K/R: Yet Another Puffer

My puffer haul arrived today! Sadly, the only one that is a contender at all is the teal one that Astrid also got. Behold pic #2 for what passes for an XS in the vest! Yikes!

Concerns:

- Hubs says, "Meh."
- Color?
- This is clearly neither UWP nor SGT... but does that matter in the bitter cold?
- The fit is still pretty big for my purposes. Basically, I wanted the *extra* warm coat because I dislike layering and carrying around multiple layers after I strip off.
- I feel like I love this coat on everyone else but question it on myself.

Thoughts?

I like the colour on you - a lot. It is neither UWP nor SGT that's true, but agree that this may not be the most important factor. In order to meet your UWP criteria, it would need to be black or grey or brown or army green.

As for fit, to my eye it doesn't look too big. But I'm not the expert here so others will need to chime in.

Bottom line for me - I like it and think it works. But do you?

As for the vest - oh my!

What's SGT?

I like the fit of the puffer but on my computer it looks more powder blue than teal. I know you and I have somewhat similar coloring and I look washed out in pastels like light blue. Does it come in a more saturated darker teal? I feel like your complexion needs deeper colors.

The vest is too big, but...

I quite like the puffer coat on you. I realize it's not UWP or SGT (not sure what this one means), but it's a really nice colour on you and it's just that much better than most puffers because the colour's a little different than the norm. It's like the orchid trench coat - it's the colour that makes it special. Besides, I think this one fits you quite well.

Did you get a good deal on it? If so, then imo, it's a keeper. It's not black, navy or what have you...just a wee bit different, and I think it works.

In the meantime, I hate to say it - but I think most husbands/partners will say "meh" to *any* puffer coat. That is, until we're in the depths of winter, and everyone else is in black.

I think this is a fab puffer coat for you. If I were you, I'd keep it!

PS - what does SGT stand for?

Natalie, the color is a saturated, true turquoise, not powder blue. Does that change your opinion?

I got it on mega sale, plus extra off because it is one of the "not quite perfect" items Lands End sells. Can't find a darn thing wrong with it.

I specifically did not want black, navy, brown, green etc... because I feel that if I get lost in a snow storm I won't be visible! lol

I'm on the fence with that colour for you too... but to me, it isn't reading as teal anyway, so could be my monitor is showing the wrong colour...

It's not that the colour doesn't suit you. It's more that it is well outside the rest of your wardrobe palette from what I can recall.

I am getting quite an education in puffer jackets:). Rae I find the color very attractive on you. And I don't see this NOT working with your wardrobe. When would you wear this? Does it go to the office? Weekend wear?

This would basically be gear - worn for nighttime sporting events outside and travel to cold climes. It wouldn't really need to coordinate with anything except jeans and boots.

OK, I looked at it on my desktop and it does look darker than on my laptop. Since it's not pastel blue, I change my vote to yay because I love turquoise (on myself and on you too)! Enjoy!

Rae, in that case I think it's perfect. Great color and great fit and it will look great over your jeans and various boots which will still reveal your awesome style as they peek out from under the coat:)

Rae, not so fast on the vest. Remember, it is intended to be worn over layers. I wear mine over long underwear, a sweater and a light shell jacket! Of course if you want to wear it this way, it won't work. But there is a reason it's cut the way it's cut.

I like the puffer on you but you need to feel you'll wear the colour and enjoy it and not feel out of character for yourself.

Is this a puffer vest? If so then I agree with Suz: try it on with appropriate layers first.
I think the puffer coat looks great. Both my DH and my mom don't like puffer coat on me too (one of their reference is "looks like walking blanket" but I don't care in this case

I find the colour actually quite flattering on you, UWP or SGT or not:-) you just have to be in the mood of a freezy winter day...

I'm with Suz and Sveta on this. If you want the vest to fit snugly over minimal layers then you might try one like this:

I have it in black. It's got stretch on sides so can accommodate more or less layers and is relatively warm (although not "puffy")

I'm looking at the vest again Rae and totally agree with Suz and Sveta. Try it with the layers underneath. Plus you can always have the underarms taken in if the rest of the fit is ok.

If anything, I would have wanted the vest to layer *under* my not-quite-puffer coats, to maybe make them doable in snow... plus I don't have any sweaters that will add 5" to my bustline. o_0 Maybe that's because I'm a CA girl and have wimpy sweaters, too?

I'm still debating the puffer... not 100% sure if the benefits outweigh the fact that I'm not madly in love (which I'd finally added to my list of purchase criteria).

Jeanne, I really love the colors of the vest you posted! If I return the coat, I might try that one.

I really love that color (for me)! How much was it? Inquiring minds want to know just how *mega* that sale was. Are college football games played at night? I was freezing at the end of our season last year.

Is red an option for you (and available in your size)? You look so great in your red jacket and it seems to be a little more UWP.

Claire, it was $58.50. So a little more than the one I ordered on Memorial Day, but still mucho off the original price. I believe if you search NPQ on Land's End you can find it.

Since you say the color is "saturated, true turquoise" then I think colorwise it's fine; having pretty, bright colors when it's cold and bitter is a great pick-me-up. But if you feel meh, and hubby feels meh, I do think there are puffers out there that would make you feel less meh. Since it's not an urgent garment, continuing your search should be OK though I dunno how many UWP puffers exist There's also the option of trying things to make this one more UWP, if you think the fit is great otherwise (adding crazy buttons, spikes, straps etc).

I think I'm going to return all the puffers, sadly. Since this is going to be used during holidays with family, I really don't want it to read as powder blue in photos, since it'd likely be in a lot of them. As Aida pointed out, it's not a pressing hole... I will bide my time and troll ebay for a while. I will just have to make do with layers for the ballgames for now.

Claire, unfortunately the red was a bad red for me IRL. Both DH and my bff noticed right away. :T

I'm going to be the lone raider but I vote return on both. The vest is too big, even if worn as outerwear and the coat is too minimalistic for your style persona. This coat looks good in red only, IMO. The simple design is saved by the color contrast.

Look at soia and kyo for outerwear. I've seen killer deals off eBay.

This is all cracking me up ! I went off the forum for 10 days and people are PUFFER shopping. ....and it is 98 degrees here with awful humidity.

I say NO to puffers ( facetiously ) !
