K/R Wine Jacket

One of the many,many items I picked up last night at a sale was this jacket. I am not sure what to think of it. Everyone in the store thought it looked great.

A couple of concerns: it is really light weight. I will wear it, likely, this month only. And againin Spring. That's all the "season" we have for a coat as light as this.

This colour is really trendy: too trendy? Will it look heavy come Spring? (The red I would consider *mine* and would wear no matter what the fashion is not as dark as this.)

It is a funny length. I kind of wish it were shorter--more bomberish--so I am having a hard time judging whether it is OK.

The flaps are the style of the jacket--no scarves layered outside this thing for me. But tucking in seems frumpy. And looking at the pictures, the lapels do not seem as big as they seem in real life. I liked them bigger.

What do you fabbers think? I am not sure I can *see* this properly at all! Thanks!

I like the jacket and think the length is a good length.
So this is going to seem odd - one thing I have started doing is layering my lighter jackets. I'm not sure how to explain it but I have some lighter jackets I like tons and I will wear two together for a different look. I will wear the first one buttoned up and the second one open so you can see the first one. Just a thought to help extend the wearing time of a jacket.

If I had another jacket Frannieb, I might give that a try! Will you post a pic? I think I saw something like that on pinterest--but it was suit jackets.
I have really thick upper arms, though, so it would be touch and go.

While all colors ebb and flow in prominence, this deep red / burgundy is a perennial favorite for me. Like Frannie, I often layer jackets. I did so liberally on my just finished trip out west, with morning temps in the camper around freezing! This jacket could be worn indoors, too, I think. I wear a raspberry anorak indoors to basketball games, and also when shopping. I find a light jacket can work on colder days as a jacket to wear in a mall. I do so hate to lug around a heavy coat!

I know what your mean about wishing the coat were a tad shorter, but I think the length appears deliberate and the proportions are good. I love the flap details and the bold, well fitted, shoulder line -- very flattering.

How do you feel wearing it?

I like this on you, Alana, and don't see the length as a problem . As a matter of fact, I think this provides better coverage and warmth than a shorter one would, and the proportions work. Keep!

I think you look really good in this jacket! The fit appears to be good, and the lapels look to me to be just the right size. Are you able to take of pic of your back? Sometimes jackets that look OK from the front don't fit properly in the back.

I think the length is OK. It might look nice a tad shorter, but it doesn't look too long. I think the main thing is whether you feel like your waist matches the placement of the waist on the coat. This might better be seen from the back.

I don't know that I would consider this color trendy; it seems pretty classic to me. I think that the style of this jacket reads pretty classic in general and could be worn for quite some time.

Can you wear it over a lightweight sweater so as to extend its wearing season? I wouldn't nix this jacket outright simply because you can't wear it for a long period. Lightweight toppers are necessary. You don't need a lot of them, but you do need some.

Looks great with the collar open. If you intend to wear it that way, mostly, keep! Assuming you decide you like it, that is.

In spring, you could refresh it with the other things you wear. For instance, a scarf that includes some "spring-like" colours and a bit of the wine. You might start wearing a different bag, lighter coloured booties....even your white denim on dry days.

Sorry, Hubs proposed we go on a mini cheesecake date after supper, but I felt tired.

Ah. If you don't love it, take it back. You won't expire for want of it (since its season is short) and you can save the money for something else.

lisap--you're right! I was forgetting about being practical there for a minute!
gigi--I will do my best to take a picture of the back, tomorrow, when the lighting is better. I didn't know it is easier to see the waist that way but it makes sense. This style and colour are classics? I never knew. Interesting. I just thought that because "wine" was one of those "things" this fall that it was trendy. But I think I don't understand what "trendy" means?
Suz--you think the scarf tucked in looks OK? Unless we get strong winds, I can wear the lapels down. Lighter coloured booties, she says, in Spring? Try light coloured rainboots, lol! (We tend to get more snow in March than we get all winter. Makes for a very wet April. But May is glorious. As you know.

There is this scarf at Reitman's I am considering. It is one of those "infinity" scarves--would that work well with this style of jacket?

It is the cherry chutney scarf I am thinking of--though really any of the three would do (in fact each of the other two would meet some of the criteria for two different Angie ensembles (Hot pink, orange and wine for the "magnolia" and light blue and wine for the ballpoint blue. Would it be going overboard to purchase all three?)

And of course, if I ever get a Mango order put together, there is this beauty Inge found for me.

I really like it a lot! I think it is flattering and the color is beautiful on you. I have a soft spot for this shade though!
I find it really handy to have one in- between jacket. For me it's a trench and I thrash it a few weeks a year and then out it away. I still get some pleasure out of it!

The fit looks good Alana - from what I can see in the pics. Does this color play nicely with the other colors in your wardrobe? I ask, because I think this jacket would look even better if you left it open and you could do a column of color underneath it. KWIM?

Gigi--I'm a dolt. I tried on the jacket for dh and he asked me where my bi-plane was. So, um, yeah. Classic it is, then. And yes, he likes it.

Lucy--thanks! I was thinking trench, too, but it really wouldn't flatter me all that much--and I can't find on locally to try it out anyway. I am glad you like your coat. It is good to have things we look forward to that we only have once in a while.

Marley--excellent point. I would most definitely wear it open while shopping, for instance. I bought some wine coloured tops at this same sale--would that be too much wine? (Is there ever too much wine? Don't answer that.) Right now, the only column of colour I can make is black--and in two different ways! I have a new ON order coming, so if the grey Tee fits, I can do a column of grey. If I ever decide on a white shirt, I can add my white denims and get a column of white. But the way things are going, that might not happen until Spring. Which would be OK. Wouldn't a chambrey shirt and some medium wash jeans look stellar with this?

