K/R: the magenta London Fog Trench, plus bonus WIW

All pics taken by DH who's 10 inches taller than me... hence weird perspective...

The double-breasted magenta London Fog trench arrived this afternoon. This is the PS. What do you all think? I am on the fence.

Let's start with the color. I love it. SO much better than soul-sucking beige. It has just the right blue undertone, yet I don't think it's too sweet - or am I fooling myself? DH (my ultimate critic whom I trust) loved the color before I even put it on.

But not sure about the fit...

I think it fits a lot better than the single breasted PXS that arrived yesterday --

Not just because it's a PS rather than PXS; the magenta is shaped differently, seems better suited for an hourglass rather than racy rectangle. Also the belt is positioned better (the other was oddly too high, considering I'm high waisted and only 5'0). The length on the magenta is a bit shorter too; if I sized up in the beige it may fit but I suspect it'd need to be hemmed a lot. However the sleeves on the magenta seem a tad too long, or maybe they are just looser, not sure?

And is there too much room under the armpit? Would a couple of simple alterations/tweaks make this fit perfectly? If so, what?

I actually thought "no" until DH took these pictures and now I'm thinking maybe.... but you tell me.

In this pic I am wearing it with the liner in -- I have not yet tried it without the liner. Liner is key, I really want a trench with a liner. I am also wearing a fairly thick top underneath it. Have not tried it with a thinner top.

(Excuse the sweat pants underneath... and yeah, I am wearing sweat pants with booties... I wanted to see how the coat looked with heels)

Wow, that is not magenta, that's radiant orchid!
I think it looks great!
Them I'm trying to re- examine and it still looks good. I see the underarm room, but for outerwear that does not look like too much. When coats are fitted like tight blazers then you can't layer.

And you look amazing in those Nikki's by the way. I know you modelled them earlier but I missed that post -- glad to see them here.

Back to the coat. I really love it on you. The only issue for me would be the sleeve length. I would personally get that altered if it were me. But I'm a fusspot about sleeve length due to years of dangling sleeves. I have to grit my teeth to wear the new "extra long sleeve" on sweaters. And I actually quite LIKE the look (and feel) with knits in this bitter cold winter. But I digress.

Is that hood removable or is it on there no matter what? It's super useful, I know, but I tend to prefer to wear these coats without hoods if possible.

I love the colour & wondered about the possibility of removing the hood. For me the sleeves would need to be shortened - they would drive me crazy so I'm no help there. Love the WIW

Yes, the hood is removable! As is the liner. I didn't have time (or DH's patience) to take those off and take more pictures. I agree, I probably would not wear the hood all that often, but I like having the option -- great for travel.

Shortening the sleeves is easy enough, but are they too wide? The other trench's sleeves were much slimmer, actually too tight, but I do prefer having slimmer sleeves -- as long as they aren't too tight, of course.

What about the shoulders? I'm on the fence there. This seems a tad too wide in the shoulders, but there is no PXS to compare, and if the beige was any indication, it might be too narrow anyway. Then again, I could easily fit a blazer underneath this trench. Hmmm.

I do love the color just so much... I fear I am not able be objective about the fit.

Oooh, I love that color. It's just what you need to get through some dreary days! And I love that you can remove the hood and lining.

Regarding fit, as you said the sleeves are easy to hem. I can't really tell about sleeve width, but it seems like they could be tapered if they feel too floppy. I'm not sure about the shoulders, but if you wear blazers with any frequency, it seems like the extra shoulder room would be a good thing.

I have so many issues with understanding trench fit and leave that to the experts. The color is phenomenal and if whatever fit issues can be tweaked, then KEEP!

Shiny the colour is gorgeous! I am finding it hard to judge fit, but if you are satisfied and any fit issues can be sorted, then I say keep. Are you happy with the hood?

It's a radinat orchid Shiny! Color of the spring suits you soo well! I love the coat but I can see what you see, a tad too big in the shoulders, armpits and sleeve width and length, too-and I know you want perfection. So, can you remove the lining and the hood, and ask HUbby to take some new pitcties? Without the lining will have completely another drape, so it may work better but shoulders can still have some ease, esp if planning to put on blazers and jackets underneath And if doing some alterations, then will be completely another animal:-).

Love everything. The coat fits really well, save for the sleeves which look a bit long. Is that an easy fix?

Your outfit with the Nikkis is sharp. A+ plus all the way here girl!

You had me at "magenta!" And then again at "removable lining" and "removable hood!"
OK, coat gorgeousness goggles are off, let's look at the fit. It looks a tad roomy, but what the hey, now you can wear a blazer or heavy sweater under it. No deal breaker there. And it doesn't look too roomy in the body, only the sleeves. Sleeve length and width alterations? Easy peasy. No deal breaker there. The shoulders don't look that far off, if at all, so I would leave that alone as my guess is it would be a pricey alteration.
The sleeve width doesn't really look like it needs to be altered to me, but I'm only looking at pictures, a good tailor can tell you more about that.
I hope you decide to keep it!

