I've spent the last several months obsessing over this Burberry trench. I initially saw it online and then I ran across it in LV (but not in my size so I couldn't try it on). I already have a Burberry trench in a kind of stone colour. But it is not my best colour, and it also has a stain that no cleaner has managed to get out. The only person who would notice that is me, but it bugs me. I still wear it, but it has lost its lustre a bit.

So I wanted a darker one. I love this colour, not really springish, but it would be used both spring and fall. Then it arrived and it was too small. But now I'm not loving it as much as I thought I would. Perhaps I built it up too much in my mind, maybe I was irritated that it didn't fit. Or maybe it is not as fabulous and flattering as I had hoped. I still kind of love it and I know that I would wear it. I think the double leather wrist straps are great and the numerous buttons are fun. It hangs kind of weird when open, but I usually wear my trenches done up.

I am returning this one, but wonder if I should order a size up? Or if I should perhaps look for something else. Would appreciate all your honest feedback and advice. Envision me in a size larger.

If you don't love it now, you are never going to love it. They say you like an article best when you first purchase it. For such a large purchase, I would say wait until you find something you love and are super excited to wear.

I love it. I think you should check the size up. I am actually saving for a Burberry right now. I would love something like this.

I do love the color, which looks great on you. I would say try the size up, maybe your disappointment is in the fact that it's too small. But, do not keep it if the size up doesn't wow you either.

I actually like the way it looks on you. Perhaps you will feel differently when you get the proper size. Echoing Thistle, however, don't keep it unless you love it.

Before reading your last two paragraphs, I looked at the pictures. I love the way this looks in #1. The fit looks great to me. Double breasted coats are tricky when opened, but I also liked the way this looks in #2 and #3.

Then I read that you feel it doesn't fit well. And that you're having second thoughts.

If you don't love it, then don't keep it. But I think it looks fantastic on you, in this size.

I think you should wait to decide once you've tried it in your real size. Then you won't have to wonder "what if." If you don't, you may always wonder if your lack of enthusiasm was because of the off fit. If it still underwhelms you in the correct size, you can move on.

I wanted to add that I buy my trenches to fit me just like this one looks at the moment. I did not bring it up earlier because I know most people here would consider my coats a bit too snug. I don't like roomy coats. I feel very frumpy on them.

BJ, underneath I would likely wear a blouse, perhaps a light sweater. I would not wear it with a heavy sweater or a jacket underneath.

Zap, I generally prefer my coats snug as well (probably all my clothes in all honesty, ensue forum horror ). But this one was really pushing it, for a moment I was concerned that I wouldn't even be able to do it up. Denise, I was surprised to see in the photos that it didn't appear as tight as it actually is. I think one size up will still look very sleek and fitted.

My other Burberry trench is too big and I feel super frumpy in it. I bought it in the year after I had my last baby. I really need to take it to the tailor.

I agree with others that it's worth trying your regular size first. Love that olive shade! It looks fab done up, and if you mostly wear it that way I think you shouldn't worry about the open look; it'll be hard to get a double-breasted trench to hang open any nicer, though the larger size might drape a bit better.

I see no snugness, shoulders look good, sleeve length looks good as well.
Love the colour on you- such a sophisticated neutral - and looks gorgeous with the lavender top you are wearing.
For the investment you are making you deserve to be 100% happy - definitely try the size up.

I have a mental block about trenches. I love them on others but hate them on me and therefore cannot trust my judgment. Nonetheless, it wouldn't hurt to order the size up, but if it is not thrilling I think you should look for one that is.

I adore Burberry trenches, and they have so many varieties that if you are not completely delighted with this one, then wait. There WILL be another that will steal your heart. While I like the look of this one, I am not wowed by it, either. The fit looks fine, but it needs to be comfortable, too. I have just invested in too many pieces that I thought would be functional and get a lot of wear, but if the love isn't there, then things just don't get worn as much as I had planned. Wait until you find a happiness factor 10.

The trench looks stunning on you, but I believe that you feel it is a tad snug. I would try a size up for sure, but if it doesn't completely wow, than I would wait for a better one.

Tina, I think it actually looks great as is, but obviously if it feels too snug then go a size up. It needs to be comfortable AND you need to love it, otherwise you won't wear it. I really like the olive color on you.

I think I would size up and then decide as long as it is returnable. I love the colour and style for you. I think the colour can be used through the seasons.

Just the other day I was thinking about what my ideal trench coat would like like, and, I kid you not, I pictured this exact trench, only in a lighter colour. I didn't know it already existed in real life! So be aware that I'm incredibly biased when I say I think you should definitely try it in one size up. That way I can enjoy it vicariously through you

l thought it fit ok, but with outerwear its hard to tell from a picture. one thing i can say about burberrry, their sizing is inconsitant. i have a coat from a few years ago that's a size 4. at christmas time i found a trench on sale at nordstroms in a size 8, that fit as well. keep trying different sizes.

No, I don't love it, although I really like the colour. What I don't like is the shoulder fit, and I think that would get worse when you size up, and I don't like the way the leather straps crumple the sleeves. I feel a Burberry trench should be SHARP, and this is not that sharp.

Thank you everyone for your wise words and advice. I do really like it, and when I look at all the other Burberry trenches online, this one beats them hands down in my mind. It was everything I wanted in a trench. Perhaps I'm just unenthused as I know I won't be able to wear it for a while. And my mood has been affected by some other stressors we are dealing with (my Dad's health).

Una, I love the coat you posted. So much in fact, that I already have almost the same one, lol. The only difference is that my Burberry utility doesn't have the asymmetrical zip. But it is navy, close to the same length and has lots of zips. I wear it a ton in the spring and fall, definitely my go to jacket. I think you might need the asymmetrical jacket yourself as I can attest to it being a real workhorse piece!

If you loved it until the fit was off there is no harm in trying the larger size. I especially like the several rows of buttons. Let us know how it works out.
