more of a trend and that we'll see more offerings in the stores soon.

I love lace ups too and have never thought of them as young. I like the ones you have chosen, especially no 1. I have 2 pairs of casual lace ups. The first are by Cobb hill and are super comfy for all day walking. I wear them with jeans and, now that it is warm here, with shorts and skirts. I suspect boots with shorts is a young look but I am doing it anyway because it is very practical (the lace ups are much tougher than sneakers or sandals). Discount a few years ago. I love the look of these but they are a bit of a pain to get in and out of because there is no side zip. They are on the chunky side but I treat them as a dressy shoe because of the heel. I wear them with jeans.
