K/R x 3: lightweight coat; wrap top; asymmetrical floral skirt

Hi all

I would like your thoughts on these potential purchases.

No 1. Olive green coat. This is a lightweight coat made from tencel. It is lined. I should be able to wear this in late Autumn (if it ever gets cold here), early winter and early spring. I would like to add more olive to my wardrobe.

What do you think of the big shawl collar? I think it looks better IRL than in the model photo. I have no idea why they spread it out like that. I like it but, in terms of longevity, would it be better to go more classic? I took this home because it was half price and I thought that they might run out, but I can easily take it back.

No 2. Wrap top. This sold out straight away at my local Witchery store, so I had to order it online. Wrap tops don’t always work for me because I have a smallish chest and long neck. Also, the shoulders look more puffy on me than on the model. I generally avoid puffy shoulders because I am broad shouldered already. Still, I have absolutely nothing like this and it’s so pretty. I would like to take my style a little more romantic this winter.

No 3. Dark floral asymmetrical skirt. I would really like a dark floral asymmetrical skirt for Autumn/Winter. This is a wrap skirt with tie waist.

Although labelled “winter floral”, it is a medium weight viscose/silk blend. Not that heavy but that’s not a problem in my climate. I could wear this now, which is attractive.

My main issue is the pattern. I like the colours a lot but I generally prefer a larger scale floral. Too girlie for me? Hold out for better? I haven’t bought this yet.

Last pic is of WIW today. 28 here today but we are expecting a cooler day tomorrow.

I like the coat and hear your concerns about the collar. I think the jacket definitely works better closed than opened- think it controls the collar better. But olive color is fab on you.
Wrap top will head you in romantic direction with both wrap and lace look.
Love the skirt for you. Love the style and the print size - I think it is great. Think you wear it as well, if not better than model..... that’s just my opinion.

Brooklyn, I think you can wear everything with style. The cost is very nice but better closed because collar, to my mind. The blouse is beautiful, so romantic, you look sweet. The skirt just for you floral, like it. Keep all of you can and enjoy.

I looked at pics before reading your comments, and had the same thoughts as you on the skirt. I like both the top and the coat, but I don’t find the skirt print to be sophisticated enough for you. It’s too bad, because the shape is lovely!

You honestly look better in these items than the models. Stunning all round. I love the olive coat and green top - these are WOW!!

The skirt I also like very much, but it did not take my breath away like the other two pieces. The skirt looks lovely on you and I do like the shape - but then everything looks lovely on you...

I think only buy the skirt if you have a wardrobe hole. I do understand that given our weather, this is a piece that you could wear for probably 9 months of the year, but I can see why you are undecided.

The wrap blouse looks absolutely gorgeous on you, especially with the pencil skirt! I love it and for me it's definitely a keeper.
I vote keep for the coat as well - I agree with previous commenters that it looks much better closed.
The skirt fits well, but I agree with Jenn concerning the print.

The coat is a definite keeper ! So elegant , and I love the colour on you. The top looks good too , from what I can see; I'm not fond of the skirt , in all honesty. The small print and all of that extra drape isn't wowing me, like your clothes always do.

Agree with above comments. The coat had drama but drapey elegance- lovely on you. The top — looks great, so you decide if/ how it fits in. The skirt is pretty, no problem, but is a little ditzy for you.

the coat collar is definitely a trend I'm seeing everywhere, but I bet it does have staying power. I was in Chicago for the weekend (I'm from Michigan, and it is the big metro shopping area for those of us here with a dearth of shopping). But I saw these larger lapels all over the city, on very chic women, so while it may be a trend, i think it will be around for a bit. Makes my traditional trenches feel rather . . . staid. This seems very current; KEEP.

I adore the coat. Confession, I have a weakness for big dramatic collars. So I'd never tell you a collar was "too much." But this one looks elegant, and it is soft so it adjusts well to various positions you might want to wear it in. Keep!!

I also adore the blouse on you. So pretty and romantic. I hear you about the puff sleeve but it is quite refined. Your necklace fills the neckline well.

I love the shape of the skirt but not the print for you. I would hold out. It looks like asymmetric skirts are trending so there will be a better version around the corner with a pattern more in line with your preferences.

Skipped your commentary as to not influence my vote. I like 1 and 2, but less so number 3. With the first two, I would just make sure they’re not going to be too fussy and need constant readjustment.

I love EVERYTHING here. I want to go shopping with you. I thought the coat was my favorite until I saw the skirt and how you styled it with the straight knee high boots. AND the necklace, OMG.
About the print: no, it's really good, especially with the boot's color. They pick up the fower's hue and therefore make them standout more.

Re the skirt print - while it may be small, it's spaced, so the black between the floral patterns doesn't make the pattern seem "small", to my eye.

Ditto! I'm drooling over the coat. It seems like something you'll wear for years. Tencel can wrinkle, so you may have to steam it from time to time, but otherwise, it's "super fab!" I love the wrap top on you. You mentioned your shoulders are wide, but you're so slim that it still works and looks perfectly proportional.

