K/R Trying volume on volume - YouLookFab Forum

Went to the thrift store yesterday to exchange the zippered plaid shirt. I spied this black and yellow butterfly, boxy top ($3.99) and thought immediately of MaryK. : )

It wasn't until I came across this sunny, fisherman yellow JCrew full skirt ($9.99), that I thought to pair the butterfly blouse with it. Back of skirt has cute grommets and ribbon closure.

Questions:
1) How are the proportions? The top hits my waist.

2) The skirt has a v-yoke in the front. Does it look funny since the shirt does not cover it?

3) Skirt length fine? It grazes the top of my knee caps.

4) Although I think the volume silhouette will be great for when it's hot, does the overall look seem too young? Any styling suggestions to take it out of juniors mode yet still making it bearable for hot weather?

I think this is a really fun, casual summer outfit. I don't think it's too junior the way you've styled it and the skirt length looks fine with your sandals. I'd say it's a winner!

I love it, other than the necklace, which seems kind of dowdy with the top and skirt. It is a cute necklace though--I think the necklace just drags your eye down here. I'd do something chunky and shorter, so that it mirrors the neckline of the top.

This is a really great volume on volume look! The fact that the skirt is short keeps it still body conscious enough to be flattering. Super cute!

Both the top and the skirt are just gorgeous and I think that the top is the perfect fit to be worn with another voluminous piece. It's not *too* full and so you're not drowning in it. You look great.

Great top! I love this outfit from the front, but not 100% sure about the side view. So just face the world head-on and you'll be great! LOL

Hi Aljean! I think the pieces are promising, but I'm not sure I like them together. I could see the top worn loose with a high-waisted pencil skirt and a bib necklace. With that conversational print, it looks very current. Can you tell how old it is? You could apply Angie's bright jeans formula to the yellow skirt and pair it with a grey and white striped T. A blue denim jacket would be really cute on top of it all.

You are such a pro at this, but I am finding that doing this season's trends with *last* season's clothes (aka thrifted items) very tricky. So much to learn!

Very cute, AJ! I think you can wear volume-on-volume well, without any body-conscious meltdowns! Lol. I like the cut and length of the skirt. In the sideways- view photo, it looks very poufy, but I'd imagine in real life, in motion, it looks fab. To take it out of juniors' mode? Just simple sophisticated accessories like a great watch and bag. Shoes are nice too!

I love the proportions! I agree about removing the necklace, maybe. I think it's just poofing out from the side a bit because your hands are in your pockets. My only teeny OCD thing is that the butterflies look golden to me while the skirt is more of a citron--but this is just my weirdness :).

Same qualms about side view, but love the items separately. You are svelte enough to carry this off and if you feel sassy you will look great.

I posted a couple of skirts like yours in the past week and I was trying to think of who they reminded me of. I came up with your name and Astrid's. I was so proud of myself for echoing two such fashionable ladies! Now, these aren't volume on volume, but the skirts are similar. I think I have to keep the tops sleeker -- I'm quite a bit bigger than you are and am afraid of looking, well, burly!

@Jonesy - Yes the butterflies are a golden yellow, but the skirt is not sour. It is clear and bright...like a yellow rain jacket.

@Beth Ann - I have a smile on my face from having partially inspired your skirt looks! Luv the print of the first skirt and pairing it with that green cardigan is FAB. The yoke of the second skirt is similar to the yoke of this yellow skirt. Luv the layered necklace and the eyelet button down with it. That outfit uses my formula of skirt, button down, belt and necklace. So yes, that does remind me of me. : )
