K/T brown plaid jacket - YouLookFab Forum

I have been doing some closet cleaning in preparation for an appointment at the consignment shop, and I ran across a brown turtleneck, which made me realize that I only keep it because it is the top that works best with this jacket. However, I haven't worn this jacket in years. With the 70s retro thing coming back around, it seems like this would possibly come into play now if I were ever going to wear it again. But it's very hip-emphasizing, so I have hesitated to wear it for quite a few years now. I've also hesitated to get rid of it because it's unusual and kind of weird retro equestrian cool (imho, at least -- maybe you think it's ugly and needs to go, in which case, please feel free to let me know ;-). And it fits well.

I don't own much brown, so this is an outlier in my closet and not easy to style anyway. It is not exactly a throw on and go piece, so it isn't easy for me like a moto or bomber jacket.

I even wondered if it would work better with the belt closure in front removed so it could just be worn open. Included a photo with it open and the belt part tucked under.

What do you think? Should the jacket and the brown turtleneck go? Looking for brutal honesty.

I rather like it Janet, I also see a funky cool equestrian thing. But I then too have a similar jacket that hasn't been worn in two+ years which keeps hanging around because it's nicely made and interesting looking. This feels a little more literal-70s to me with the belt, and a little more modern-70s without it. I personally really like the more significantly structured look with the belt. I'd be tempted to pair on top with more of your blues and teals and burgundies and creams versus the brown turtleneck, but it does make a great low-contrast look paired with say black pants or dark blue denim; you could always hang the pair together so it's less of a difficulty when trying to style.

I think it's quite cool! I prefer it without the belt, but I say wear it! Even if you just have one working outfit for it, I bet you get compliments everytime you wear it!

I think this is one of those things that if you said I love this but ...should I keep it? I would say it looks great on you absolutly keep it. The fact is, It does look great on you.
However, you seem a little apathetic about it. I think even if you keep it you won't reach for it. Your style is really well honed, and you have tons of stuff in your closet that blow this out oUT of the water.

Tough one. It does fit you well but it is VERY 70s looking. You have so many awesome jackets that I like better, so I would let it go.

I think I prefer it without the belt, anyway.

FWIW, I see the jacket as more waist emphasizing than hip emphasizing. . . I have mixed feelings about the belt since it makes the look even busier. Since it seems like plaid is trending, I would probably hold onto it if you feel comfortable in plaid. I see you more in a blue and green tartan plaid that this one, however. Regardless, it looks great on you.

My vote is consign. The colour seems wrong on you. The shape is nice though. I know you said you thought it was hip emphasizing,and I didn't notice that.

First, it's absolutely not ugly!

You know I love 99.999999999 % of your stuff but this is one thing I have not immediately loved on you. I think it is very interesting, and rather like the side/ back views but you wear so many things that are drop dead flattering and gorgeous, I would not waste a chance to look "wow", ever, if I were you.

The colors are nice on you, but we are all wishing for a little of your trademark blue/teal, I think.

I vote consign.

It looks good on you but I don't love it and the style doesn't look current...although it doesn't look dated either. If you have to force your self to wear it or it doesn't make you happy, let it go.

I vote consign too. It is a cool jacket but it seems hard to wear, and I doubt you will pull it out and wear it a lot.

My first thought was that the color is not as flattering on you as the cooler colors you favor so I agree with Smittie and Lisa. I like the equestrian cut as well but not as much the belt. I also thought it was figure flattering as it really emphasizes the smallness of your waist.

Color is really important for me so I lean towards consign on this one.

Toss! On my monitor at least the color is not showing as your best--your cooler colors are way more fab-- and the pattern is a little "much" compared to things you've been wearing.

I like thinking about how to decide, though, especially for items I haven't figured out.

One thing I use for items that might have been "in" or something at one time is whether I quit wearing it all or partly because it didn't seem current for "fashion" but I really wished it were! Those "love" things that you'd wear in a heartbeat if you saw them showing up again.
Yes, I know we're supposed to "wear what we love" and all that, and then often a past "love" will start not quite fitting or looking right proportion so then you can tell you don' still really love that exact item, but might get something modern in a similar style, but still I am sometimes a bit inhibited by in's and out's enough to quit wearing something but keep it in holding zone.

Thank you, everyone! I actually put the jacket (and the turtleneck) in the consignment pile last night before I went to bed. Along with a couple of pairs of shoes and boots that don't make the grade comfort-wise that make me feel guilty every time I look at them. The pile is growing slowly. The consignment shop has a limit of 50 pieces for each appointment, and at first I thought I wouldn't be anywhere near that, but it's turning out to be nearer than I expected!

I vote consign (based purely on color, not on fit).

I'm the weirdo - I love the jacket, which reminds me of that Willow & Clay one Diana has. But if you're over it, put it goes!

The fit is great but I vote that it's time to let it go. (Keep in mind that this advice is coming from someone who has a couple boxes of items that I have not had the courage to let go and they don't even fit me as well as your jacket fits you.)

I also vote consign. Although I like the colors and shape it does seem that lately you'be been wearing more streamlined items with less busy patterns.

Janet, I would pass this on. There is something about it, coupled with what I think I understand of your style, that tells me you are not going to wear it.
