K/R: white handbag

I hope my YLF friends are have a good start to their weekend!

The reason for my post is a keep-return question. I bought this white bag last week (find 1, photo 1). It was a spontaneous purchase because the colour matches my new Ecco sneakers perfectly (find 2), and it was about 70% off. It’s also structured and goes with most of my clothes. I love the leather quality.

The thing I don’t like is:
- I can’t put my hand through the handles. The upside is that there’s a long cross-body strap included but does it seem like a weird thing to go around with a satchel in cross-body mode?
- it seems to “split wears” with a blue satchel handbag I have.

I wonder if a better buy would be a blush handbag (find 4), which would “go” with my new blush/peach Ecco sneaker-oxfords (find 4). (Yes, that’s right, I bought two new pairs of sneakers!)

Please help me make a decision!
I think I might have sales goggles on!

I saw that you bought this bag, and it looked lovely to me. I like the combination of the top handle and the longer strap. I have several bags with this and they work well for me. I looked at the bag after you had bought it and gave it serious thought (I would really like a stone coloured bag this season) but the silver rather than gold hardware put me off. If it had been gold, I would have bought and we would have been bag twins.

I like the blush bag, but the shape isn't quite as cool or cute as the white / stone version.

I vote keep, and accept it may take a bit of getting used to. The shape is lovely to forgive the handles issue.

I like the bag. But it seems like your instincts are telling you blush would be a better addition. I guess the question to ask yourself is what would make you happiest if you disregard the sale price.

For what it is worth, I have a satchel that I wear in cross body mode most of the time. I purchased it because it was exactly the correct color gray that I had been searching for. At first, I didn't use the cross body strap because I thought the satchel handles flopping around would be annoying. Turns out that the flopping doesn't bother me at all. I still carry it as a satchel sometimes, but usually as a cross body. I appreciate the options.

How does this bag lay across your body in cross body mode? Does the handle placement let it conform to your body? For me, cross body bags have to certain softness so that they mold to my body. If they are too stiff and/or wide they seem to flop around too much and become unwieldy. The red cross body I just purchased will be going back because the saffino leather doesn't have any give so the bag doesn't lay against my body as I want it to.

It is a beautiful bag! Let us know what you decide.

I was so excited when I saw your title: BAGs. So excited.

Then you posed such a hard question. White bag (ON SALE) that exactly matches your new shoes. OMG. Yes. Of course, yes.

So I am really not of much help.

I will say the white bag is absolutely beautiful!!!!!! The leather looks thick and rich. The shape itself is art. Cross body works great too. The splitting wears with the blue satchel bothers me though. That is the harder consideration.

If you bought the blush, would you be splitting wears???? Is the blush as close of match as the white? It doesn't seem to match on my computer screen.

I'll swing by and see what others have to say. Always an interesting subject.

Decision: I returned it. Head over heart decision. I just think my existing blue bag is just as good and I might as well wear the heck out of it.

Jane: I really LOVE the stone colour they offer. It think it goes well with the grey finish on the handle -- better than the white. I also love this bag.

But as Sterling reminds me, I am splitting wears. When I think about all the bag possibilities, my blue structured bag is just as good if not better choice for most outfits.

Greycat: Good point about softness for cross-body bags. I agree. But I am not a fan of flatbags (just because I've had them in the recent past and have moved on) and do like a little bit of heft.

I liked the bag a lot. On Zappos it comes in a sort of blush (rose dust).

I know what you mean about sale goggles. I have been ordering outerwear for my Alaska trip, and I am having a hard time ignoring that.

Supporting your decision to return. You convinced me it was a no when you couldn't get your hand through the handles. I thought it was very telling that you led with that.

Love the skirt! It's so unusual to find a non floral print that's so pretty!

You see - this is what happens when Queen Bag Lady is off the forum

The navy bag - as beautiful as it is - is no substitute for a white or blush bag.

The white and blush could be interchanged though. So ideally if you’re a minimal Bag Lady, you need to order both the white and blush bags to see which plays better in your wardrobe. And build a complemet around the one you like best so that your outfits look and feel pulled together. Hope that makes sense.

Always late to the party...my first reaction was KEEP! What a gorgeous white bag!!! Admittedly I'm a bit biased though because a white bag is kind of a HEWI for me. But, I would like to see you holding the bag and how it looks cross body. At the end of the day, only you know how you feel about a purchase when you get it home and how it plays in your wardrobe. On to the next fab bag...

I love the shape of the white one! I like that JAileen found it in blush — maybe that’s a better option for you?

When it comes to bags, I don’t mind splitting wears. I like my bags to last a long time, and I think they last much longer when you can switch them out fairly frequently.

@Angie: Oh no! Well, as @Colette says, on to the next fab bag.

@Angie: I _do_ think a blush bag would be better than a white bag. (I have been using Polyvore to crest outfits and the blush fits better.)

@Jaileen and @Janet: The bag Jaileen suggested is too muted and I would prefer a clearer pink. Still worth considering. They also have cute blush bags at ROOTS, but they are a little floppy...

I hope Boden comes out with a slightly smaller blush bag.

As always, I support your final decision. These decisions are not always easy, but you know yourself best. I thought Isabel's comment was particularly insightful. You did lead with that sentence and perhaps your brain was already doing the calculous.

I support your decision to return it. I know how annoying it feels when you can't get your hands through the handles.

However, I agree with Angie and others, that a white or blush bag is a great idea, in particular for wearing with your summer clothes and your new light pairs of sneakers. So I wish you good luck with finding a light bag that you love.

I think you made the right call. To me that looks a large bag to carry as a cross body and then carrying it by the handle sounds awkward.

I do think a light bag is a nice idea but this maybe was not the one!!

I agree about functionality. I tried to use one of my satchels this morning, but I immediately switched out to a tote. It would have been stupid to try to make the satchel do the work of a tote.
