K/R: Very Blue Jacket?

Hi ! I need your help please. In an attempt to break out of the black jacket rut, I bought the jacket in the pic below. I would not wear it until the Spring. It has a few things going for it.

-Cotton --good for LA climate
-Great fit
-Great value

What is troubling me is that it is JUST SO BLUE! I would describe the color as bright royal--a very flattering color on me--but still so bright. I can think of things to wear with it--I just need courage!

You know how bright red jackets can sometimes make you think of 80s real estate agents? I'm worried this color has an association I can't put my finger on.

I know it's a lot to ask opinions when I haven't shared WIWs yet--I am working on photo set up. Thank you!

Well, I just bought a cobalt jacket, which was pretty far out of my comfort zone!

So far I have paired it with a white shirt and black jeans, and blue jeans and a grey shirt.

I think this could work well, especially if paired with neutrals.

But, if you are not comfortable with it, will you wear it?

It's a very fun colour, LaCeleste, and if it looks good on you and you love the fit of the blazer, why not? I love this shade of blue with white bottoms, and also with light to medium denim washes. ETA: I personally don't have any negative associations with it:-)

Angie had a blog post a month or two ago about how a color can be perceived quite differently based on adjacent colors. This blue may seem less bright if you combine it with black, dark gray, or navy. White or clear orange may make it seem more vivid. Play around with it before you cut the tags. The color looks quite gorgeous and happy to me!

Agree with DOnna about the white, and yes, orange would be amazing! Just don't wear a name tag with it. Seriously, I do not get real estate agent at all, just a very fresh piece.

It's a great color! Be brave and experiment with it! I think blue is an easy color to match. It goes with most things, I find.

Hey! I'm a real estate agent. I like the jacket (but you may consider that the kiss of death). I can send you a name tag. Kidding...I don't wear a uniform or a name tag:-)

Think very 80's TV idea of a real estate agent---on shows like Dallas.

Century 21 and Long and Foster wore mustard jackets. I think ERA was red for awhile. The National Assn uses a royal blue jacket in their commercials...would assume they picked it because it wasn't associated with a particular brand. Wear your jacket proudly...and if you happen to sell a house because of it, more power to you!

I have a cobalt jacket that gets a huge amount of wear -- even in winter. Don't hesitate to pair with neutrals like dark grey or -- one of my favorites -- burgundy. Yep.

If blue itself is sooo gorgeous and if it flatters you, fits great, etc.,
what's holding you back?

Is it really the bright color or are you not sure how to pair it in an outfit?

The ensemble of other colors & patterns next to the blue will make it seem so much more blue or more mild and diffuse.

Moving out of your comfort zone of black, might mean rethinking how you build this ensemble. Black is often your background color, to which you add highlights in the other pieces. The blue might be your hightlight piece and the other pieces become the background or the blue might need an ensemble that works more as a coordinated team.
I thought Beth Ann's pics are helpful. Her patterned blouse diffuses the cobalt blue. A solid might make it stand out, especially if it is much darker or lighter than the blue.

Playing around with the other pieces of the outfit might help you find an ensemble that you're comfortable with.

Beautiful color. Only you can know it you are pushing your comfort zone or if this would be out of it. I think you have fantastic styling recommendations. Beth Ann's photo (and Donna F's comment) where she wore the cobalt with burgundy which had a similiar value really softened the look. I had not thought to wear this color with one of similiar saturation but I thought that was stellar. As Ceit, Thistle, Inge of wearing with neutrals - you could wear a column of color black, white, ink, gray to let the jacket shine also adding a scarf with the cobalt plus neutral or necklace etc would meld your choice of colors. would be very pretty and polished. I think it would look great with denim, black tank, scarf. I could see this becoming a total work horse but only if you are into it!!

Maybe now, maybe more at winter's end when more colors show up in the stores, just wear this jacket out on a "fashion research" trip (with any reasonable pieces you already have ) and try it on with all kinds of colors (meaning ones you may not have in your closet), including ones you might not think of as combos. Go somewhere that has a lot of tops & bottoms in colors--maybe just a youthful store with T's and colored jeans, since you would be color-experimenting, not buying. This might really help you see its true calling , be fun, and no-cost--then you could target your favorites.

LA Celeste, I say that if the fit is great, and the jacket is a great value, and you like the color, this is the perfect item to use to step out of your comfort zone. Especially because it will probably be so versatile, given that it's a blazer.

I have started stepping out of my comfort zone more and more, and it is becoming really freeing. And I have started getting further and further away from the comfort zone as time goes on...and I am having a great time, and feeling more and more secure in who I am. I am not minding so much dressing differently from other people, in ways that make me stand out. Maybe this will be the start of a great experience for you!

Olympic Games Official? Is that what you are thinking of? Seriously, what the others have said about tempering the color goes for me too. Find things of lower contrast to start. Greys, medium blues, black.
