K/R: Potential casual MOTG dress from friend

My BFF went thrifting tonight while I went and had my hair trimmed. She popped by after quite excited by a gift for me. She knows I've been looking for a casual dress for weekend running around for the summer - nothing I would necessarily wear to work. She found this cotton chambray, sleeveless shirt dress (brand new still with tags and extra button still wrapped) in my size and thought it might do the trick.

Now please excuse the wrinkly mess that it is in these pictures - I literally took it out of the bag and popped it on for the pics. It is a lovely lightweight cotton, good secure buttons with no bust gaping issues and has pockets, which I love. it came with a darker blue self tie belt but it took it out and popped on one of my men's vintage belts instead. I really like the dress IRL but not sure if the pictures show it off well. It may need to be shortened as I think it would be too long with flats. This is exactly the casual vibe I'm wanting.

So what are your thoughts? Could this be my casual summer MOTG dress? Is the fit ok? It hasn't been washed so it may shrink a bit. If you think it's a keep, should I shorten it?

I like it but would get a brighter colored belt or something to add some zing. I have a woven yellow leather belt, for example, that would be dreamy with this. Or maybe throw a brightly colored cardi over your shoulders. Just needs a pop in my mind!

I like it! It's a dress version of a denim shirt.

Do you have room in your closet to add this as well as a black/navy dress? Or would this replace that?

Rae - there's ALWAYS room for a black/navy dress! I think this would be just another option. Is that your way of saying keep if you're going to also get a black/navy one but not keep if this is the only one?

IndyGal - I agree that a more colourful belt would look good.

I meant that I thought you'd still want a black/navy version even if you had this - seems like that is the case! If you're not worried about collecting *too many* dresses, I see no problemo.

I have dresses for work, but I want a few for weekend casual. I will have the green one from ON that I just bought, the magenta J Crew one I thrifted and this one. If I add a navy/black one, is that too many???

do you think I should shorten it?

BTW - it was only $13.

You friend definitely knows you well! What a fab fit and colour! Shannon, you *must* keep this. And I personally don't see a need to shorten, but then I'm Team Midi and Team Mostly Flats...

I have to say I like its soft blue, sunbleached vibe as-is a lot, with no additional colour needed. In fact, I'd probably want to see soft tans and whites with it more than colours --- but that's just *my* style, not necessarily what I think you should do!

Shannon, it looks cool and summery but still with a bit of structure and shape.
I would keep, wash and shorten if it doesn't shrink a little length wise. LOVE!

I find the longer hemlines looking more modern these days. I don't think I would shorten it. I also like Manidipa's ideas of tan and white with this.

Shannon, you will love this dress for casual summer wear! I once had a Gap denim dress very much like this one and actually wore it out! I liked to wear a small colorful cotton scarf or bandana rolled and tied in the back sort of like a necklace. It added color. A medium pink or rose looks great with chambray...maybe a belt?
I wouldn't shorten it. It's a great length for you as it is. I'm excited for you!!

How lovely of your friend and she obviously knows you well. I think this looks great! I also appreciate that this light color is probably not translating as well as it would IRL. I also like the length and think flats will be fine with the current skirt length. I think you have a lot of options re accessories. I could imagine a black and white animal print belt, a brightly colored belt. A short necklace to sit in the neckline, a cropped colorful cardi over it... The options are endless. Your friend did good!

What a great dress! The fit is great, and I think you should keep it this length--you can always shorten it later if you still feel it's too long after multiple wearings. (Love how happy you look in all of your pictures, by the way! Genuine smiles are always wonderful to see :D)

It's a super find, Shannon and so nice of your friend to pick it up! I think it will work really well. I don't think 3 weekend dresses is too much for hot summer, myself. I wear dresses and skirts for MOTG and work at home and find them the best on our super-hot days.

Shannon, I like it, too-I say keep! It is chambray(always on trend)doesn't gap on the bust(!), can be belted and have pockets! What else a girl can dream more about for casuals?:-) My only one (small) concern is what I see in the back view, is it the back torso a bit longish? It seems like so to me, as there is some fabric hiding your belt there, -or just a flaw in the pictie/posture---(a side pictie would clarify all)--but even if so, I think can be shortenned easy (just on the back waist seam)

I'll wash the dress and see if it shrinks at all. I think it's a keep and will play around with my different belts and handbags.

I like it! I think the length is good IF it's hitting right below the knee because I personally find denim/chambray dresses tricky (EDIT: Tricky at longer lengths, I meant). Worn with a heel like this looks good.
