K/R some odd coats - YouLookFab Forum

It is cooling off a bit and I am ready to start tackling my coat and jacket department. These were second hand but soon it will time to bring some to consignment and I would love some advice. I will describe them and say how I am leaning but am prepared to sell any of them in the end.

#1,2 Ann Demeulemeester corduroy black jacket. Sorry about the see through linen tee - I only put it on to better show the shape of the jacket.

#3 Really beautiful vintage Escada cashmere/wool blend coat. I know it overwhelms me and I will most probably try to sell this. What do you think?

#4 Y's Yohji Yamamato jacket. Ok, I will probably not sell this, but would welcome your frank opinion.

#5 Not for sale no matter what, but I couldn't resist this picture of DDs. They are completely self styled. I did thrift the red jacket though.

Okay, I'm useless here. I adore #1. I hope you'll keep and wear it this season.

The Escada is gorgeous, but yes, it does overwhelm...I was imagining it with sleeves down and it would be even more overwhelming then. But what if it were shorter? I suppose it is tough to do that with these designer pieces -- you hate to spoil the integrity of the piece. (I have left the Dries dress alone for that very reason -- it just seems like sacrilege to cut something like that up!)

I really like the last jacket for casual wear. How does it look undone (if you would wear it that way)?

I've never had an Escada coat, but I have had some beautiful items that I could no longer wear or simply just chose not to wear...and I suddenly realized that I didn't want my closet to be an art gallery - I wanted it to be more like a library, where fabulous works get taken out to see the light of day! I think the Escada, while amazing, does overwhelm you and maybe it's time to pass it on. Otherwise, it might just be a work of art you visit in your closet. The others I would keep -- especially the first, which looks amazing on you.

Suz I think you should do whatever you need to do to that dress to make it wearable for you, after all wearing it is more respectful than keeping it in the closet, right? Thank you for your support for the first jacket! I have actually worn it twice but I was not sure it actually looked good, I was sort of swayed by the silky lining

Thank you Ceit - it had never really occurred to me to keep #3 but since I had just brought it out to hang (it has been stored in a box) I couldn't resist trying it on. It really would be beautiful on someone taller than me but might be too boxy and retro to appeal to anyone. And thanks for the hair support, although I desperately need a cut!

I was really impressed when DD picked out those overalls and striped shirt at H&M with absolutely no prompting from me (I was busy with DS in another area of the store).

Finally, I am going to sign off now to get dinner ready, but will be back in the middle of most of your nights to see if anyone else chimed in!

I love all of these. I see what you mean about 3, but I still like it. How do you feel in it?

I'd be tempted to take #3 off your hands if you decide to get rid of it. Not sure how close we are in size.

I love the Escada coat. So dramatic and the lines are stunning. How do you feel about shortening it a little?

I vote pass on the corduroy jacket because you've moved on.

Something about #4 is not quite right. I think it's the length. Too long when zipped up. It would be killer if it were short and boxy, instead of long and boxy - with boxy sleeves to boot. Maybe it needs to be worn open with the sleeves scrunched (or folded because they aren't narrow and probably won't scrunch) to create that oh so trendy "oversized coat look with a hint of structure" look. I hope that makes sense. xo

Before I really sign off I just want to say thank you Angie - I think you touched on all of my lingering concerns. I will play around with #4, that is the one I am most partial to right now, but I am trying to keep an open mind. I did wonder if it was worth shortening #3. I will mull all your helpful comments over, thanks!

I like the Escada coat. I don't think it looks that overwhelming on you. You could have the sleeves taken in and shortened a bit and maybe shorten the coat length too. You already own it so really you have nothing to lose. Or just roll the sleeves a bit and wear it. To me it looks just like the Man Coat blog story from a few days ago.
I would pass on the other two.

I think if you shorten it and deal with the sleeves, the Escada would be amazing for you. And think how great to have a long coat...

Shevia, first off, your daughters are precious, pretty and have such sparkling smiles. What fun it must be to shop with them. How about DS? Does he enjoy shopping, too?

I'm another one cheering on the Escada and I will leave it to Angie and others to determine alterations. I also like #1-2, because it's cute and fits your style. You have great taste in jackets and if I had to let one go it would be #4. Please post the Escada once you decide.
