K/T: Summer Dresses - YouLookFab Forum

I'm afraid I'm going to be a bit of a forum hog today. I have several questions for you, so please help me out. Here's the first: I have two summer dresses that I'm not sure what to do with. They are in excellent condition, but are they me anymore? I'm really not sure if they reflect my style. I always get complimented when I wear them, which is rare, admittedly. I haven't tried to style them very much here.

#1: What do you think of this dress in terms of style, cut, length, color for me? It is viscose jersey, and I've had it a few years. If I keep it, how can I style it to work better for my style?

#2: And what about this one in terms of style, cut, length, color/pattern? It is silk chiffon, and I bought it only a year ago. If I keep it, how can I style it to reflect my style better?

I'm really on the fence here, and neither love or hate these (I wouldn't have asked for advice then, of course). Please give me your honest opinion. I have enough clothes, and I don't want to keep anything that isn't doing any good for me.

Dress 1 is so not you.. Ingunn.. But I have not liked this pattern much either.
Dress 2 looks more like beach vacation dress to me. I like it but no help styling it...

From the outfits of yours I've seen, I'd say #1 is more likely to fit with your style than #2. The lines of #1 are quite simple, whereas the overall shape of #2 is a bit "floofy". I'm not wild about the colour of #1, but you could add interest with coloured accessories (necklace, bag, shoes), perhaps in turquoise or red.

Hmm, when I saw them I was quite surprised as they don't look quite *you* I feel they have a hint of romanticism about them and I don't usually see that in your other wiw's. I'm not sure about styling them as it's not a style i really wear either so not a clue I'm afraid. Not sure if they are worthy of keeping.

I would say: 1: Keep; 2: Toss.

But I agree with above comment about it being you or not: if you don't feel like you in it, then better toss it and get something else altogether.

Personally, I find 1 so pretty and flattering on you, both in cut and colour. I see lots of outfit potential and layering potential, even wearing it as a top only under a skirt. But in the end it's up to you.

Your style seems to be much more classic and sophisticated. Could you make use of these for casual barbecues, or as swimsuit cover ups?

I am probably not going to be of much help as I can't articulate why I am saying this, but my thought is to toss both of them, you usually look much fabber than this. But of course feel free to ignore me if the more experienced fabbers have great styling ideas.

I may be biased, but I got rid of two very similar dresses at the end of last summer. I wasn't wearing them anymore because I didn't feel fab. The dresses looked fine, but they didn't feel like my style anymore. I had other styles I ended up reaching for instead.

I think they look fine on you -- the length doesn't bother me -- but I would pass along #1, I think. #2 looks like it would be very comfy for a hot summer day.

I think you have probably outgrown the style in terms of age (I think the first one is a bit um juevenile in style) and just taste. You do have other dresses like these but have paired them with more classic pieces. The second one is fine in length for you.

Krish, thank you! I guess I could have it altered. My main objection against #1 is the color and the puffy sleeves. I like the skirt. Maybe it could be made into two pieces and worn separately? That's a very interesting idea!

missvee and carolbee, thanks for chiming in. Yes, I could find use for them as beach cover ups and such. It is definitely an option, particularly for #2.

Janet, I guess this is why I'm posting. I don't feel fab in them, that's it. I just like them enough to keep, but not to wear.

Ingunn, the puffy sleeve has been almost completely banished from my closet, but not without a lot of hemming and hawing, so I totally understand! Those sleeves were everywhere a couple of years ago.

I also debated cutting a couple of dresses with those sleeves down into skirts but just decided it wasn't worth the effort and passed them along. I had other pieces I liked better.

My honest gut reaction is not fab enough for you. I agree the first one is a bit girly and the second one looks like more of a beach cover up (maybe could work as part of casual outfit with cropped leggings).

Jayne, that might definitely have something to do with it. I'm very conscious of my legs in the first dress, maybe both. The second is more boho than I feel, and it is also very brown. Brown has been off my radar for some time.

I love these threads for what they reveal about the personal style of the respondents as much as for their benefit to the original poster! I think if each of us went back and read our responses to these threads, we'd begin to see a distinct style persona of our own emerging, just as with Angie's "Team X or Team Y" threads.

So...with that in mind (and my biases out there for the whole world to see):

I SO do not care for #1 for you. Length is fine, but I find the style rather young and a bit dated. You look pretty in it, but you look pretty in everything. It's just too fussy.

#2 has maybe more possibilities as a dress for a very hot day (if you get those) but it reminds me a bit of the silk tunic that you passed along. There's a boho feel to it. This is terrific, if you enjoy it, but it isn't consistent with most of your other looks.

I think both can go - or keep the second one as a coverup. Length wise they are fine, but they just don't seem to fit your current style.

I'm with Suz on these dresses Ingunn - #1 needs to be passed along. Nowhere near enough FAB for you. The second one is ok and could work for lounging around on a hot day, but if you don't love it, let it go.

Toss 1 for sure - it's too young and sweet for you. 2 might work with cropped leggings or over skinny jeans. Try that before you decide to toss.

#1 is in the donation bag I'm thinking #2 will end there, too.

The dresses both look fine on you.....whether they fit with your style is another question. #1 to my eye, seems a bit juvenile and not consistent with your style. #2, again, looks good on you, but is not consistent with what I've seen your wear via your posts. It looks more like a holiday dress to me. KWIM?

You are too sophisticated for these, Ingunn. I vote toss both.

Suz articulated my thoughts on these dresses. If you have any boho leanings, keep #2. If you keep #1, I vote for altering the puffy sleeves to sleeveless or making it a skirt. The fabric pattern of #2 goes so well with your hair.

You are right, I'm tossing these. I love how you all make the rejection of the dresses sound like a compliment

I'd come back to this post to try and convince you to keep them (or at least one) but I am glad I don't need to! The 2nd one was workable I think, but I agree that the 1st was just to young - I've just thrown out all of my peasant style dresses and tops too. Love them, but they are no longer me!

So, I am going to write this and then go back and look at the other posts so I am not biased.

I love #1 one you style wise. Not certain the color is very flattering, though. When I first looked at the picture, I thought it was so pretty and feminine, but a bit dull colorwise. Maybe it would be worth attempting to dye, or spice up with some colorful accessories.

I am not feeling #2. The shape is not my favorite on you, and I am not loving the pattern.

It sounds like the decision is made, but for what it's worth I would toss #1 and keep #2. A flowy dress with sandals can be really nice for summer. And as someone else said, #2 could work very well as a beach coverup.