I love the coat on you. I would say that if you take it to a tailor to have the sleeves shortened that it would be easy enough for them to taper the sleeves at the same time. It may save money to have both things done at the same time actually. Your wiw is wonderful. I love the proportions of the short jacket.

I think the colour looks great on you and I like the overall fit. I do agree about the sleeve length though - I think maybe if you had them shortened you wouldn't necessarily need to have them tapered as they'd hang straighter and not bunch up

I love it! The color is amazing. Other than the sleeve length, the rest of the fit looks great too. I like my trench slightly roomy. Otherwise, I feel like I'm wearing a straight jacket.

Love the color! It looks great on you! The fit looks great to me everywhere except the sleeves (and I actually prefer slightly overly long sleeves on my full-length-sleeved jackets and coats. I vote it's a definite keeper and just have the sleeves shortened a bit.

Also, do you mind if I ask whether the AG Nikki's run big or small? I've found their stilt crop and legging jeans styles run small, which works for me (and I size up if I want a slouchier fit). I'm thinking of getting a pair of the Nikki's and am trying to determine what size if I want them to fit much as yours do. Not too tight and not too loose. (they look fab on you, BTW).

I agree good to try without liner and unbuttoned, if you will wear it that way.
Not saying at all to " settle" , but I find it can be hard to get runway- perfect fit looks in all conditions such as with/ without. Also I began to noticed that sleeves were narrower on the model fits but often impractical for layering or driving-- that's the first thing I notice, when I get behind the wheel and buckle up and feel I can't move. I notice that the photo shoots will always show the model as slimly fitted as possible and worn over very not- bulky clothes.
So the benefit of trying on several brands and sizes is to find one that has a happy place. An alternative is a trench capsule targeting very specific seasons and outfits-- such as liner for winter.
It's interesting also with the fluid/ oversized knits- once you add up the dropped
armholes and possibly chunky knit, the topper situation changes notably. I had almost sidelined a wool coat that seemed a tad to big in shoulders and armholes but it turned out to be the main coat I have been wearing with my" bigger" sweaters.

Leopard, my Nikki's are a 26. I wear a 26 in the AG Farrah's, which I love because they are so stretchy and comfy. I have the Farrah's also in a 27, but they stretch out way too much, and not in a flattering/relaxed way. I also have AG slim boot cuts, not sure what model (don't see it on their site) in both 26 and 27, which fit last year but can't be zipped right now.

I am going to start another thread about jeans, because I received three pairs yesterday in the mail, as the hunt continues. I would love to hear what AG's you have and how you like them.

By the way - what do you think about how I have the jeans cuffed? I forgot to ask that. They shrunk a little bit in the wash, but are still quite long -- this is rolled three times. Is the cuff too wide? I was playing with cuff width. I am debating whether I want to hem at all, and if so, how much. Cuffed jeans are very popular here in Boston, at least around the college and artistic crowd.

I love the color of the trench which is lovely on you and it seems quite versatile (liner and hood options = fantastic!). I prefer a little wiggle room in my shoulders since I tend to gain mass there esp when swimming a lot so perhaps i have a sugar eye for the looser fit there. I think the wide cuff totally works in an intentional way but you could do a narrower sloppier one too for a different vibe.

First of all, I adore the color and especially on you.

Fit: I'm not an expert at all, but I think the shoulders and armpits look reasonable for outerwear, especially if you may sometimes want something a good bit bulkier underneath.

I think I like the cuff but the angle makes it tricky to judge

Speaking of which: much sympathy and understanding here! Leopardluxe suggested a trick that's worked for me - have him stand way across the room and zoom in!

Grr. I am grinding my teeth at myself because I waited to long and they are out of my size now...should have ordered it back in the fall when I first had my eye on it! Well...such is life.....

I used to have a sweater in this same color, it was my "happy" sweater -- I reached for it anytime I needed a boost. I am glad to see this color coming back. I noticed on j crew they have some tops in this color too... they are calling it "hyacinth."

Thanks, Shiny! That does help. I own the stilt crops in 24 and 26 as well as the leatherette coated legging jean in 24 (and 27, which I bought cheap at consignment but discovered that even though they run small and fit well when I first put them on, they stretch too much, too quickly. To the point where they're huge on me within an hour. So they are in a pile of clothes to sell on ebay.

The stilt crop 26's work pretty well for me as loose BFs as long as I wear a belt. They are a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen if I don't

So maybe I'll try a 25 in the Nikki's.