The skirt doesn't read dark floral to me, but it's cute anyway! I can't tell the fabric, but it seems like it could be a great transitional piece. Others have mentioned they don't feel like it's sophisticated enough...not sure I see that. It could be just the thing to make you feel like it's extra new...if that makes sense.

I adore the coat all ways except pic 4 where you've maybe pulled it a bit tight around the collar? My fave way is actually pic 1, open. Fantastic drape. Great colour on you.Keep!
I'm not so wowed with the other 2 purchases to be honest. Of course they look lovely, everything does on you. But they don't immediately inspire the exclamation "Wow" like your clothes usually do for me? I'm not entirely sure why, which doesn't help, sorry.

Brooklyn, you look fab in both the coat and the blouse. These green shades are beautiful on you. And the shawl collar looks great. The skirt is very nice (and the yellow flowers are kind of echoed in your boots as well as your hair). Not too girly. Feminine, I would say. And your statement necklace really adds pizzazz to your outfits.

I really like all three pieces. I like the shape of the skirt, which seems a bit different from most of your skirts. Only you can decide whether you like the print or not. Prints are so subjective. I think the green blouse is beautiful on you and the puff on the sleeve is small enough that it doesn't broaden your shoulders. Fun trench.

I like all three pieces Brooklyn. You look beautiful in all of them and you have styled them perfectly as usual. I especially love the top.
As for the skirt’s pattern - I like it. To my eye, it is modern and interesting and it looks great with the colour of the boots, your hair and the top.

They are all really nice pieces - and you do look great in them all.

1) I think this would be perfect for your commute and climate. It is flatting, a great colour and weight. I struggle with these sorts of tie belts though - I find them hard to sit right. If tie belts are good on you I think then I would get it because it looks modern but also classic so has some longevity.

2) This is really gorgeous on you - I like it. I think it is very flattering and a new shape on you. It would also work under jackets and is a solid colour:)

3) This looks good but I don't quite love it like I do your black and white asymmetrical one or some of your other skirts. If you love it then do get it but if you are unsure I think I would pass.

Coat is gorgeous on you! The wrap top is beautiful and I agree with Bijou that these pieces look better on you than on the models. I like the skirt, I like the print, and I like how it fits you, but if you don't love it or are unsure, it is better to wait for another skirt you love more. You already have beautiful skirts and this seems to be a skirt season with lots of options available, so don't need to settle for anything you don't feel it is perfect.

Thanks everyone! This has been very helpful.

Firstly, the coat. I going to keep it. Like Suz, I quite like the dramatic collar but I was somewhat concerned it would date the coat. I haven't seen the look around here (interesting that AndiB has). I do see a lot of waterfall type lapels though. They have been around a long time and seem to have moved into classic status. So maybe this will be the same. Jenni, I prefer the collar out too but wanted to make sure I could tuck it in if I got sick of it or it became a nuisance. Sally, I think the belt will be OK. I would probably only belt it on a windy or (unexpectedly!) chilly day.

The blouse. I really love this and feel motivated to keep it. I have seen some women here wearing lacey, romantic tops and I want to get on board! I have to be careful with lace around my neck or chest because it has a tendency to make me itchy/scratchy. The placement of the lace here, on the sleeve, is ideal. Jenni, I do think wrap tops look better on gals who are better endowed than I am, but I am hoping it is JFE. I am going to try it out tonight with a few different bottoms before I make a final decision.

The skirt. It's interesting how opinions differ on this! I am going to go with the majority and pass on it at this stage. I do like the colours in the pattern and how well it goes with my boots (an entirely accidental styling, but thanks Krish, the Cat and Katerina). But I think it is just not moody enough for me. I like it but don't love it. As Suz says, the shape of the skirt is trending (along with floral), so a better version may come along. I think it is Sterling who says that if you are thinking about buying something to fill a desire for a particular style, and you think you are going to keep looking for that style afterwards, then you probably shouldn't buy it. I suspect I would keep looking for my perfect dark floral asymmetrical skirt! Full disclosure: I already have a Carven asymmetrical skirt (in Finds) for winter. Not floral. It's wool and too heavy to wear now, but should be OK in about 6 weeks. So I wont be deprived of an asymmetrical skirt for long. And, as Dianna says, I have lots of other nice skirts. Patience.

The coat is so gorgeous on you - of course you must keep! The blouse is also stunning. The skirt is ok, but does not measure up. Not sure if it is the size of the pattern or what. I really love how you wear your beautiful necklace. I am drawn toward that look (not that I have a Chanel necklace!) and I think you are pushing me over the edge (in a good way of course).

Glad you are keeping the coat. I believe the style will be popular for a while yet - it seems to be a coat/collar style favoured by Ms. Markle (Harry's squeeze) so is trending big at retail just now. Regardless, the colour and style are lovely on you.

RC, of course! It all makes perfect sense now. I remember seeing the last outfit you post above and thinking how nice it was to see brown being worn again. But there is definitely a collar “look” there too. Thanks, that makes me feel more confident it will be around for a while.
