K/R: scaly silver moto booties

I went to return some sandals to the Rack yesterday and found these very cool scaly silver-metallic moto booties. They're Donald J. Pliner, which is outside my normal budget (these are still on the pricey side given my NAS success, but affordable), and amazingly comfortable and well-made. But are they different/better enough compared to my black moto booties from last season?

The shaft on the DP's is slightly shorter and the circumference slightly wider, so there's sometimes a flowerpot effect depending on how my foot is positioned. The black moto booties were an absolute HEWI in being narrow enough in the ankle for me, though; I have Chelsea booties that I wear a lot which fit similarly in width to the DP's.

And style-wise, are they different enough or will they be splitting wears?

Hmm. I read the descriptions and figured I'd vote to return. However, they're pretty darn cute. The gap doesn't bother me, but may bother others.

How often did you wear the boots last year? I would think this might split wears, so I would keep just if they are super comfy. I don't mind ending up with an extra pair of shoes or two if they win in the comfort category.

I think they're cute, but they aren't very different than the pair you already have.

Love them! I think they would be good when you want texture but less of a busy look than the motos -- if that ever happens to you.

I vote keep. I like the texture and the color and don't find the gap a problem. It is true they are not dramatically different from your current boots but if your others have been in use for a while, they may not be around that much longer. So these may serve both as an alternative now and a replacement later.

I liked the new silver pair a lot! The DP are sleeker and a bit lighter visually (both color and weight), but I don't know that they're super different from the motos in terms of wardrobe functionality. Do you wear a lot of dark footwear, and have enough weather for it, in fall/winter?

delurked, I didn't wear the black motos a ton last year because I was still breaking them in and acquired them mid-season. They're not quite as comfy as these silver booties, but comfortable enough with an added insole for anything except all-day city traipsing; the DP's are already really soft and I think I would even wear them for sightseeing.

Elle, I didn't think about the new booties being a future replacement. I can resole my old booties to get more life out of them, but the construction quality (Ivanka Trump brand) is definitely a level below Donald J. Pliner.

Aida, good points to think about. I definitely had a few times last year when I passed on wearing the black moto booties because they're very visually heavy, so the lighter silver color may be helpful in those outfits. I live in a mild climate and wear booties for 3 seasons. I put the black ones away for spring because I was tired of black but kept wearing my green Chelsea booties into May. And I don't have any problems with dark footwear, since it bookends my black hair.

If that's the case and you don't already have a ton of dark booties, I think these are different enough from the black. They look 3-season wearable to me with the lighter-than-black color, especially for spring (when you're itching to lighten up) and early fall (when you don't want to get into black just yet); and of course in winter when you want a little visual punch from the metallic.

OK, I think I have enough justification to keep them, as I've been wanting to Wasn't sure if I was being blinded by the shininess, comfort level and brand/quality. Although come to think of it, those aren't terrible reasons either, hah.

The more I read in this thread, the more I agreed with keeping them. When you said you could wear them sightseeing, whereas you need inserts to make your current ones work, I thought, gee, wouldn't it be nice to have a cool pair of booties that you love--that are also all-day, walking around comfortable? I would say it's money well spent.

The color and texture make them more statement-y than your motos. And you said more comfortable, too? Definitely keep, but don't consign the motos yet.

I think degree of difference depends on how many items the owner has - how minimal or maximal someone is in their shopping and wardrobe habits (no value judgment intended). If for example you only generally have one pair of booties (that's me!), two black/near-black pairs will seem more similar than say, black motos vs. beige open toe suede. So I see how someone could feel these are similar. That said, I absolutely love the new ones and actually find them more subtle and less statementy than the motos with their buckles and heavy visual weight. I'd totally keep them, wear both pairs, and enjoy the fact that neither pair will wear out as fast this way.

I think black booties are a style staple and can be used for several months of the year. I wouldn't worry about having two pairs.

I shouldn't insert politics into the forum but if it were me, I would probably be trying to replace the first pair anyway Though I also have the HEWI of the narrow ankle bootie...