Oh Marley--you are a genius. Now, I want to rush out for cheesecake--and not take the jacket off!

The wardrobe seems to be shaping up into black, white, wine and grey. I will definitely be adding some ink, navy and light blue as it becomes available.

I think that jacket looks great on you!

My only concern would be that it sounds like you are making lots of rapid fire wardrobe decisions & in my personal experience that's when I am vulnerable to making mistakes because I'm just so over stimulated by so much new stuff!

I have always been somewhat 'under clothed' in that I have never had a large number of items. When I had a small number of crappy items it was tempting to think I could just buy my way out of that place with a bunch of new pieces. But really what I needed was to gradually upgrade the discernment with which I made each individual wardrobe choice. That really started to click for me when I could see how my new deliberately chosen pieces could come straight home & immediately elevate the things already in my closet.

Anyway... I hope that is helpful. I really like that wine jacket! It looks like a very nice wardrobe addition. Wine is one of my favorite colors & when I see wine in lighter weight fabrics I pay attention because I love it with white jeans and metallic sandals too! xo

Alana, The color is a great compliment to your neutrals. It might work with almost everything! Please try it open, thinking of it as an "inside" jacket. Put it on with an outfit you might wear with a cardigan or blazer. I think it could work really well all fall and winter in that way. I would imagine wearing it under my winter down puffer or other coat. With cold weather outerwear you want room to wear many layers, especially when commuting!

First, the jacket looks good and very wearable, and versatile as to color and working in all seasons( color- wise). So I'd next consider, do I have a need for this jacket? I know I would use that weight of a topper because can toss over sleeveless or light sweater. So, would it extend the wear of your lighter tops, where you might be ok topper- less indoors but not going out the door? And for me I would wear in a/c, freezing grocery or even just in case in a restaurant. So sometimes a topper like this subs for a blazer and works over tops of varying lengths.
But if you just don't like it much, that's okay, too. As with other try- ons, if you're not keen on it, you may be able to decide what you'd like to be different and keep your eye out for that.

I like the jacket and the fit, but I honestly don't think it's the best color for you Alana. If it's not your best red (as you say), and you don't love it and you will have only a small window to wear it ... I vote return.

I think this color and jacket shape are both absolute classics, so if you love it, it will be something you should be able to style successfully for as long as it fits you. But you really need to feel it, you know? I'll be interested to see how deep the love is today after you've slept. In my experience, no sale price is deep enough if the love isn't there.

Indoor wear is a good idea, but it looks to me as if the fabrication is more like a light outdoor jacket?

You might want to look for a similar style in a different fabric for wearing indoors as Marley and JamC suggest.

Marley lives in southern California. This explains how the words "coat" and "open" work together in her vocabulary. And I plan to move in with her as soon as possible.

I think that that is the kinda jacket you wear over a light to medium weight sweater and under a coat in the winter. I'm having problems "seeing" the big picture though-- although it is a fabulous color.

Beth Ann-- so glad to hear you are back-- I hope I warned you sufficiently about the temp swings, although I do get that people have a very hard time with it until they experience it. I can't wait to hear more about your trip!

Oh my--such a variance in what is understood by "jacket." It is far too big and bulky to wear either inside or under a heavier, winter coat. I have one of those--and when it is cold enough, I wear turtlenecks and sweaters underneath it.

I am feeling much better about it now that I've slept. In fact, I wanted to throw it on to run an early morning errand--but it wasn't quite cold enough--it is 12 degrees. Tomorrow, though it will only be plus 5. (C) so my window of opportunity for wearing it is opening.

I've been thinking about the colour--it is good. I mean the perfect red is not really an option unless I go to a heavier wool (and then I still don't have a Fall light weight jacket.) I am hoping to get out and get tose scarves today and once I do, I think I will be sorted--except for one thing--is pleather rain resistant? Gah.

Everyone's positive comments really helped. I think I am learning that, unless I absolutely love something, my initial reaction will be negative. It is an old reflexive habit, I think--I have had a lot of practice talking myself out of things for various reasons. It can be hard to separate the threads of "this jacket is not quite right" from "I don't deserve a decent nice looking jacket." as I can say the former--but mean the latter. Does that make sense?

I think this jacket is a very interesting and rich color and I can imagine how it would play well with the rest of your wardrobe. I also think it fits you really well in the shoulders, bust, and waist.

However, I am less crazy about the length for you. I tried and returned a Veda jacket recently (click through my posts) that had similar length, hitting at my low hip. It was a regular not a petite of course. (You aren't a petite, are you?) Anyway something about that length just strikes me as not modern. Harkens back to the 80s. Though I did like the length over a skirt or dress, for some odd reason.

I would also prefer it if the sleeves were tapered a bit -- looks a little loose around your wrists. That slight detail (which is an easy alteration) can make a big difference.

I'd be inclined to suggest taking it to a tailor to see if they can make some slight tweaks to the fit -- even an inch off the length (which I think you might be able to do with this jacket) plus tailoring of the sleeves from the elbow down could make a big difference!

Interesting idea, Shiny. My first thought is that if I take it to a tailor, now, it will spend it's entire wearable window at the tailors. My second, is, my cardigan--which I must wear under it to get more wears--is the same length. I think it might bother me to have it stick out an inch. But it is worth investigating--especially the sleeves. I have to resist the urge to roll the sleeves when I put it on.
